Why I Bought The Roland Fantom 08

People don't seem to highlight one the most important factors of this keyboard. It's an audio interface!!!
For $2K, I've got my Schecter C-1 Platinum, Moog Grandmother, and I could even connect a mic in at line level...all plugged into the Fantom!!! That kind of connectivity is the reason why I wanted this board!
I've been able to eliminate my PreSonus ioStation24c and the MPD226, which never accommodated all my instruments anyway.
If you want to focus on making music, this is the board. Best tool for songwriters ever.

Its missing one of my favorite add ons and that is user arpeggios, but I can do that easily in ableton and maybe Roland soon send an update. I agree with everything you said it is an amazing machine for the price and also there is a huge selection of sounds and add ons from Roland cloud for a very reasonable monthly subscription.

  • Just a quick note: I would not necessarily ditch the MPC altogether. The pads on this keyboard are trigger-only and do not support velocity or after-touch, so if someone feels that's necessary and just using keys on a keyboard to enter drumming does not work for you then use the MPC for that purpose, if you happen to have one. Outside of that, it's all good. Also, someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but it I believe it also lacks audio time stretching which was a nice feature to have on the older Fantoms. Of course, you can always use your favorite DAW for that functionality nowadays, but to have it at-the-ready on the keyboard and automatically adjust your samples based on the tempo of your song was a nice feature too.

    • @@chrissanchez1438 Most people don't have the skills to operate workstations. They watch reviews and think it is easy, but to get the full use of a workstation keyboard you must be a musician, have some music theory knowledge, have the trained ears of a recording engineer, must be a recording engineer, know how to mix, EQ, compress, limit, master and chain and design effects, be a sound designer, and know how to multi-track and be comfortable with metronomes.....to name just a few skills...:) That is the main reason this keyboard would be returned. I repair computers for clients, and I get the same from them asking me why are these computers so complicated to use. I tell them because they are complicated computers, and you need skills to operate them to their full potential. The Fantom O's are good keyboards.

  • I have tons of other gear too, but I recently purchased the Fantom 06 and I couldn't agree with you more. I bought it to use with a smaller laptop based setup and the main selling point for me (in addition to all of the sounds available for it) was the 16 stereo channel USB audio interface. That beats out ALL competitors in it's price range, including the MODX, which is what I was looking at just before this keyboard was released. It came at the absolute PERFECT time!!!!

    • Oh, is the USB audio interface really transfering on all 16 channels? Very interesting! I have the FA:07 which I really like, but when these new Fantom-0 series was announced I realised it addresses all the things I miss from the FA, i.e. more hands on controls, touchscreen for better accessibility and user experience with the sequencer. And it is in a nicer price range than the Fantoms. Soundwise it is probably more or less like what I have right now, but I will go and check out the 07 soon.

      @patsonmusic@patsonmusic2 жыл бұрын
    • @@patsonmusic Yes, the USB streams all 16 STEREO channels as audio for a total of 32 channels of audio streaming straight to your DAW!!! How cool is that?!!! Yeah, this new Fantom is a beast. The sequencer in there is nice too and very easy to use. I find myself on it making beats on sleepless nights until sunrise (when I don't have to go to work the next day of course). In fact, I was just on it last night all the way til noon when it was raining and the power went out. That was my cue to go take a nap and get some rest. Fortunately, I saved the beat I was working on and was only listening to what I just made before the power failure. Hehe. Hmmmm. Maybe I should consider a second UPS for this keyboard in this smaller setup at some point in the future. So in a nutshell, you can literally compose an entire instrumental song (or an entire instrumental album for that matter) completely within the Fantom then track out all of the individual parts of the composition straight to a DAW via USB. This is a REMARKABLE feature that should never be taken for granted!!!!! Talk about a huge time and cost saver. No need for a big and expensive multichannel audio interface.

