572 billion Dollars.
That’s the total revenue Walmart generated in 2021. With over 2 million people working for the company, it is the largest employer in the World and the biggest retailer in terms of sales. But building such an empire was no easy feat. It all started with a poor farmer, who after being told he had no career in the retail business, decided to open his own store.

  • If Sam was alive today he would be appalled at the way the associates are treated by his company. He flew his own plane and visited stores wearing jeans and a baseball cap. He was an incredible human being but Walmart today is operated by individuals who couldn't care less about their employees.

    • Those who have never worked at Walmart will never understand, o ly argue and disbelieve. I say take the Walmart challenge see how long you last. At the store I worked at has the highest turn over in the state, from managers to associates. Some last a day,one during orientation was shown her department, she never came back. Few other u til the granted meal break. If the store had enough help. You had to ask permission to go on break, take lunch break, use the restroom, the front end manager found out you left with Noone to cover tour absence. Was severely disciplined. I enjoyed being called into the office, was called in once a week. I won everytime. The denied restroom privileges and lunch, I called OSHA reported the infractions. Next day a meet with several managers including the store manager, I pleaded my case I never had to call to have my absence covered. Front end manager was none to kind if she saw you stand in the bathroom doorway and state I have no one to cover you got to go back. I stood up to her as well after enough times she left me alone. Not all Walmart run this way mine was.

  • My mother worked for Wal-Mart when Sam was in charge. He knew there were a lot of M&P businesses just barely there, with no future in the long view. He sent small teams into towns where there was going to be a new store. They would go around to the small businesses in the 2 or 3 months before Wal-Mart opened and explain that they needed to change the way they operated in the Wal-Mart world. Walmart is a discount retailer with a massive supplier base. They typically do not go beyond what will turn fairly quickly. She went into bicycle shops and explained their 100.00 bikes were going to be 75.00 bikes in short order, but Wal-Mart was not going to get very much above that line, so, they could move to a higher line of bikes, like a 200.00 bike, and WM would not be in that market. One bike seller took them at their word, and dropped the 100.00 bike, when Wal-Mart opened, but offered to assemble a Wal-Mart bike in their shop for 5.00. They sold lights, horns, fancy addons, and the kids knew they had a layaway plan for 2, 3, and 400.00 bikes. When the basic bikes were no longer good enough, they knew where to go. The bike shop flourished, the guys at Wal-Mart referred parents to the shop when they needed repair. That particular shop outgrew their little shop and added expensive bikes to their line. Walmart still sells basic bikes, that shop still assembles them and they have a 5.00 assembly fee, BUT, if the family buys stuff for the bike, they can use the 5.00 as a gift coupon on the purchase. That bike shop is still in business, but he stocks 500.00 and up bikes along with his 200.00 ones now. Not everyone did this, and fought them on their own turf, they all failed who did not change some of their ways.

While i worked there in the grocery end of the store I was eligible to move over to change your oil and I did apply. How much knowledge and automotive education do i have? I Google search, ask folks on forums and download service factory manuals for my cars to try and do some of my own work. Basically, I wing it. While i worked for that company one of their automotive service manager moved over to manage us at grocery. Her experience, zero. She came up to us on her first day and said she was going to watch us work to learn. The person who took her place in the service center came from the homes area. They shuffle their managers 2-3 times a year, drop any managers they dont care for to promote people that sleep around with managers and management cronies. More often than not workers know more than management because as workers managers spent their time in gossip and hooking up, so they stand by the “fake it till you make it” motto. Except, the Walmart version means lie your ass off and stick to it (fake it) until you frustrate workers and customers into believing or dropping it (till you make it).

  • I’ve never worked directly for Walmart, but my family’s landscape company did the summer outside maintenance and winter snow removal. They continually ask for more and more to be done “outside of the scope of work”. As laid out in the contract. They expected outside contractors to go above and beyond the contract terms. (3rd party), they hire national and regional outside companies to oversee the work done outside their stores. Whenever it fit their schedule. To know surprise we didn’t get an opportunity for renewal of the contract. Great!! We’re able to make sooo much more money both summer and fall. Working for the corporate chains, you only get “x” amount of dollars for snow removal, whether you’re there 1x a year or 100x. In a heavy snow year, we were lucky to break even with both fuel, salt and equipment costs combined. Anyone who thinks working for the national store franchises will make them money… good luck. When we did get the contract for both Targhetto and Walmart the same 2-3 years, it was WAY more work than it was worth it. Always needed their manager to sign off on each snow removal completion. If you didn’t clean up where extra bread deliveries are stored outside abd transferred into from truck to store (contract did not say anything about that). But when you used their contract against them… they were furious they had to pay out more money!!
