Need some Shop Greatness? shopnationstore.com
Thanks for watching! Let's kick 2023 in the teeth.
Yes, the cat is out of the bag. I am signing a lease on a 3,000 sq ft commercial space to expand product development, manufacturing, and fulfilment to help more and more people inch closer to "shop greatness." Huge step for us, and frankly pretty terrifying, but I think it's necessary to allow for growth.
Much more to come with this space! Next step is to get the print farm set up! Make sure you're subscribed so you can see how the final product turns out.
Also, I need to finish the shed.

  • Congrats on the building! That’s a heck of a find! I honestly think you should keep everything under one channel. Technically this is going to be a shop.

  • Nice step for your family to grow. Congrats! I think Shop Nation is a vast enough channel to have a 'series' dedicated to creating a shop. I am sure there are people that would love to start their own as well, so you may be able to share costs and how you did it to help many people. The rest of us will just enjoy learning and sharing a dream through you. Looking forward to it! BTW. this channel could be a multi-million sub business if you grow it.

  • As someone who’s a woodworker but also has lasers, CNCs and several 3D printers, I’d have no problems watching everything on a single channel. Plus you have the added benefit of already having a following on this channel and wouldn’t have to constantly drive traffic to the new one. I’d also add that my full time job is in the movie industry. And given the resources, I’d turn a part of that space into a “garage shop” set. Make it look like your home garage and have good lighting and permanent set up so you can pop in and shoot at any point. I think people would rather see a welcoming home shop atmosphere over a huge industrial shop setting that’s generally out of reach for most. It will make your channel more approachable and inviting. Congrats on the space and can’t wait to see what you do with it. This is a dream of mine as well and can completely understand the need to keep home and work separate.

  • I'd keep the channel as one for now. The work is related, and you can always have different playlists in your video section for your audience to binge on specific topics. Growing a new channel and maintaining two, at this point, seems like a lot of work.

  • Trying to grow a second channel through all this work will be tough. Setting up your new shop and getting it going fits well with Shop Nation. But at some point you will need a second channel to differentiate between where you are going with each. Start the second channel now and put the new space videos on both channels, if KZhead allows. Then separate the content once the new location is where you want it in the short term. Nearly 40 years ago I started a business and wish I had documented the process, I am excited for you. P.S. I am in Northern Kentucky and my business took me to Beavercreek several times a year, it is a beautiful area with great great people.

  • Congrats, Travis! Can hardly even tell it was a slip-n-slide in there 😂 I'm super jelly as my commercial shop search has just been a drawn out seemingly never ending saga. So I can't wait to see how you build this space out and I'll live vicariously through you. Also, I would definitely go with a second channel. Segmenting your audience dilutes the channel and makes things more difficult down the road. Enjoy the new space!

    • Yeah I totally agree about making a second channel. Shop nation is about shop stuff (and shed greatness) but the next channel can be solely focused on the new endeavor and the business bits of it like Travis said. Either way, I’m watching!

      @thomasmcmahan2014@thomasmcmahan2014 Жыл бұрын
    • I don't agree. Shop Nation is about Travis living the American dream, and building a business empire is part of that dream. Shop Nation subs will lap this up. And who wants to start a new channel from scratch - that sucks. One channel will suffer and end up the runt of the litter. But I think building out the development area like a garage shop would be a good idea so you can use it to feed the original idea for the channel. Yeh, I'm green with envy for that space too.

      @DASBookbinding@DASBookbinding Жыл бұрын
    • I agree with Brad. I'm a product development engineer that likes to do shop stuff in his free time. Please don't take me back to work while trying to watch shop videos. 😆

    • As a product marketing guy in a fairly basic industry, I agree that you should segment. It would help you understand what hits better in each distinct categories. You have shop people and you have 3D print and tech people. Imagine you make two channels. One channel can be you solving a common problem in a shop (shop nation) using merch you sell. Posted on new channel, how did you make the merch, trials and errors specific to 3D printing and business org. One project would feed two channels and two distinct categories of viewers.

  • Hey Travis - thanks for being so transparent with your goals and dreams, that takes some vulnerability and some guts! I am excited for you and look forward to every aspect of watching you grow the business. I think it definitely makes sense to have a separate channel. While some of your current subscribers may be interested in the business view, I would guess that there are many who are most interested in the shop aspect alone. Two channels will allow you to more effectively draw in a new audience focused on everything you will be able to share with this new pursuit, while still keeping those who like the shop aspect happy as well. It’s really easy for us viewers to subscribe to multiple channels so I don’t really see a downside at all. Good luck and I really forward to following this exciting new opportunity!

  • Cabinets: where do you store tools, consumables? Focus: are you creating plastic items for shop use? Like dust collection? Will you branch out to 3D print other kinds of products? What about items that aren’t plastic, like flat sheet metal items, or bent up items? Kits of pieces for the customer to weld up on their own? All the questions depend on where you’re going. Very nice space, great to get it out of the house! I think you need to maintain a focus on the home shop, but that’s just my opinion. Good luck, keep the videos coming!

