Right it has been a long time since I made aKZhead video since this year's school year for my school was totally hectic...but finals are over and I am finally able to go back to making videos. Anyways lets move on to the car, in this video we'll be looking at the Volvo 164 specifically the 1973 Volvo 164 E and in this video we will be looking into the general details on this luxury sedan. Sure Volvo is one of those luxury brands that is not as well-known as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, or Jaguar but their cars do pack a punch to those more well-known brands.
By the way we have our own Instagram account so please do check us out at:
/ eleazarnreviews
We do hope you will enjoy this brief review on the Volvo 164 and I'd be surprised if you did, please leave a like, comment down below even add some additional information if you will and please remind us of any misinformation in the video, and have a little civilised discussion about the car. And even better please consider subscribing to replenish my extremely low self-esteem.

  • In 1996 my parents got a 1969 bordeaux red 164 automatic which they had imported from Munfors, Sweden. The same year we went on holiday near the area the car came from, but on the way in Hamburg we got stuck in heavy traffic and my dad rammed the gearbox in Park while still rolling which resulted in a big clang noise, nothing more, at least at first glance. During our stay the starter desided to kill itself, so we ordered a new one from Germany and it became my first repair job at 12 years of age, yaay. On the way back and already very close to home my dad wanted to be home asap so he floored it for over an hour on the Autobahn, doing the quoted top speed of 180 kph easily, but then the gearbox failed quite dramatically leaving a long trail of oil behind. The broken park-part destroyed the gearbox inside, all the gears were toast. The car was then towed and a specialist converted it to a 4 speed manual. After a few years my parents sold it and it was then fully restored to mint condition. Years later we came across it in a town near us and we made some good conversation with the new owner, remeniscing an so on. That car left a big mark on me, in beauty and elegance, I'll never forget it. Btw, since last month there's a new old Swede on my parents' driveway: a grey 940 Estate 2.0 Turbo with only half a million kms on the clock. After I fixed all the neglected maintenance it drives like a dream, again. Happy days, again!

  • Very nice video. I purchased a 1974 164E in November 1975 for $3700. It was the car driven by the mother of the dealership’s owner, and had been driven less than 4000 miles. The Volvo advertisement at that time was: A civilized car in an uncivilized world. Referring to the harsh weather condition.

  • I had two big bumper 164s in the 80's. First a 164E which was stolen by gypsies. They picked it up in broad daylight with crane on a lorry, it took then two minutes and it was gone. They sold it to a scrap yard for the metal value, £10. Couple of years later I bought a 164TE. The most wonderful I ever owned. It was stolen from outside my brother house in the middle of the night, again by gypsies. This time they got £25 because the price of scrap metal had gone up. From memory they made only five hundred right hand drive 164TE making it a rare car. I still have the service book and 8track I took out and replaced with a cassette player. When I went to Scotland for a holiday in it driving round the highland mountains I calculated I got ten miles per gallon. Just driving around London for work could be £100 a week in 4star petrol (price in 80's).

  • A good narrator having a good communication skill with clear voice to please the audience.....Well done buddy...... This video brings me back to 1973 where my Swedish MD used a Volvo 164 Black for his business activities in Malaysia. I still remember how stylish the car was and admired the luxury leather interior for a top executive. The driver Ahmad always kept it in sparkling clean showroom condition park at the Office main entrance car porch..... By-the-way I worked for Ericsson Telephone in Malaysia a Swedish Telecommunication Manufacturing company way back in 1972 in Shah Alam ...

  • Thankyou so much for your fantastic, informative presetatiion. Truly an elegant car 164e and mine did have the larger, fantastic Safety Bumpers that was used on all models following. I wonder if they had been added, but I very much doubt it, as the car was completley original. I had one the same colour would you believe and the same colour interior. I always say to everybody, it had the most instant heat from its heater. Truly it did. I loved it so much and couldnt stop admiring it. I would drive the Family mad when I parked it outside a cafe, so I could look at it whilst having my meal. I would say to the family, just look at how beautiful that car is. The front was superb. They would get sick of me saying it. It was a superb car. Fantastic views of the Body you have videoed as well. Cheers, John (Australia)

  • I had a 1972. Yes, there were a lot of changes in 1973. The car really surprised a lot of people with how smooth it operated and how solid and upscale it felt. The 144s were nice but felt different, not as luxurious. The 164 was a nice luxury car.

