  • Sold all my Sony gear, and got the Z8 and 5 s lenses, LOOOVE IT!! NO REGRETS! I’ve shot everything and tried many systems, and I must say, this is my best camera ever!

    • Don't you miss Sony autofocus?

      @amermeleitor@amermeleitor9 ай бұрын
    • @@amermeleitor Why would he? any professional photographer that has tried both systems extensively will tell you that the autofocus performance of the z8 and z9 is very up on par with Sony and canon offerings. While those 2 can edge Nikon AF in a few aspects , overall people that know how to operate their autofocus will still tell you that Nikon AF works perfectly and it does. People grew clinging so much to tech that they dont even learn their gear but are quick to go online and spew shit about Autofocus performance. Its funny because the pros are praising it and yet some youtube wannabes think Nikons AF on the z8 and z9 is miles below that of canon and sony

  • I get the chills, every time I take the Z8 out. I waited 3-4 years to buy the latest body, while I built my Z lens collection with the Z6 and Z7. The jump to the Z8 is indescribable- and I feel as if I have only started to figure out what it can do. I shoot both outdoor portraits and live sports and it makes both a joy so far. A huge thank you to Matt for "being our guide" through these past few years into the mirrorless journey. You helped convince me to be patient and not switch to Sony and I'm SO happy I stayed! Cheers, Matt!

I have also been using it for travel photography. I am amazed at the level usability. I love your work. I feel like I get a fair report on all the Z cameras and lenses. The "use case" approach you use is very helpful. God bless. Keep these video’s coming.

  • Yes, loving my Z8. I hadn't intended to get one as i was very happy with my Z9 and my Z7ii, however, a recent dual camera shoot at an airshow, i was frustrated by the 7ii with its different control layout, much slower performance and inferior autofocus so, a few days later, I sold the 7ii and replaced it with a Z8. Now, with the Z8 & Z9 I feel very comfortable with this pair. As I am now within days of turning 74, I think these cameras will see me out!!!!

I had lost interest in photography the last few years but watching these videos is igniting that spark that I felt when I bought my first camera (Minolta x300) as a 15 year old. I’m about to sell my Nikon d800e and jump into the mirrorless world with a Z8 and 85mm 1.2 now. Feeling inspired and as a fellow melbournian looking forward to rediscovering this city through a lens again. Keep up the wonderful content.

  • Hi Matt! As we've discussed at length, the Z8 is a dream camera. If it hadn't been preceded by the Z9 and I hadn't had that experience, I might have said the Z8 was the best camera I've ever owned. Firmware: yes, there's a couple of things from the Z8 I'd like to see transferred to the Z9 -- portrait impression balance and skin softening, for instance; I NEED that! 😀 I do like the lighter weight and size advantage of the Z8 over the Z9, at the cost of battery life and minor overheating (that hasn't interfered at all in real world use). But, as you say, external power is facilitated by the PD USB-C input and is a no-brainer for video. Really, add any of the Z-mount S Series lenses on the Z8 and you have an absolutely top-notch rig. We're lucky fellas!

  • Hi Matt, thanks for the great videos and updates. I am an aviation photographer and I have moved from my D850 to a Z8 as my main camera. I have had it since the beginning of June and taken 12,000+ photos, covering 10 days of various airshows and events. The Aircraft 3D tracking is excellent, moving to focus on the cockpit, whenever it can see it. My keeper rate has definitely improved due to sharp focus points. Battery life is not good (compared to the D850), but I have several EN-EL15C spares. I wasn't sure that the Z8 would be a major step up from the D850, but I can confirm that it is. I am using my F mount lenses (80-400mm and 200-500mm) with the FTZII with no issues and I would say even sharper results. I have the 180-600mm on order and I can't wait to pair them. Like you, I have a recall serial number but no mounting issues and I don't use the lugs with big lenses. Keep up the excellent channel, even though you are costing me a lot ;)

  • I picked my Z8 on launch day, the first day of a 6 wee trip in Yellowstone National Park. I already had the Z9 and Z7, but the Z8 was the perfect complement to the Z9. I kept a different telephoto lens on each (one 800mm, one 400mm). It was great to be able to pick up either without having to think about different button layout or capability. The Z8 is essentially a Z9 without the extra weight and vertical group. I don't regret having a Z9, it is still the first camera I will pick up, but the Z8 is what I will use up if I'm trying to save space or weight such as hiking in the backcountry.

