Definitely get some iron in there.
I like the idea of putting the most frequently used clamps on that outside panel. It'll be less annoying in the long run.

Some iron added to that clamp storage rack would compliment the piece and celebrate your skills nicely! I wouldn’t hang things from the outside surface though. The smooth surface allows you to move freely in the shop, and roll power tools past it. Hanging stuff on the outside also creates the possibility that you’ll go from banging your forehead to banging something else as you try to maneuver around.
Utilize all the surfaces that you can. Why waste space. Unless every time you walk by you're bumping into the stuff. You are a blacksmith. Why wouldn't you use those skills to enhance the shop? I wish I could. (Just now embarking on the 500 dollar anvil/forge setup.) Thanks for the inspiration.

John, I’d definitely have no problem with putting iron brackets for the clamps, that would be super looking. Also I would have no problem with clamps, glue, and paper towels on the outside. Alternatively, you could put a swing-out “French doors “ on the other clamp chamber, keeping it neat. Personally, if you blacksmithed an ornate pull handle like a basket weave, or something to your liking, it would look fantastic. Sorry it didn’t go as smoothly as planned. -John
Working with Metal and Wood is Fun, I'm building a wooden Shop Sign for myself out of Elm and Cottonwood. Using 3/8" x 4" Inch Cold rolled round Stud Bolts, threaded about an inch on both ends, Sqaure Washers and Square Nuts. Panted Bolack. I enjoy Horse drawn Vehicles and Wheelwright work.
I love the idea of doing some blacksmithed hangers and handle for it and something like that would work in the blacksmith shop for hammers and tongs and sanding belts

I think blacksmithed clamp holders would be a good project. It's not a common blacksmith project, and should make a good video. Putting a few clamps on the outside would probably be an efficient use of space (and boost overall shop efficiency a tiny bit). I don't know that I would want to have it stick out very much though, small shop spaces tend to have enough catching issues as it is. If you could make a holder for a glue bottle or two that doesn't stick out too much, that would probably be best. Perhaps a small bottle holder that fits between two handles would be an innovative use of space. I just thought that once the clamp rack is fully loaded, you might find one side will be heavier than the other. If the rack pulls to one side more than the other, you could put the handle center somewhat inline with the "pull center" of the rack. That might just be a style issue more than a practical one in practice. I'm just pitching ideas right off the top of my head.

I wood use metal for the clamp brackets, stronger more compact. I would put hooks on the outside face for the most used clamps. I would keep the length to 3-4".
I would make use of every inch and use the side panel for storage as well!
We put wood handles on metal tool, so put metal brackets in a wood rack! Nice project. If put a handle on the outside I'd run into all the time. If there is a suitable space, I'd think about cutting a couple of slots in the end to grab and pull it out.
Running into anything that sticks out is my main concern as well.

Nice shelf if you add a handle you might as well add the glue box and paper towel holder. But that's just me.
I would definitely forge some racks like the woodpecker racks. Thinner material equals more clamp racks
Nice project, I see nothing wrong with combining wood and metal, I'd also suggest either some sort of handle or slot cut in the side(s) so you can get a grip and pull it out when you need it. Actually I kinda like the idea of slots better because you can keep a clean end and not risk hitting yourself as you're wrestling stuff around in the woodshop. I'd really like to see you forge at least some brackets for hanging some clamps on. That could be a great idea for a video and a great teaching / learning opportunity. Great video, as usual. John
Looking good John! As someone who has clamps laying everywhere around the shop, I need to get more organized myself. Looking forward to part two.
For my squeeze clamps and hand clamps, I use a 1-1/2" piece of aluminum angle. Screw it to the wall and line them upside by side. It saves the room by keeping them all close to the wall. I am very satisfied how well that works for me. I don't completely close the jaws to make removal and putting up a hassle. I leave them somewhere around a 1/4" open and they stay fine with the rubber jaws and gravity. If you are like me, you will use the squeeze clamps the most and I would definitely put them on the outside of the rack for quick access. I too built a tape holder and used an old hacksaw blade on the front lip to cut the tape. I made my tape rack to quickly remove from the wall and take to the workbench. To return it, it just hangs on a couple nails because thaat's what I had. Thanks.

All my clamp storage problems were solved by a simple board and 2 mounting brackets on the wall .i place them on board and screw or clamp them in.Its simple ,it works,no fuss and they wont fall if there is earthquake or tornado !
You are a blacksmith, make the clamp racks out of steel. In my shop flat space is at a premium. Use the end of the new rack for some of the smaller stuff. And of course a handle for moving the rack about. It's looking good so far. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Great video! Gave me some good ideas about tong storage. I would use that empty space for some of my more frequently used clamps. Forge a grab handle for sure (which will, of course use some of that available space).

