  • the only thing I really disagree with yanis on is that china isn't imperialist at all. I understand that their foreign economic policy is much more hands-off than the west, but what else would you call their treatment of the uyghurs but imperial? they are literally rounding them up if they show any signs of their culture and throwing then in cultural re-education camps or outright replacing them with han-chinese people. if that isn't imperialism, then imperialism doesn't exist.

    @stinkmonger@stinkmonger6 ай бұрын
    • It's not imperial if it's your own country. I'm not defending what China is doing to Uyghurs, but it's not semantically accurate to call it imperialism, when imperialism is the theory or attitude of maintaining or extending power over foreign nations, particularly through expansionism.

      @CelticKnight@CelticKnight6 ай бұрын
    • Just because imperialism is often done with racist justification does not mean all racist policies are imperialist. Japanese-American internment in WW2 was not imperialist, for example, but racist. Maybe "imperious" is the word you mean.

      @joshbaino3087@joshbaino30875 ай бұрын
    • Since the current trend of imperialism was set by the west (who colonized most of the world and have done little to reverse it), it doesn't seem fair to lump in the treatment of a minority group in such a large country with it. It deserves condemnation, but calling it imperialism is way too much. It's like calling a single rape case equivalent to genocide.

  • can somebody explain how you just "write down" 29 billion dollars of bonds? or write down/"expunge" any national debt? Aren't you liable in some way?

    @kimiaowsia8484@kimiaowsia84842 жыл бұрын
    • A bit late of a reply but I’ll tell you. Varoufakis himself explained that the agreements were in Greek law, not British law as the later ones were. As such they are subject to Greek rule and anyone trying to sue the government for the money owed would have to go though Greek courts... how do you think that would have gone? Then there is the other portion he explained a bit. If he wrote off the debt unilaterally Greece exits the Euro and prints its own money. The money owed was in Euro, Greece doesn’t have Euro so the creditors either take the D or they take the Drachmas you give them, either way they are kinda screwed. Then there are also other ways. The government can come in and say they don’t recognize the debt as signed by other governments because for example they had no right to sell the future labor of Greeks or future wealth etc etc. It’s been done before. Argentina told the IMF to piss off. The IMF left, Argentina didnt pay back a cent, nothing happened. Iceland, same thing. These jackals even do it themselves. Iraq or Afghanistan I can’t recall, owed a bunch of money. When the US entered 20 years ago, the debt was waved away magically and that’s it. Of course huge manufacturers were brought in to make roads and buildings in the middle of the desert that were never used but the people didn’t pay anything. The only reason to say there is accountability for fake money is if you believe the story of those printing it and selling it to you.

      @Hadoken.@Hadoken. Жыл бұрын
    • Those 29 billion were treasury bonds created under greek law. So yanis had 2 things. 1) Greek law says the finance minister can control the date those bonds mature, even after they've been issued. When he says "write down" he means pushing the maturation date (the day the government has to pay back the bonds) backwards by perhaps 50, 70, 100 years. 2) As they were held under greek law, any challenge to this date changing would be heard in a greek court, who would have ruled in his favour even if they didn't have this first power.

He also completely ignores the ideological tie between Germans and their Greek "ancestors" who are nothing but burdens anymore. Can anyone else spot the danger in this short-sided interest? China is leaching Africa dry, and going to leave the Africans with having to deal with serious climate change and no natural resources to mitigate them. BTW, I also don't think a cold war with china is the answer either. As far as the Eu protecting you from your own govt: just ask someone in the UK. • The problem is that in order to do that you need investments and a healthy economy but when you have to pay a huge debt you don't have much breathing room and your economy suffers. Of course you also need to avoid corrupt politicians who pocket the money of the investments, don't care about justice being served , having healthy competition in the private sector, having a healthy pubic sector, investing in your people so they can be productive, hunt down the local mafias instead of joining them etc . But poor uneducated people who are desperate tend to eat the propaganda of those politicians so it's an endless cycle , someone could help break that cycle if they actually cared and had a real role to play like the EU.

      @silotx@silotx Жыл бұрын
    • @@silotx the problem is with the people that trust political parties. I would rather trust a single independent politician that isn't part of any political party and only cares about his/her constituents at the local level. and key here is also giving people more power at the local level instead of large federal government and establishment to take care of something. I believe that people that pay taxes at the local level should only be invested in the same local region. what some of the taxes people pay to the government of course should go for national defense(military) or for a national construction project like a railway system or roads. again, abolish political parties. trust your politicians at the local level only. and if they aren't good, replace them.

    • If you think of it in terms of what women have to put up with from men, even just to keep the peace sometimes, then it appears masochistic in order that relationships with men can function at all. It is probably more self loathing misandrist if anything. You can now go back and watch the rest. It was worth it and Zizek didn't contribute much more...👍
