Today I want to take a look at an incident between Jacob Trouba and Joel Armia from a couple of nights ago when the New York Rangers played the Montreal Canadiens. That and more on tonight's NHL hockey video.

  • I think the reason that people are upset is that Trouba has a history of being willingly irresponsible with his hits in a way that leads to injuries. If he's not punished for bringing up his elbows like that now, he has every incentive to injure another player in the playoffs, especially since it worked for the Rangers last time.

    • You're acting like the refs don't call penalties on him like he's a Crosby or a McDavid. Nah dude. He's an average, if not below average, defenseman. His hits are clean. Only reason everyone shits on him is that yes, he does go for people with their heads down. Pretty easy to be seen as a head hunter when their head is tucked in their torso looking down at the puck. If he truly was a dirty player like you all think, he'd probably be going for slew foots, knee on knee hits, cross checking, hits from behind, and definitely he'd go for charging. This is 100% a penalty, but if you at all think he was doing this to injure the guy and not to just slow him down then idk man. I will concede however that homie needs to keep his damn elbows in. I don't even like Trouba lol. He sucks ass.

  • People are overreacting specifically because this is Trouba. He has a history with cheapshots, and while elbows to the ribs (or anywhere, for that matter) are always forbidden, this one was totally uncalled for. He missed his guy by a mile and couldn’t resist the urge to at least lay a dirty hit. I’m not saying it deserves a suspension. Not even a hearing. But Trouba being Trouba, people will react. Like people reacted far more when Subban slew-footed anyone. Or each time Stützle draws a penalty by falling on the ice like a dead cat. Or each time Murray pushes the net out of its… ah, you get the point.

    • This. This is exactly the situation. When you've crossed certain lines repeatedly, people just don't give you the benefit of the doubt anymore. I've never really been a huge fan of the "attrition" model of hockey strategy, that is, get in all the licks you can, legal and illegal, to wear down your opponent and soften them up for your offensive guys to take advantage. I wouldn't be against it in the slightest if it was limited to just legal contact, mind (and I'm referring to legal contact as specified by the rule book, not legal as enforced by the officials). A legal hit can still be extremely effective at taking someone off their game, making them a little less likely to hold onto the puck for a microsecond longer than needed. But Trouba doesn't really have that line in his mind - if he can't make legal contact, he'll make illegal contact, and sometimes people get injured.

      @VoIcanoman@VoIcanoman Жыл бұрын
    • Kind of hard to say he has a history of cheap shots when he has only been fined once for a slash and suspended for two games back with the jets. He's definitely towed the line in multiple instances and brought up some questions on what should be legal or not but his official history isn't that crazy. With that being said he definitely deserves some criticism and the plays to be reviewed and he be fined/suspended as the league sees fit. This narrative of him being a "dirty" player seems to be a bit contrived though considering his report card in comparison. I might be missing some stats though. I couldn't find a record that went over multiple years and didn't feel like scrolling through multiple lists. I'd gladly be corrected by any other history he has had.

Dude went for a lay and size difference just had his elbow conk me square on the dome, he instantly apologized and I knew all was well... it happens. Some contact is funky when size is factored, if I was taller or had more hops he wouldnt have tried to return to neutral... Earlier in the same game I got an elbow low on a spin, again it happens but that is one of those "damn I read it too well" kinda hits. Cut off too hard, the natural move is what it is. This however is just intentional what the fuckery. I wouldnt suspend dude over it but he deserves a fine. There is following through the check and then there is... The difference between this hit and the cross check on matthews you showed is that it was done with an elbow which is pointy and much more dangerous than the middle of a carbon stick. People would be overreacting if they asked for a 10 game suspension on Trouba but as far as i've seen they're just calling him out for being the rat he is.

He drove his elbow into the torso because captain IQ missed his check and his brain knew if he didn’t do something the habs had a clean I think 2 on 1 or 3 on 2. Maybe he should worry about defensive coverage before taking Junior A level runs at guys. I said in the last post he was on the ice for both Habs goals that game, so last laugh to Joel. Now that he’s confirmed injured I’m a little more on the side of this should have been a fine to at least draw attention to it.