  • Love your video's. So far my experience with the Z8 has been spotty. As my first Mirrorless i found the transition, especially in focusing, quite the transition. The FTZII adaptor and use of F mount glass works on some not on others. 2 recalls has meant way too long downtime at the Nikon repair facility. To be fair the mount issue was done quickly ,my F Mount FTZ experience not good. Nikon says it was my 200-500 that was at fault. The lens works just fine on the D850 but not on the Z8.FTZII set up. Been over a month in repair, over a week after finish repair and waiting for a label to be printed and given to the carrier. In it's self the repair woes are a little separate from the Z8 as a camera, but very much an issue given the trips to the repair facility being needed.

My wife and I have had our Nikon Z8 for three months now, we are so impressed with the colour rendition and the detail you can get out of that Nikon Z8 It is mind blowing, In post processing we can crop 200% and still keep razor sharp detail, we purchased two Peargear 512gb CF Express be cards after watching your video, which gives us about 10,000 frames I don't think we need to worry about the second card slot, but we do have an SD card in there just for back up. • Hi Matt - Nice summary of the current status! There is little doubt that Nikon has arrived with the Z8/9 platform. As this tech moves into the lower line up (Z5/6/7/50/70or90? etc.) there will be little logical room to say that Nikon is not at the forefront of photography again, and even more incredibly at the forefront of hybrid video for the first time as well! Now that the bodies have arrived (just a short matter of time for the trickle down), it again comes back to the lenses and the Z mount, which is by all logic due to the shear physics of the mount, the best mount among all brands of interchangeable mirrorless cameras in the market. We have seen that the Z mount has now produced lenses that are simply superior to the competition. A case in point is the 24-120 f/4 S lens which is a mid-level lens designed for both the consumer as well as some professional application - and the Nikon version is simply better than Canon and Sony's (not so equivalent) 24-105 lenses. It beats the RF version hands down in build quality and most importantly IQ (where there is little comparison), and it likewise is better than the Sony - not to mention it does this while at the same time being the only one to reach to 120mm, which is a really nice additional reach over 105. But this lens is not the only story: all of the Nikon 1.8 S lenses are top of class as compared to the competition - same for the 1.2 glass (we should be seeing a third 1.2 lens installment soon), and the same even goes for the low end where the 40mm f/2 literally smokes the RF 50 1.8 - it beats it in build, IQ and in suppressed focus breathing - there really isn't any way in which the Canon lens competes except it is less expensive (you get what you pay for, and the Nikon is still very affordable). There is likewise no Sony 50mm range lens in the 1.8 space that competes with the Nikon 50 1.8S. The list goes on and on - we could mention all of Nikon's vastly superior long range telephoto lenses released last year - there is not one among them that has a significant competitor and so on and so forth. I think this is where the gap will continue to widen toward Nikon's favor - the body issue is largely behind them now, but they will continue to bring out better and better and more and more unique lenses that the others will simply not be able to produce due to their inferior mounts with steeper angles of incidence than the Z mount. Ironically (or not) it was Nikon themselves that pointed to the Z mount in 2018 upon the initial launch and proclaimed that this mount was the reason that their system was special and superior... I guess they actually do know what they are doing!!! lol By the way, I wrote this entire comment not for your benefit as I know full well that you are aware of all of these points, but rather to help your very nice video with the YT algorithm and perhaps more importantly for the benefit of any of your viewers that might not fully (yet) grasp what Nikon has done... and continues to do... and will continue to do into the foreseeable (and perhaps even distant) future. All the best, -PD

    • Yep the z mount is certainly 'special' 😁 they f'd it up on the Z9 and again on the Z8. Then refuse to say what the exact issue is. They have no choice other than to repair the cameras. It is not as if they are doing anybody any favours. Fanbois will harp on about other manufacturers having recalls, as if this somehow mitigates poor QC from nikon or suggesting we should accept recalls as part of purchasing nikon products. nikon really need to sort out their QC and ensure it does not happen in the future & stop trying to penny -pinch on using plastic chassis in top-end products. A bit more focus on customer relations too. Only 'special' people get access to the PD liveried straps for example & us little people have to go without. A bit more of an apology to Z8 owners. Would it hurt them to enclose an apology letter & maybe a goodwill gesture with each camera they have to recall?

