  • I can certainly relate to the saw owner. I went with my dad when I was 4 years old in 1983 to pick out his new Stihl 028 Wood Boss at the Stihl dealer. I watched him use it for many years while helping him stack wood. Then eventually he taught me to use it. After about 20 or so years it started running rough so he took it to a very respected local shop. When they called to come get it his saw ran worse than when we took it. So some time goes by and I took it to a second shop. That mechanic told me that the first mechanic bent the crankshaft and the saw was junk because a new crank shaft was $200 and we should just junk it. So dad told me to trash it. Due to all the sentimental value it had at that point even I couldn’t do it. So I shelved it for 12 years. Now 38 years after he bought it he was in bad shape and declining I just happened to find it setting on a shelf one day. I had totally forgot about even having it. Now that I have a good knowledge of how to fix engines I set to work on it. I diagnosed it as a bad condenser which they no longer sell. It’s been replaced with an electronic coil. So I ordered one of those and gave the carb a good cleaning. Ordered a new air filter and one more critical part was I put the correct spark plug in it. The first shop put the wrong plug in it. Now, when I used this saw as a teenager the vibration would make the carb screws move out of adjustment and I often had to reset them. I will likely remember the settings until I die. I adjusted the carb exactly like I used to set them and in 2 pulls the saw roared to life and ran as well as it had brand new. I cleaned the saw up spotless and sharpened the chain and then before I could show it to dad he took a bad turn downhill and passed away. I will never get rid of this saw and still use it regularly. Those who knew my dad knew he was not one to keep “junk” sitting around. He had tools to use and trash. He would not have let it set around and neither will I. I enjoyed this video. I hope you enjoyed my story. RIP Dad 3-25-22.

    • @@dsfkmgl6507 yes sir. I took the spark plug out and spun the flywheel with a drill. Spun as true as can be. The flywheel is beat all to devil on one side where the 1st mechanic tried to get the flywheel off without a puller. But it doesn’t affect performance.

  • I have one of these, it cuts like crazy. I just finished getting my 1983 stihl 010av running. It had no spark, I went through the points and condenser. Everything was fine, I tested the coil with a meter, it was fine also. The only thing that could have happened was that it is grounding out somewhere. It turns out that a wire was bare from the last guy to work on it. I heat shrunk it, to waterproof it. I put a new chain on it, it cuts so good, I'm planning on doing a full restoration on it in the future, but for now, I'll use it like it is.

That exhaust note was what I heard every summer cutting and splitting wood for the next year’s winter. I too have a very strong connect with that saw, as weird as that may sound. Awesome video! Can’t wait to hear mine running again; happiness I can’t even put to words. 🙏🏻

He bought it probably back in the early 80s, it sat and was broken for years and I had it repaired and got it running again. It's an old 028av super wood boss, looks just like that one. Also I love your videos, they're very informative and easy to follow along to.

  • My restored Stihl 024 got its first cutting job, today. A tree had fallen into our Legion parking lot several weeks ago during a storm. It was a 6-8 inch beech and had just layer down in the grass parking lot. I decided I would cut off as much as I could and come back with some help to finish cutting down the tree. The stump is buried in the woods and I will have to cut my way into it to cut it off the stump. It was just to hot, today, to do it all in one cutting. The 024 did a good job cutting of the limbs. I do not like cutting over my head because that is a dangerous situation. I stacked all the cut off limbs in the woods and called it a day. I still have to clean up my 924 and sharpen the chain. It started easy and ran great.

  • I love my 024. I spent a couple of months las winter rebuilding it. I put a new cylinder on it with a deco valve. It has all new covers, because they were missing when I got it, as was the starter. I repainted everything I could and refinished it’s original bar. It also has a new climatically controlled fully adjustable carb. It starts and runs fine. It has new Stihl decals as does its refinished bar. It looks like new, which was my intent. It uses a large mouth Stihl bar unlike a lot of smaller Stihl saws that use a small mouth bar. The 024 shares a lot of parts with the Stihl 026 and MS 260. Since I have both, I had quite a few extra parts left over from my restoration if these two saws. I almost put a 44.7 mm (260) cylinder on it but stayed with its original 43 mm cylinder.

  • Wow, slotted screws, even on the Hi/Lo carb adjustment! Did a quick check online & found this: "The Stihl 024 was first made in 1993 and like all good Stihl’s it grew into an MS version; when the product range in was rebranded by the company in 2002. It then became the MS 240. It is a midweight saw which is very popular today with homesteaders and farmers. It has a 41.6cc engine and carries a 16″ - 40cm Bar. Stihl classifies it as a professional petrol chainsaw." Wasn't expecting torx, but I am a little surprised Stihl was at least using Phillips head by '93. Still, (Stihl) it's a classic & good job restoring it, HG.

I always file and blow o0ff my saw every time I get through using it so it'd be ready to go in an emergency. That bar looks like it's been run without chain oil from all the heat marks but it'd run some more if needed. Just needed someone to take care of it. GOOD fix and BLESSINGS!

