  • I'm a mechanical engineer stuck wondering why your elastic bands aren't firing as fast as you'd expect in this video and your previous, and I think the main problem is the stiffness of the materials. To get high speeds you need very high stiffness with some flexibility. A traditional ballista acheives this as wood is very stiff, but still quite flexible under bending, so you can store a lot of energy in the wood by bending it a small amount, and because of it's high stiffness it releases all of that energy quickly over a short distance. The elastic bands are much less stiff, so they have to be stretched much more to store a comparable amount of energy, and when they release it they do so over a much greater distance, and the speed they can relax limits the speed you can fire your projectile. This is useful for slingshots as you can apply a lower force over a larger distance to add lots of energy, but is more challenging to achieve at large scales as the elastic cables become quite heavy. That's why fibreglass composites are popular materials for bows, they are extremely stiff and have very high tensile strength, allowing large amounts of elastic potential to be stored and released quickly.

    • How they couldve improved it is by adding 2 cams for the elastics to run across, to simulate that energy storage (its also more efficient energy storage as its a pulley system) this is how all modern bows and xbows work and for very good reason, you can get the speed and power of a 300lbs war bow for like 60 lbs on a compound bow or xbow.

  • There's a lot of ingenuity to be found in old pre-electronic measuring techniques! For example, if you're trying to measure the speed of a projectile without a chronograph you could: 1. Create two large circles made of a penetrable material, and mount them to an axle the same way you would with any normal pair of wheels. 2. Rotate the axle at a constant speed. 3. Launch the projectile parallel to the axle so that it passes through both circles. 4. Measure the difference in the position of the holes from the first to the second circle. 5. Use that measurement, along with the distance between the circles, and the speed at which they were rotating to calculate the speed.

Cut them in 3cm stripes and have 4-6 of them. Make a v-shaped form of the plastic from kitchen cuttingboards for your arrow to travel in (polish them shiny with carwax). And lastly, melt cola cans and cast arrowheads in aluminium (special sand to make molds in are available at hardwarestores) and make the shaft in bambuu, pine or some other wood (weight of the head gets it were it needs to go, the shaft just keeps the trajectory straight) fins of paper or plastic. These improvements would give you a projectile that goes thru a housewall in 50meters. I hope this gives you a new perspective..

Yeah, you lose some range/power for it, but the consistency in where the shots land and having a more nose-on approach tends to make up for it. Though you'll probably want to use something better than generic duct tape for it next time.

    @ashir.4327@ashir.43275 ай бұрын
    • In a very short and superficial google search I couldn't really confirm or deny that ballista bolts in general, as broad as that descreption goes, did have fletching. I'd assume that some iterations would have similar fletching to crossbow bolts, however I did see some illustrations and descriptions that would make me think that they did not always have fletching on ballista bolts.

      @goShinigami@goShinigami5 ай бұрын
    • Even with his duct tape fletching, the projectiles just don't seem to be weighted very well as they all go nose up with any time in the air, so they end up just falling at an angle and not producing great results. Hence needing to be very close just to score a penetrating hit