      @wibbley1@wibbley19 ай бұрын
    • @@wibbley1 Interesting POV. To show that I am not speaking from bias - I do agree with you that QC should be addressed at Nikon - the same can and needs to be said for Canon and Sony, but that does not change the fact that Nikon could stand to improve here. Also, I agree that Nikon is not the strongest in customer relations. It think it is admirable that they go the extra mile to remedy their mistakes by doing free recall repairs (more than some other companies can say), but it is not easy to reach them sometimes and there is a feeling of distance between the customer and the company that I dislike. And yes, it is highly annoying to have the 2 recalls back to back - especially for someone like me that sent it in and right after it got back there was another recall so now it needs to go in again! So yes, this has been an unfortunate situation. That said, there is nothing cheap in the construction of the Z8 - It is very solid; much more so than the Sony A7 line or the Canon R5/6 lines - and yes I have used them all. I suspect that once these hiccups are ironed out that the Z8 will be a more or less bullet proof camera just as the Z9 is and has proven to be - having out performed Sony in arctic conditions for example. No fan boyism - just facts. It is a fact that the Nikons are the most rugged between these brands - if you don't think so, then you have not used them - nor have you compared them. Additionally, nothing you say about the Z mount changes anything in my initial comment. It remains the best mount in the full frame market. This is physics and cannot be denied - any denial is literally the height of fan boyism for another brand. Physics is physics - angle of incidence is real and effects optical design and there is nothing that will change that fact no matter one's inclination and deep desire to prefer something else. Your comment that only 'special' people have access to PD (Peak Design) straps - because that is what Matt was talking about, is also strange and ultimately not the case. PD straps and strap like accessories are quite affordable and are available to everyone. This is not to say that it doesn't matter that the strap lugs on a few Z8's failed (I think there were 6 failures world wide at the time of this writing), because obviously Nikon should have made sure that this was not the case, but it is true that many pros - myself included - rarely (if ever) use straps or when they do they do use straps, they do not attach them to these lugs. Still, if the lugs are there they should work - I'm sure that this will not remain a problem with Z8 - just the first batch and the rest will be perfect. I do understand your frustration if you are in fact a Z8 (or even a Nikon) shooter and not just trying to run Nikon down, but it is important to weight the pros and cons of these cameras against the competition and when doing so there is no doubt that the Z8 is the best camera at its price point and even at a price point far above its price - it easily competes with, and surpasses (in many ways) the Sony A1 which is literally $2500 more than the Z8, so all complaints are relative. The Z8 stands today as the best all around hybrid full frame camera ever made. Canon will have a response with the R5 II and Sony with whatever next A# iteration they make, but today there is no doubt that the Z8 is the top of class when all categories are considered. If Nikon can just take slightly more care to be sure there are less hiccups at launch, they are poised to get their position back as the premier full frame manufacturer. -PD

  • It seems delightful but after investing in the z6ii only 2 years ago it feels insane to invest so much so soon. Especially with the specter of the Zf and Z6iii hanging in the air, idk. The idea of an even heavier camera (900g vs 700g roughly) is a hard pill to swallow. Especially with how much I enjoy shooting on the very light zfc

    • I have an even older camera - a D750 which is great (and lots of pro lens). The thing is you *don't* have to have more expensive gear. I could probably take some really great shots with my ancient D70 and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. New equipment is great if you really are pushing the limits like high speed sports in low light with a minimum of 1/1000 second or a concert in very low light or any other fast paced pro work where you need to get the shot. But often people who are not doing any of that kind of work feel left behind by new feature packed cameras. You're not! The best shots come from the photographer, not the camera.

