How Few LARGE JETS Does It Take to Break the Sound Barrier?

Welcome to another episode of Trailmakers! Today I am trying to break the sound barrier using only large jet engines. This isn't a hard task by itself, but the challenge is to use the fewest number of large jets possible!

About Trailmakers:
In the toughest motoring expedition in the universe, you and your friends will build your own vehicles to cross a dangerous wasteland. Explore, crash horribly, use your wits to build a better rig, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find on your way.
Welcome to the Ultimate Expedition!
Journey over grueling mountains, hazardous swamps, and bone-dry deserts on a distant world far from civilization - it is just you, your fellow adventurers and the amazing, jet-powered hover-buggy you built yourself. Explore, crash your vehicle, build a better one, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find along your way.
Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

  • Trailing edge drag is absolutely a thing in Trailmakers. Add rear facing wedges behind the wheels, on the tail end of the vehicle, and covering the entire back of the engine hit boxes and you're breaking the sound barrier with two engines.

    • Didn't he figure that out at some point but ended up completely forgetting it? You don't need backwards facing wedges for 2 thrusters btw. i just did it by making a scuffed chain of flat connectors around the side (and removing the entire floor that way) Just tried it, and it massively slows down the vehicle (like 100 Ks less)

    • I was gonna say rear facing wedges for better aero. Also blocks all the way from the front wheels to the back would get rid of 2-4 resistance arrows on the rear tyres.

  • You could also fill the space between the front and back wheels with some pieces to remove the 4 arrows on the back wheels completely. I don't know how much that would help tho. But the fewer arrows the better :D

And i can say: *_2 IS POSSIBLE_* . i also only used sideways aerodynamics.

  • 12:50 In the airborne update I believe the devs changed the way the fins work, so they are significantly less effective when something is in front of them, the same goes for spoilers but with the added factor of how many spots on the bottom are used. This conclusion is made purely by testing done on my own time, so i might be wrong,

    @DarktideVtuber@DarktideVtuber7 ай бұрын
    • Yeah, this is definitely a thing that was changed in Airborne. Tailfins still seem to work pretty well even when obstructed, but they do work best with direct air contact. The more noticeable change is that when wing faces (front, back, top, or bottom) are directly touching other blocks, then their lift is significantly reduced, which makes piston glitch builds a bit trickier

      @Loop_Kat@Loop_Kat7 ай бұрын
  • since the wheels prevent you from draging on the ground (even with a block right infront of them on ground level) you could have moved the thrusters and their foundationm one block lower, allowing you to delet the top laver of your cockpit fairing.

  • Initial guess, just based on your first test; 3. You're basically 1/3rd the way there. If you can some how harness 100% efficiency from all of them you'll be there. So overcoming drag is the big issue. Skis have weird air resistance for their shape, but I'm pretty sure out of all of the "wheels" they have the least ground friction in the sense of they take the longest to come to a stop and then you can also camber them to put them on their edge to get even less friction. That's at least been my go to for straight-line ground speed vehicles in this game.

  • If you started in a corner of the map and ran 45 degrees to either wall, you would have a lot further distance to run. Think of the square map as a triangle where N/S and E/W are direction A and B, and in a triangle after all: A^2 + B^2 = C^2. Basic geometry when you cut the square in half from one corner to the other by 45 degrees and make two equal triangles, yes? Hope that little reminder helps you next time you do a supersonic build attempt, ScrapMan! It might give you the time and distance needed to squeeze out a last Mph or two you need!

  • I think it might be harder with the space engine as I think they require you to not block either the front or the back I don't remember which. Which means your vehicle may not be able to stay as narrow or avoid aerodynamics between the engines

  • So, I just tested this build myself with several adjustments. By replacing all the connecting linkages with flat connectors (branch out to the sides from the engines, then bridge them together with more flat connectors), I managed to get the 4 engine build up to 1674kph/1040mph and the 2 engine build up to 1214kph/755mph. _Just_ shy of the sound barrier for 2 engines, but I think it's the bare minimum number of blocks required to make it work (there are other comments saying they broke the sound barrier with just 2 engines, but I'm not sure how) You wanna know the crazy part though? Just lose everything except the engines and the cockpit. Yes, even the wheels. Get three 4x1 wedges in front of the cockpit, 5 wedges along the sides and 4 directly above the seat to negate the engines, then just let it scoot along the ground on the flat connectors themselves. Not only does it break the sound barrier, but it does it with room to spare at 1280kph/800mph

  • I'm guessing 10 engines. Because the diminishing returns due to the weight added by every additional engine would probably be quite bad.

  • the best i could make it is 1500 km/h with 2 engine ( drag: 16 arrows with 4x1 wedge and 4 arrows with flats armor pieces and with 100 kg in the front area for the aerodynamic stability). Since i reached terminal velocity i'm pretty sure that's the best you can do without glitch since theoretically adding weight shouldn't make the car slower but only reduce it's acceleration. and you can't have less drag without glitch since the car fits inside the front area of the engine.

  • It wouldve actually worked with those flat connectors, since you can connect those together as well. Like, 5x1 and add a 2x1 at the end then flip it again and add another 2x1 flat connector

  • the back wheels had only 2 long wedges instead of 3, like you had in the front. when u added the 2 wedges to the back wheel it increase by 100kph so maybe adding that 3rd wedge there could have done it for the 2 engine.

  • I did a test with all the wheels and found which ones where the fastest and which ones were stable. The bike tires I found to be the most unstable. What they have in aero is completely over shadowed by their inability to actually use them. I had cars flipping at just 150mph with those wheels while everything else was around 200mph. I forget which tire ended up being the best but the race tire was definitely up there. I might upload them to the workshop if anyone is interested. If I do they will be under the name “test car” and each one has its top speed in the name. I tested them all with one dragon engine. Took me about an hour to test all of them and save the results.