Learning to use Ableton at the moment. I see that switching to a Fantom-07 would be hugely improve my situation for recording purposes. For live use only slightly, but still be better. • This has much of what I loved about the Korg Kronos but with a more friendly user interface and more memory. Althought the "O" series lacks aftertouch, there are many compensating factors as you point out. Plus you get the rich Roland sounds. Although I have Kronos and Montage, I am giving serious consideration to the Fantom. It could easily replace the Kronos and it runs rings around the Montage interface especially for recording. Montage Superknob and Kronos KARMA are value added but the ability to quickly capture ideas and develop them into compositions seems more full realized in the Fantom. I would probably go for the big brother to get the bigger screen for my old eyes and the aftertouch keys. Thanks for reviewing and recommending.

  • I have the 06 and it's the first time I was able to quickly put together a full song. I can tell roland tried to make it as intuitive and non-menu divey as possible. It's a piece cake to compose since you get 16 tracks (zones). The right side has tone categories clustered by type for easy tone selection, the left side has track faders and knobs for on the fly mixing and panning tracks. The center touch screen allows for easy recording and arrangement. 1. Pick bass, drum, pads, lead voices. 2. Noodle out verse, chorus, bridge clips for each voice. 3. Group the clips 4. Chain the clips into a full song 5. Boom, done. Do you need a daw for mixing, mastering and layering vocals ect? yes Is it limited for people who mainly sample? Yes, roland doesn't want to cannibalize their sp-404 mkii sales. Is it limited for people who mainly want to tweak knobs for synths sound sculpting? Yes, roland doesn't want to cannibalize their hardware synth sales. (However, if you are fine with menu diving there is a fair amount of sound sculpting capablities) Overall though it's a great tool for live performing and song idea sketching.

  • Hi Mack, I went to the store today and tried the Fantom 07 and the FA30x. I didn't like the action (synth) on the 07 but loved the PHA-4 action on the FA30x. So I went home and found out that the Fantom 08 (your one) has the same PHA-7 action and ivory touch as the FA30x. Were I to buy a more expensive Fantom8 well I'd be getting too much piano action (but I haven't tried it). Anyway, good purchase for you. Have you connected it to Ableton yet for anything? Have you reached it polyphony ceiling at all yet?

    @oscarsheen3045@oscarsheen30452 жыл бұрын
    • I can't speak to the action, idk Roland boards very well admittedly, but...interesting you mentioned polyphony limiter, and yes I did! I think what I was doing at the time was likely loading the zones up with SN tones and around 12 or 13 zones I did notice some "drop outs" we'll call them. This could become an issue if you're using lots of zones for a custom performance patch bc you'd suddenly get some of your sounds chopped off mid loop. I'm gonna work closely with daw to make sure this doesn't happen live but you could also just not try to be Hans Zimmer on one take and rely on fantom to play entire symphony lol.

However, I don't even use it for the features it has (yet), because I actually bought it to practice piano and read sheet music on. I do plan to use the synth engine, but to me the most important part to me is feeling comfortable with piano keys and learning to read music. I have a Juno DS with synth action keys that I dud use to write with for a bit, but my desk kinda sucks for keyboards right now. so instead of using them as midi controllers I use them for the instruments they are. I wrote a few arrangements on my Juno DS and it's the reason I hate DAWs now. Too bad I don't like the sequencer on the fantom, at least not yet. I've been sequencing it on my MPC so far

    • The full size Fantom has Roland's PHA-50 keyboard which is rather heavy and very authentic. The 0 has the PHA4 jabbed which is a little lighter and more mechanical feeling, but still excellent and better than the action on the MODX8. However, the internal piano sounds on the 0 are a little disappointing. They're usable, but not as good as the MODX. So if you're a serious pianist, you might want to use a VST like Pianoteq or Keyscape with it, instead 🐔 the internal piano sounds.