  • I owned a z9. It certainly was loaded with features that made it the best camera I ever owned. However, it was a tank to lug around in the field. And, so many features were never utilized since I don’t shoot videos. So, away went the z9 and I purchased a z6ii. Sure, autofocus is now a challenge, but for 1/3 the price, I’ll accept that challenge and I still obtain some high quality results. Paired with the z20mm f/1.8 lens, astrophotography is amazing. So for the same cost of the z9, you can purchase a z6ii, a z20mm lens and a z100-400 lens! And like I said, results are extremely acceptable when shooting stills. I’m waiting for the next generation of Nikon cameras to see if there will be an improved z6iii.

My lens purchasing is also on hold, even the 170 to 600 which I would love to get, because there’s no replacement for my nearly 5-year-old z6, and the z6ii, which will be 3 years old is not enough of an improvement now. The rumors seem it suggests the next camera will be a ZF which I think will be a scaled-down version of the z6ii as it doesn’t make sense for the retro camera will be more powerful than the current model.

  • Hi there, i am using the vb 50 from smallrig to power on the z8. even with external power supply it gets overheated, i think its the warm climet In Greece. So, in my mind i have 2 questions. First, does the external battery powers on directly the camera or it goes throught the Enl15 first? And second if it goes throught the enl15 it means it is charging the camera and also powering on the camera so in this case you are building extra heat inside the camera from charging and powering on the camera, so the obvious work around would be to use a dummy battery. My next logical step was to search for one but i had no lack finding an approved one. I have tried to communicate with nikon in Greece about dummy battery but there responce was like 'do we even sell cameras?'

OK 102Mp and the brilliant Fuji lenses help the resolution and dynamic range advantages of the bigger sensor but I'd say probably 3/4 of the time when i have both cameras with me, the Z8 comes out first. And if i could only take one with me, its a no brainer. Probably the best all round camera I've ever used.

  • Wait, what's that, beep....beep...beep - the nikon money truck backing up 🤣 I agree with Matt's words, Z8 is a fantastic camera, electronic shutter is a game changer, no longer worried about mechanical stress shooting at a zillion fps. However, the heating issues should not be there. nikon should have leaned from all the fuss with other brands that cooked. Buying a chunky camera, weight is a secondary concern, so the few grams saved in using half plastic chassis? More like they could save a few yen. Should have been all metal and this extended to the outside, possibly using the base as a heatsink, either with built in fins, or optional bolt on for video use. Recalls, well yes, nikon are repairing the two recalls. Again neither should have happened with proper QC. Having a camera taken apart to be fixed really takes the shine of the product for many users. Not every region has multiple service centres, in the uk, nikon closed the only one, down. Repairs go to central europe (although it seems they are now using a tv repair company in the uk, for the recall work). nikon refuse to tell us exactly what they do for the recall work. Why? I'm sure the competitors have already pulled a Z8 apart for a look-see. If a production worker failed to put a blob of thread-lock on the lug cross-pin, why not just tell us? After the huge wait lists for the D850, and my jump to mirrorless being the Z8, I made sure to be on the day one release list. Have learned my lesson. Waiting five years to go mirrorless, wait a few more months to see how the product performs in the real world. Will not be rushing to buy the Df or 180-600. nikon have a huge dent in their reputation. Now known for 2 recalls in two months of their flagship(ish) camera. Whilst they are repairing the cameras (they have no choice, not as if they are doing anybody a favour) refusal to state the issue and offering no goodwill gesture towards the loyal Z8 customers is not good for customer loyalty or reputation.

    • Lol. Sorry are you getting a money truck? Ain’t no truck here. Recalls happen. The hand wringing to generate drama is more what this feels like. Overheating. So you shoot a lot of 8k for 60+minutes? Again feels like you are mining for drama. If it is a problem for you what is your usecase?The body is a composite carbon fibre nanotube construction. So you can come back to me on whether that is more robust or less. What goodwill gesture are you looking for? Sticker? Strap. Are you serious? I’d be far more concerned that Sony for example makes cameras and is not interested in firmware and an R1 might come more than 3 years after A1 and Z9. Can’t Canon make a flagship? Does Sony not support their customers after purchase. But hey keep trying to dig that drama out of somewhere.