  • I don't like dirty hits or players who have an insanely high % chance of injuring people given their record. This is not good for the game and is honestly excessive, especially in a regular season game where the schedule is already a grind and players are just trying to get by without injuries until the playoffs. I don't think intentional injuries are fair to the fans of the other team or the GM. The player or the team doing the injuring is never punished anywhere close to the victimized team. You might get a game suspension or two while the other team doesn't have their player for what could be weeks or months. The economics of this trade are so advantageous to the dirty hitter that that they are incentivized to do it, especially in the playoffs (which is how they beat Pittsburgh).

In our last meeting with the Sabres, I watched said player hold onto Thompson’s jersey for a good 3-5 seconds…beyond amazed he didn’t get penalized, he should have. However. I have noticed that the refs are calling nothing, and everything. In my Bruins 6-0 ‘practice’ against the Flyers, Coyle got high-sticked by a Flyer right in front of a linesman. However it was believed to have been a puck flying into Coyles face, no call made, would have been a double minor otherwise. Not 2 minutes later, Greer was called for Goalie interference when Hart was behind the goal and he was being pushed towards Hart by a defender. Should have been coincidental contact because, though Greer did appear to try, he couldn’t avoid the goalie. I try to be unbiased, but I am only human so, I may be unintentionally biased. That hit by Trouba initially looked like a shoulder on shoulder hit, took a few replays to realize it was right under the ribcage, yikes

  • Elbows are illegal, and that's all this hit was. It was a clear attempt to elbow player in a an area that might harm him. Players like this know that if you catch someone in the kidneys w/ an elbow, you're going to injure them. That's the dirtiness of a player like this. They aim for those areas that seem like they're not as harmful, but in reality, they're more likely to cause harm. In this instance, he's not headhunting, so it gets written off most of the time, but it has the capacity to do a lot of damage. In the clip you mentioned alongside it, where he hit another player w/ their head down, he leveled a defenseless player. This is something football, at both the college and NFL, levels have banned, b/c it's so dangerous. Players like this keep taking shots until one of two things happen: 1) They either really injure someone, or 2) Players around the league decide to seek their own form of justice, and they begin to look to take this guy out.

  • Idk about the whole kidney analysis on this one (although I haven't seen the injury report). I think we're forgetting that our guy has a whole ass rib cage there as well, and that's far more likely to be broken from a reckless chicken wing play like this.

  • It’s because he’s the best open ice demolisher in the league , and people don’t like to see their players get crushed. Destroying a guy in the open ice without taking a penalty is super difficult which is why you don’t see it very often. It’s not like smashing a guy into the boards, NHL players are very shifty.

  • Hits to the kideny can knock out the best fighters in the world and when you check someone you don't use your fucking elbow and the way he throws his elbow is very similar to one of the ways you throw a elbow in a fight but that said judging from some comments this is how he throw his hit sometimes so it not on purpose but it still very dangerous and should not be ignored.

  • He's head-hunted multiple players, especially in last year's first round against the Penguins. When you have a HISTORY of elbowing players in the head/kidneys, it's just ignorant to point to only one instance and give the goon the benefit of the doubt.

    @Impuhlz@Impuhlz Жыл бұрын
  • trouba has the biggest history of elbowing people tho you just can't give him the benefit of the doubt anymore, i don't have ant problems with his open ice hits, i do with those that involve elvowing

  • It's dirty, but it's not like the worst thing in the world. I think he just got unlucky that the hit was in just the right place. A player like Trouba isn't going to get the benefit of the doubt that he didn't mean for it to be as bad as it was.

    • @@Gav_Rangersfan You don't know what happened in the locker room. There is more behind the scenes that you don't know of. He probably rallied them up and got them the motivation that caused that streak. He's a good leader, and they chose him to be captain because they all think so. You don't have to be a great player to be a leader.