  • The O's may be the most thought-out menu synth Roland has ever made. I am DAWless, 100% hardware, this keyboard can also replace a computer in building clips, like in Ableton. Kind of the reverse of why you bought it :). I have been playing keyboards since 1967, and am considering buying this synth, but not for the piano, I have huge doubts the newer improved SuperNatural piano is worth buying. I am a professional solo acoustic pianist, there may be only one or two digital pianos worth buying out of the 1000s available. All Dpianos have the same problems, and some have many more. But you are a DAW user, you can use the O8 to play your piano into the computer then replace the 08 sound with software. And if you are playing fast, the SN 08 piano is probably fine to use as is. The sub output is a HUGE feature for those of us who have expensive hardware effects we want to use. The operating system seems almost flawless. How do you judge the internal effects?

    • I'm only really using the delays for fx right now, but I have since making this video completely abandoned the computer in favor of a DAWless workflow. I think the fx sound pretty good, nothing like my Outboard, but it seems okay. I'm actually gonna use the sub outputs into an iRig in the future so my live stream can really hear the power of the Fantom. I'm gonna tell you rn though, if you're really playing piano 🎹, you're gonna hate this keybed. The features are so great that I just deal with the action, but I'm making truly great original music with this thing every time I sit down. Hard to beat that.

AND the best sounding built in speakers I have ever heard, actually usable. But I will still use headphones for the full sound this piano can produce. We can get a 3-pedal unit for the DGX too and have 4 total pedal inputs. Yamaha stepped up this extremely inexpensive DGX piano beyond their P515 at twice the cost. • Hey I really like your video. I was thinking the same thing about it. I bought it to control logic but I found out my computer is too old and will not update to except the new drivers. So I’m trying to connect it to my iPad Pro via USB cable to camera kit which is basically the USB input for USB-C. I can get MIDI control but I cannot get audio to go through. If you happen to have an iPad could you let me know if it works on yours because I’m thinking at this point after trying most of the settings there might be something faulty with the unit or I need to use a different method of USB connection. Note that this method I’m using worked with my Yamaha MODX 6 keyboard and works for recording all my usb audio gear and the Fantom 0 is the only one I cant get audio on. Thanks for the video and any insight you could provide in this matter.

    • Soooo..... this took me AWHILE to figure out. But, my Fantom actually shipped with Version 1.0 installed on keyboard itself. Low and behold, I figured out trial and error that I needed to update the board from Roland's website with Version 1.01 - I think I watched an official Roland video on how to do this with an external USB drive. Try that first?

    • At this point I left an email message with Roland because they no longer have phone support which is freaking ridiculous. I have to wait for them to reply and then reply again and so on which could be three or four days before I get my answer instead of a small phone conversation. Anyways if I have to buy anything else to make this work I will take this thing back to the store and Roland can have it back. Everything that I have including the helix, Headrush, Other Roland products, Yamaha, Boss….. well you get the point all work plug and play. So there is no reason why it should not work with my iPad Pro being the Fantom 06 is updated to the newest version and so is my iPad. I’m just tired of buying something that somebody had to design that doesn’t work with standard configuration. I use Apples standard method and everything else does. So far it is a love-hate thing with this keyboard. Same with trying to do a sample or play anything through the input it took forever to find out how to turn it on. So you see what I’m getting at. If you use the iPad yourself you understand that Apple is usually always plug and play with the exception of OS X. Sometimes the laptops need a driver. Well if you have any luck please fill me in on how to get audio and midi to work. Thanks

    • I'm thinking about making a video about this issue. Here's the bottom line, if you do not load up a shit load of sounds in a patch, there are no issues. My fantom is a glorified live Looping tool in my studio so there are never any sounds running off the cpu of the Fantom itself, apart from the single zone Preset or whatever. I suppose if you wanted a 16 piece Orchestra split across all notes, maybe then you'll have an issue.