We will get the same expeed processor in the z6iii and z7iii next year. Then we’ll get something better the following year. The best part of everything Nikon is doing is not turning their backs on the loyal base and continuing to put out firmware and enticing users to upgrade to the latest and greatest. The z8 is an amazing platform but it’s still about the user. In the right hands you can create art.

  • Product segmentation via firmware is fine... just as long as they bring any autofocus improvements to both cameras (and any future Expeed 7 cameras down the the product stack). That's been Nikon's Achilles heal for years now, and they're still a bit behind Canon and Sony. I think they need to do everything they can to make that public perception a thing of the past, and the best way to do that would just be to put top of the line AF performance on all their cameras.

  • "The Best" camera is a bit subjective, and I'm sure this was the intent with this video. Yes, the Z8 is a good all-around camera, but I wouldn't call it the best. It's perhaps the "best" semi-pro camera in the Nikon system, but it' s really about on par with the Canon R5/R5C and Sony A7R IV/V. But really, any of those cameras are good cameras, and really, if you pick up a camera from any of the mfrs (including OM Systems or Fuji) you're getting a good camera. It will primariy then come down to features that you need/want. That being said, I did go for the Z8 and can safely say that it will be a long time before I buy another body, as it ticks almost all of the checkboxes for me. The Z9 is a step up, but for me being an enthusiast, I felt that it was a bit more than I wanted to spend, and I'm personally not a fan of built-in grips, and I almost gave in and bought one but am glad I waited and got the Z8 (which replaces my Z6 II which I sold). Now with a Z5 (for low-light), a Z7 II and a Z8, I think I'm set for camera bodies for at least the next 5+ years (with the Z7 II being my landscape and portrait/people photography camera due to its size and weight), the Z5 is my low-light camera, and the Z8 is my "do everything" camera. Now it's focusing on trips, experiences, and photographic opportunities (and a few lenses perhaps mixed in, but I'm done with camera bodies for a while).

    • 'but it' s really about on par with the Canon R5/R5C and Sony A7R IV/V' I'm sorry to say I have used both the A7 IV and A7RV, and there is nothing on par with either of those cameras. one is 33MP with a slow sensor and can't shoot 8K or 20 FPS RAW, and the other is 61MP with a slow sensor much slower FPS. Both don't have a sensor shield, firmware support will be nowhere near the same as Z8, and this is where the list of differences begins. Canon R5C might come close, but has a massive exhaust fan, so it does not over heat, which makes it larger, chew batteries, and not weather sealed, and the fan makes it ergonomically not ideal for in the field photography. Plus it runs seperate operating systems, one for video and one for stills, which means it takes a 8 seconds to switch, the Z8 is something like 1 second to switch. None of these cameras have shutters dedicated to protecting the sensor. Canon only ships HDMI micro ports, not fulled sized. These ports are much more fragile. Sure any assessment like this is ultimately use case oriented. But only one of your suggested cameras comes close the the Z8. In Sony land the closest is the A1.

I'm hard pressed to think of a situation where you would 'forget' to bring a CF or have a backup for your 4k camera in the incredibly unlikely case of a failure and CF type B has been around for a bit and many of the big box electronic stores will carry them as well (Best Buy, Target, Was Mart). The reason why the Z8 has an SD slot is to differentiate from the Z9.

Just before my trip the lug recall happened but took it on my vacation anyway - using the lugs - hiking and lumping it around the north shore of Lake Superior and etc. Got home and confirmed it was on the lug recall too. Oiy! Waited a bit but decided to send it in since I have a dead space in my schedule (with a Z9 to act as the fill in camera - who uses a Z9 as a backup camera?!). Just the other day Nikon said it was time to ship it, yesterday received confirmation they had got it so I expect it to be back early next week. Since you have several pro bodies I'd recommend getting them taken care of (say one at a time) because you just don't know when the time will come and you'll need to do something outside your typical use case. If the work has been done then you have cheap insurance you don't have to worry about it. If I had not bought the Z9 first (waiting for the mythical Z8 to come out) I would not have bought it after the Z8. Only keeping the Z9 (for now) for it's wonderful battery life and to have an excellent backup camera to the Z8. The Z9 is so much over kill for me it's not funny. :)