    @bdugle1@bdugle1 Жыл бұрын
  • Congratulations on the space and the possibilities that awaits! I definitely think Shop Nation is already flexible enough to document the process as it grows and getting the space to feel like home. It’s basically still getting a shop together lol, but any future projects dealing with 3d printing and/or other similar projects could do great on another channel! Some people are dedicated to a specific subject and don’t like change 🤷🏾‍♂️ don’t get it but it’s life. Continue the great work and can’t wait to see how far you come 6 months, a year, and even 5 years from now!

  • This is exciting! I think the buildout and upgrades of the new space would fit within Shop Nation, but I think down the road when you’re doing more R&D and production stuff, that might fit better on a new channel of some sort (which I’d also end up following)

  • I can see the need for 2 channels. For someone like myself, a space like this is a goal and seems to be more centered on the 3d/laser printing aspect. Which is great, don’t get me wrong here. I’d love to be able to add those things plus a cnc one day. But, I’m not there yet. You wouldn’t believe how you’ve influenced my shop flow and even the shed build has helped me with a diy project at home. I feel like you probably have a lot more knowledge to offer in that aspect and I think separating those two worlds would help 2 different types of audiences. Congrats on the new place and I pray for your continued success bro.

  • Wow, This is super exciting! I could see a second channel... "Shop Nation XL" or something like that. Commercial shop greatness can overlap somewhat with home shop greatness, but in the end they are different beasts. I certainly don't have 220 OR 3-phase in my garage, and probably never will in this house. You asked about built-in cabinets in one spot of the main area, I think you should do all your cabinets with casters so that as you grow and get different machinery you can stay flexible with your layout. I hope you have massive success in this new adventure!

  • Awesome Travis. Hearty congratulations. As my suggestion, This new premises is just an extension of you growing and having the ability for growth, as big or small as you want, Your print farm plan for this building is also an extension of your current one at home. The main reason you have taken the building on is space is scarce at home. So basically what I am trying to say "badly" is you absolutely have to continue as SHOP NATION. Aren't the things that you print, which you sell, born initially from your R&D under the Shop Nation flag. ? Having a second channel would be to much for you with what you already have going on, What ever you do my friend, I wish you all the very best in your ventures and I really hope it becomes a huge success for you and your wife. Enjoy. Love and Respect from North London UK.

They leave nothing of great value after they are gone. Those who choose to reject a comfort zone are the ones who grow beyond themselves and change this world for the better! It is a growth mindset.

  • So happy you found this building! Congratulations!!! I would put just your orange and black Shop Nation emblem on the walk-through door on the outside. I would build your own cabinets or if you can find some already done that meets your requirements & budget, go that way. The trade off is you make your own to fit or store bought you adapt. I’m sure you’re already on to my next comment, but I’d hang some sort of privacy screen or blinds in the new printer room. I assume that window does not open? The rest of the building will come into play once you move everything out of your house that you intend on to the new building. I think that fairly large conference room in the office area would be great for brainstorming with clients and your associates that you’re working with. The office for your wife would be super. She can triage the load of emails that you get. She may even find mine, 😂 I think you want somewhere for the kids as well. A place to play & nap. Is there a kitchen space? As far as a separate identity for the 3-D printing versus your original “Shop Nation”, would KZhead see that and your 3D printing biz as two separate channels, and expect you to produce twice as many videos? I have to admit, I don’t know how that works. Or if everything being under you and your wife’s credentials, would be considered, one overall channel with two different focuses. I am not sure about that at all. That said, I would tend to have two separate identities for what you’re doing. See you in the next installment!

  • 8 foot ceilings will be a big pain in the butt when dealing with plywood and other lumber hopefully you can find areas that are at least 10 feet.

  • Keep shop nation! I would get a pallet jack and use the room with the outdoor vent for wood cutting. Love your work and it inspires me to get off my butt to do something similar. Thanks!

  • I think you should keep it on the same channel. It is a shop after all, just a little bit bigger than most of us have. I’m excited for you (and jealous too haha). Whether it’s a new channel or the same channel, we’re all here for YOU! #BiggerShopNation

  • In my opinion, I would keep everything under Shop Nation. We know what you are...we know what you do...and any newcomers can figure it out! Lol. This is all still Shop Nation, it's just a different type of shop! We're all here for the content...no matter what it is!

  • I would do everything on the Shop Nation channel, at least for now. You can always create another channel down the road. Congrats on the new space.

  • If you haven't already, lay a sealer on that floor. That'll make a huge visual improvement and very easy to keep clean.

  • Congratulations on the new place. My opinion would be do the build out on this channel and once up and running make another channel for the new place.

  • Congrats on the new space. I like the idea of keeping the two efforts on separate channels.