  • I generally agree with you, but I do have a few concerns about the Fantom-0: 1. The pianos are disappointing. Roland has apparently removed string and damper resonance from the SuperNatural pianos on the Fantoms (it was an adjustable parameter on the FA series--but not the Fantoms). On the big Fantoms, the V-Panos have it, but on the Fantom-0's, all of the pianos are a little sub-par. 2. The expansion memory is limited. Even on the big Fantoms, you can run out of memory for samples, but on the 0, you only have 256 Mb for expansion packs AND user samples. That means that only two or three packs will fit at once. And they take a while to load. 3. The vintage synth model expansions (Juno 106, Jupiter 8, etc.) are free on the big Fantom, but $150 each on the 0. That's a non-trivial $600 to get all four. And you can't run the N/Zyme expansion at all. All that said, the panel layout and DAW integration is great, and the action iand sequencer is better than an MODX8. But just for the internal piano and internal sounds, I think that an MODX8 sounds a little better. It's a judgment call.

    @geoffk777@geoffk7772 жыл бұрын
    • I can honestly tell you that I considered all of that and I realized there's a pretty simple solution. VST Pianos of some manufacturers are not that bad and you can load them up alongside any on-board sounds as it's very own zone. I'm using a laptop 💻 when I play gigs so the marriage between Ableton and the board is amazing. I think most people use DAWs live now. It makes sense to me that they (Roland) figured people would use VSTs with this thing, but for those who wish to just bring the keyboard and PA, I think even then you'd be okay, but I do get it, the base sounds are not great and the memory, forget it. I think it's important to note, that I have always been a Yamaha player. I played the motifs and the Fantoms and I always thought, Roland never got piano sounds right. Never, not on a single occasion did I believe a Roland, Korg, or Kurz had a better piano tone than Yamaha. I would have bought a modx if they put a drum pad on it. Shame. This is my first Roland product, but I'm not disappointed at all. It's inspiring to have such an incredible creative tool.

But people who buy it and expect to be blown away by the onboard sounds are going to be disappointed, IMHO.

I think these type of instruments are going to have more and more relevance when the customer treatment by the likes of Microsoft and Apple get more and more unbearable. The resurgence of modular gear could be an indication that not everyone wants to deal with the multi-purpose platforms, and that there are advantages to the dedicated musical gear.

I was told the 48kHz is for syncing video when we make MP4 video, but I don't know if this is true, haven't tested it and I don't use SMPTE when combining video and audio.

    • Synthesizer is a broad term and can apply to many keyboards. IF you want a first synth to learn sound design (how to create your own sounds) then, NO, don't begin with a workstation keyboard like the Fantom 0's unless you are highly technically skilled as a musician and a recording engineer. a dedicated keyboard to synthesis full of knobs, sliders and switches is the only way you will learn to create your own sounds (patches). I think the Roland Gaia is the perfect first synth with full sized keys. Remember the easiest synth to learn on is the one that looks on the surface the most complex. The synth with no menu and tons of controls on the surface will be the most fun to learn on.

I cycled through all kinds of stuff, mainly digital mixers and then this thing popped up. I thought... ya know if I can get the moog in there at the very least and have control of the daw, man I'd have to consider this 08... and consider I did for an additional few months 😆. In the end, I think yes, I have achieved this minimal setup that is maximizing creativity & spontaneity! It's also a very simple workflow to explain to my more advanced keyboard students. • Same experience for me. Got to play a Nautilus and Modx through the same sound system side by side. This is when I began to notice the deficiencies sound wise with the Fantom. It flat out sounded thinner. I always thought the Fantom sounded too much like my older Roland keyboards and I found out that Roland is notorious for recycling the same samples. I was able to confirm this a few weeks later for myself. The interface on the Fantom I did like alot. In years past this was Roland's big selling point, but both Korg and Yamaha have really closed the gap with these last two offerings. I got away from Roland with this fantom and went in a different direction. I wasn't sure I made the right call until my bandmates and people who work with our band commented on the improvement of my sound. This was something I didn't expect.