  • It is not the dirtiest saw I have ever seen. I acquired it a few weeks ago, also an 024. I took it to the quarter car wash and washed it throughly. It is now spic and span. I let it dry in a warm place for a few days after cleaning. It runs fine now, butI have to rebuild the carb to keep it running. I will use a Walbro rebuild kit on my 024. I have already replaced the fuel line and filter I will cook my carb in my ultra sonic cleaner to get it clean. I will probably replace the intake boot and impulse line, too. I hate to restore a saw and have to go back in it in a year or so. I would much rather replace parts when I have the saw apart. If I have any doubts, I replace them.

  • I finally got my new Stihl winter- summer shutter for my 024. I had an aftermarket air filter cover, because my 024 came without one. One thing I found was the slots inthe air filter cover, where the tabs on the shutter were not cleaned out, properly. I used my pocket knife and small Stihl screwdriver to open them up for the tabs. I guess I son 15 minutes careful.y opening them up😊. After the slots were opened up I just pushed the shutter down and it snapped into its position. You need this shutter to keep hot air from the cylinder reaching the carb, except when temperatures are below 40 degrees. You can block off this port with tape. I used aluminum tape until I got the shutter from Stihl.

If not, hot air will reach the carb on warm summer days and burn up your saw. • The video quality is excellent, and the point of view of the camera let us see exactly what is needed to disassemble and reassemble the saw. I visited your site today because my 024 Wood Boss acted odd during the recent blizzard & following -35 F wind chill cold. At first it wouldn't turn over, then the pull cord wouldn't retract. I brought it inside for 24 hours & the cord retracted and the saw started right up. I imagine it was simply too cold for the oil/grease to move freely. Later, after cutting up one of multiple trees brought down by the 26" of very wet & heavy snow that fell this weekend, the saw started running VERY fast. Too fast! I immediately shut it down, brought it back in, and pondered the issue. After it had come back to room temperature, I started it up without issue, but couldn't get the trigger to operate the throttle. Hence my trip to KZhead via Google, and I was SO PLEASED to see this video! Your disassembly showed me exactly what I needed to examine the connection between the throttle and the trigger--mine has broken. Or, perhaps, it has come loose from the throttle. In any case, your video has made it simple for me to see exactly what needs to be done to remove the parts and determine if I actually have a broken trigger-to-throttle connector, or if it may have simply come off the carburetor. Thank you SO MUCH for doing a lovely job of displaying the process for opening the saw & accessing the carburetor, as well as cleaning it up properly. Kudos to you for sharing the brake fluid technique! Regarding your request for opinions of how someone else might have completed the job, I respect and agree with your opinion that cleaning & replacing damaged parts is an appropriate solution for the customer. It's nice you've left them the option to get their hands dirty and have some ownership in the restoration, even with something as simple as replacing screws, bar, and chain. For that customer, you did the perfect job, filling their request nicely. For myself, I would proceed with replacing the damaged parts and make this saw work & look like it's a real tool instead of just a sentimental paper weight. Good job!

Ive heard it works very well and you don't have water and cleaner inside the chainsaw carburetor. What I do now is fill it with tap water, break open a generic dishwater soap pod, heat to 50°C and let it go for 30 minutes. Rinse in warm water, blow off with compressed air, and heat at 150°F in the oven until dry. I'm single and my dog doesn't mind how I use the oven. It works for cylinders too, although my cleaner isn't big enough to completely cover them, I turn them over and do it again. A Husky 61 cylinder is about 75% covered.

Well although it's not generic, the echo SRM airbox is pretty good and frankly the only one I've found. It's got a built in choke and everything. For carbs that have a choke paddle you can just cut those off and use the airbox paddle. It worked well on a rebuild I did for a homelite weed Wacker as well as a Toro rebuild

On old saws also get new fuel lines and impulse lines - new boot if the cylinder is being replaced. I don’t want to have to go back into it for a long time. I don’t retire saws. • I just picked up an 024. Otis filthy, more so than yours. I got it for $20, because it is missing a starter, carb and air filter cover, plus the air filter, carb nuts and starter bolts. It is #2 in my restoration sequence, because I am working on a 260P right now. I am sure the bar and chain will require a lot of work. It will be a nice addition to my chainsaw harem. I have an 025, 026P, 260P, 250 ( twofold them) and a bunch more. I have a single jet carb that I replaced on my 260P,so it will go back on the 024. I like the sound, too.

  • I have a 1988 024 AV which I have had for 30 years and used for longer. Almost ditched the saw 18 years ago due to an air leak I couldnt find (turned out to be impulse pipe split). Had a new sprocket 5 years ago. Original bar still. Engine rattles slightly so I changed the small end bearing, didnt make much difference, but the piston and bore looked perfect. Rebuilt the carb a month ago (it wasnt too bad actually after 30+ years) and it runs well after a bit of tuning. Use every couple of weeks to cut firewood and the only comment I can make is that its noticeably thirstier than my new Husqvarna. It'l probably see me out !

  • To get the carb off without opening the handle: open throttle. Block the throttle butterfly plate open (screwdriver or other suitable object through the carb throat). Pry the linkage out with a screwdriver or needle nose pliers. Should be done after removing the 2 8mm bolts and breaking any sticking gasket free so you have a little wiggle. I bet you can find photos or a video if you search for 026/ms261 carb replacement.

It happens more often than you’d think because lots of people just think a chain is a chain. Running the saw with that chain will damage the drive sprocket and the sprocket in the bar tip.
