To "have your cake and eat it too" means to simultaneously have and not have something. If you eat your cake you no longer have it. It's a statement of simultaneous states, not sequential. Another way to think about it would be, "you want to continue admiring your cake, but you also want to eat it. You don't get to do both"

The phrase was originally to "Eat your cake and have it too" which might be a bit easier to understand.
