Safari - Journey or travel (Everything your whole trip)
Game drive - Is the act of getting on a vehicle and looking for animals.
To begin I would like to mention that this is an objective review of what I experienced at Mala Mala, I am by no means trying to bring down the name or down play the 2 day Safari experience.
But having said that one must be able to express their perspective in society otherwise we will create more problems down the line by evading the truth as things will be one sided. This Game Park is one of the oldest and therefore is seen as one of the most prestigious in Africa and one would expect a high level of standard when visiting an establishment that charges 1000$ a night person, due to corvid they now charge 400$ a night pp.
I am an experienced travel across Southern Africa and the World as I have travelled to 22 different countries and spent 10000+ in game reserves all over Southern Africa, in this time I payed stayed in a tent or slept under the stars on the ground or in a luxury 5 star suite such as this, I have been to places where animal sightings and scenic views are just as beautiful or even more beautiful in their own way so to me the Game Drive being really good is not enough.
A Safari is a holistic experience, meaning the food, the people, the lodge, the service, the atmosphere, the game drive and animals. Being a qualified guide as well as an experienced cook and photographer and videographer it is in my professional opinion that this establishment has become complacent and are resting on their loreals.
I am truly concerned as a young entrepreneur that these ways of doing business are selfish and are harming not only the South African economy but also keep small business small because they are keeping everything to themselves. By manipulating words such as Safari and charging international clients exuberant sums of money they get rich and the communities around do not benefit from this.
The normal price is unaffordable for 99.9% of the population nd the SA discount is 80 unaffordable meaning that South Africans can even enjoy their on country unless they pay the premium Mala Mala deems fit. I went to scout this lodge out for future clients and I must say not only did the staff seem uninterested in facilitating the experience as a paying agent but they seemed to show an animosity toward me as I am a young and a local business owner.
There was an obvious sense of nonchalance and arrogance that was heart breaking as I expecting better. I also felt not vibe and no character in the entablement as if it was a job to everyone and not a passion being lived out. To me if an entablement is not bringing there best even if there were "the best" then its time to state the fact and accept that "The Mala Mala" of the past is no longer what is left is its empty shell making money.
I want to work with people who are passionate about their purpose in life because I do what I do because I love it and if I could do it everyday for the rest of my life for free I would but the world is not that way so I use my business to educate and education is not free but I can do my best to be better and this attitude was absolutely not apparent at Mala Mala.

  • Well, I am in the United States and have figured out that MalaMala equals jungle chic. Are you promoting a true safari experience of centuries ago? The type, that with current technology, a good African guide, a shotgun, tents, camping gear and the all important ELECTRIFIED FENCE, which some of the animals can jump, is needed? It is pretty obvious that MalaMala is a sight-seeing excursion geared towards foreigners, like me. It was nice videography. Good luck with your business venture.

    • A "true safari" still exists, there are plenty of hunting concessions in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia etc, where you go to hunt animals. In those places, the animals are more skittish and afraid of humans, and are hard to find. I much prefer the "photo safari" experience like Kruger and Mala Mala... animals are more relaxed and it doesn't take away from the experience if you don't kill the animal, in my opinion...
