Most of the elite weightlifters do not have a neutral spine curvature during any of their lifts. They have cervical lordosis from the start of the pull (neck extended), T spine is extended maximally to get the chest up, at the receiving part of the lift (bottom of snatch, catch from jerk), their c spine (neck) is flexed and protruded (learn forward) at the overhead position.

Love the videos and inspired me to try Olympic lifting. Twi Questions: 1) what would be respectable max in clean/jerk and snatch for a 195lb lean 50 yr old guy (in shape - workout everyday). Do you think of this as absolutely weight or percentage of body’s weigh? I did 225 1x at end of workout but that’s as high as I’ve tried so far. 2) How much of an improvement in the first 6-12months can a beginner expect? Thanks!

Great info as always, Coach T. Quick question for you or anyone in your fanbase, if it isn't too much to ask.I've taken some time off of doing the classic lifts to do more "regular" weight training (the big 3 and bodybuilding style) to gain some weight and strength in those, specifically the squat. It's been a bit over a month and my numbers have been going up using good ole Wendler 5/3/1 in addition to volume work and I've been slowly gaining lean mass.Numerous reliable weightlifting sources say that if you don't do the classic lifts (especially the snatch) for over two weeks, you'd basically be starting from scratch or close to it, which is what my main concern is. Am I screwed?
@ErikfromEarth5 жыл бұрын
ErikfromEarth you're definitely not screwed for taking 2 weeks off! You might want to keep up front squatting and overhead squatting to retain your front rack and overhead positions, but it's not the end of the world to take some time out every now and then!
@doogleisfat5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Rich! I've definitely still been doing all the weightlifting specific mobility/flexibility drills and alternating BSQ/FSQ and Clean/Snatch-grip pulls. I'm more worried about the actual execution of a full lift as far as speed and explosion. I was thinking maybe incorporating more box jumps for the time being. I really appreciate the feedback!
@ErikfromEarth5 жыл бұрын
I did the exact same thing as you! I eventually got to a point where to make my clean and jerk go up I just had to get stronger overall. I tooks months off from the lifts, only executing them rarely. Just getting back in and after a session or two of oly lifting, you’ll probably be right back at it. It’s a good thing to do especially for newer people like me. I can stand up cleans SO much easier now that my squat has improved.
@lukemadden96905 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Luke! How many months did you personally take?
@ErikfromEarth5 жыл бұрын
I went from February right up until the start of July of front squatting twice a week and back squatting once a week, plus glute ham raises and RDLs. Very glad I did it. Had no problem getting back into the lifts. I’ve heard even Ilya Ilyin, one of the best ever, used to take months off after big meets from weightlifting.

This might be a dumb question but would the age of 26 be too late to start oly lifting to become any good or would it be better to do powerlifting?

Folks start in the 50s or older. There are age categories to 90 years old. Besides, Powerlifting is a totally different sport. Do whichever interests you more

I started at 29 doing powerlifting but I found it so boring after a while, a year later I discovered weighlifting and I loooove it. I find it much more dynamic and challenging, in a good way. As someone else said, I just do it for my health and for fun, not to become a champion. I've never before in my life trained as much as I do now, because I finally found something I truly like. Give it a try!

It’s a cue of intent. I even put a disclaimer on there. I believe in flat pressure. I have used so many techniques to fix issues in lifters pulls (i even state my solutions to these issues in prior videos i.e. stance, low hang, dynamic start, etc.) The pressure forward cue has been extremely helpful in mitigating problems with my athletes and their pulls but it’s not the only one. Different lifters have different problems. That’s why it’s important to have different ways to fix said problems.