  • Very cool, the 164 -73 is in my opinion the best looking of the whole series. Dad of a friend of mine had one from new, ice blue metallic/ black interior - a very nice car in period.

  • My father had a 1973 model 164. It was light blue metallic with black leather interior and black carpets. I remember the leather had a pleasant smell and you could hear the clock ticking. The example in the video appears to have relatively modern wheels. My father's 164 had the standard wheel (like in the 144) with the central small hubcap held in place with one central screw. The 164 added a circular stainless steel wheel trim which push fitted over the rim. My father's car didn't have the chrome trim around the headlight and lacked aircon. It had a sliding steel sunroof worked by a window wiper type handle but no aircon. Overall it was my favourite of all the cars my father ever owned. I even got to drive it when I was just 17 which was quite a thrill. I also think the 1973 model was the best looking 164 as the 74 model added huge bumpers.

  • 164E -74 was my first car. Still remember that B30, endless torque almost. It was delivered by Volvo Penta so it's basically a boat engine.

    @FootprintMx@FootprintMx2 жыл бұрын
    • The torque point is very low at 2500 rpm. In my memory, it was for trailer hauling, with no need to revolve the engine too high, and is easier to drive in town. But it can be because it was a boat engine? I had a 144GL with D-Jetronic, the shop manual showed me that for every market the tuning was different. What do you think?

  • My first car was a 1974 164E in the exact same color and trim. My dad and I even converted it back to carbies, like this owner has (the fuel injection was primitive). You forgot to mention the 4 wheel disc breaks including incredibly powerful 4 piston calipers on the front. They were incredible breaks, that were popular for use on race cars. Great review, great memories!

  • In terms of sophistication the Volvo 164 does not quite reach the level of the Mercedes at the time. But in terms of hard wearing quality it does, and then some. In terms of comfort the Volvo seats were much better than the Merc, the interiour looked more luxurious. Anyway your review is great, you are a natural talent, hope you keep it up!

    @truxton1000@truxton10002 жыл бұрын
    • It is already a standard that Mercedes has a higher level than Volvo, but for Volvo to reach something that could quite rival Mercedes at the time was indeed astonishing. Anyways thanks for your comment!

      @keepinitezzy@keepinitezzy2 жыл бұрын
    • @@keepinitezzy I agree, and in terms of value for money it could be argued that Volvo was better. Also better rust protection, old Volvo's usually has less rust than old Mercs, probably also to do with swedish steel being top notch. In terms of long lasting mechanicals Volvo is at least equal with Mercedes.

      @truxton1000@truxton10002 жыл бұрын
    • Agreed, the Mercedes a neighbor had felt a bit more sophisticated. I feel the ride quality was similar, maybe a bit nicer in the Volvo at the time, though. But the Mercedes felt quieter and more upscale. Of course, the Mercedes had the image more than just about anything other than a Rolls Royce or Jaguar.

      @benjaminsmith2287@benjaminsmith2287 Жыл бұрын
    • With many Mercedes of this era, heated rear window, a, sunroof and many other things were paid for extras; my 164e had all these things as standard. I believe that this era of Volvo was, in many, many ways superior to Mercedes.

  • i like the older Volvo 164 with the curved frontbumper more, that looks more stylish that the straight bumper of the later 164. that was interesting to see the difference in the comparison in this video. i like the stationwagon form of that, the Volvo 165, thats in my opinion a bit more the Volvo than the 164 and i dont mean only the bigger room inside of the stationwagon form, its more what i think a Volvo is supposed to be for practicality for a family or for a single person who wants to go camping and sleep in the car for a night.

  • That is NOT a Volvo 164E, it has the wrong B30 motor. The B30E has an electronic injector system (160hp DIN), this one is a dual Zenith Stromberg CD175-2CD carburetor (130hp DIN). So either is the motor the wrong one or the badge at the rear is. No way is that motor producing 160hp (DIN). But a very nice-looking car and a great video. I did own a 1969 Volvo 164 with serial number 197 engine number 172 and then of course fabric interior. I did miss the sound of the B30 so no I only own a Volvo C303 civilian still with a B30 but a better camshaft for its lower torque range (only 115hp DIN). I doubt anything can stop it with its portal axels and gearbox-mounted winch...