Nice cabinet John, I'd go with iron for the racks if it was mine. I'd also go with the idea you have for the outside of the cabinet, it's gonna stick out a little anyway due to the handle so you might as well add the accessories you mentioned to it.
I am working on clamp storage right now and have been using French cleats. They might work on that outer surface. You can drive a screw in to lock them in or use a cleat hanger that locks in. Either way that outer surface could be really use for some good shallow storage. In my shop if it sticks out too far I’m worried I’ll run into it or catch it with something I’m moving around.
I would definitely make them out of iron.

You are a blacksmith as well as a wood smith go with a mix of both and in a shop if a space is unused it is a wasted space
Leave the outside a clean wall. Instead of a handle, cut an oval slot to pull out the clamp rack.
I vote for metal racks inside of the cabinet, instead of 3/4 wood. And I also vote for you to utilize the outward facing side as storage. You know you are eventually going to hang tools on that space. You may as well make up all the bracketry along with the ones in the interior.
What a great idea John. I'll be borrowing elements from this project in my own workshop. Personally, I love the idea of mixing forged elements with the woodwork. Perfectly complementary to one another.
Plywood is a pain in the butt sometimes, cool to see your special lady too. There is a shot (purely angle) on the second panel where you hammer the ply behind her fingers and I know youre a long way away but it still makes me flinch a bit lol hmmm I am with the Iron brackets to be honest, since you used metal brackets already it won't look out of place and I think its an interesting show of your skill set Can I ask what is the fly wheel under your bench grinder from? it looks like it still does something but I'm pretty sure its just stored Thanks for sharing
iron handmade by you is best. for the wood you may need to do tenons and half joints.

I love the basement woodshop. I'm a carpenter so I'm loving this content. My question is, how is the noise throughout the rest of the house? No late night woodworking going on I assume?
Janet doesn't complain, but I haven't been able to listen upstairs while running tools down stairs.
A lot of people have made great suggestions here, so I will just add one little idea. If a significant concern is running into the projections from the currently blank face, make two paper towel racks and mount them vertically instead of horizontally, and put them close to the edges at a height that goes from your shoulder to your elbow. That will give you a fairly large visual warning as well as a soft spot if you hit it. Make sure that none of the other bins, hooks, racks, etc , project out farther than the paper towel holder spindle. Also, do not mount anything below hip level so you cannot snag a knee or pant leg.
Except vertically hanging towel holders allow the towel roll to UNspin and pool all the towells on the floor. I'd make my grab handles out of something like closet rod and have one on either side of the face running from top to bottom. Mount them protruding from the face far enough out to be just a hair farther than the largest clamp so that as you walk past it you will bump into the handle and not the clamps or the brackets.
I think you did awesome. I tried putting a small chamfer on the edge of the panel going in the grove and that helped.

I would use the iron like a skeleton and laminate the wood over it for looks, as well as to protect the clamps from getting scratched up. Lot of work, but it would like awesome.
If you use grab handle then might as well put other things on outside

My long pipe clamps are only 5' but I have couplers and empty 5' sections to add on. I also have 30" sets that I gang together for glue-ups of multiple same panels like cabinet doors.

Some L brackets out of say 1/2 inch bar stock with a triangled support piece welded in? I bet you could whip them up in the forge in no time. For the side it depends on your walking space around that area. Anything sticking out i know i would hit my knees/hips on it all the time. But if theres room than giver! Love your videos. 🇺🇸🇨🇦

Hi John. Nice video. I went through the same issues about a year ago. I did use some of the metal brackets you used. I also bought some others that were better suited for my bessy clamps. I do think with your skills in the blacksmith shop you can create a nice hanging system (maybe even sell a few). I think metal and wood work and go well together. Sometime wood is just to bulky and not stir-ongoing enough.

Cut out hand holds instead of installing a grab bar and hang the camps on the outside flat against the face.
Would your 8ft long clamps fit on the outside end. I don't know how high your ceiling is. Maybe they might fit kitty-corner.
For your 8 foot pipe clamps; have you considered cutting them shorter then threading the ends and just using an extension with a coupler? Also, how well does the track saw stay in position? Does it tend to shift? Cheers.
Using a coupler isn't a bad idea if I need more longer clamps, but I doubt I'll Cut down and re thread the one I have. The track saw is quite stable, but it also has clamps if there is any doubt.

I would use iron because it will take up less space in the limited space you have.
I have no issues with mixing blacksmithing with wood working. Heck! wood plus fire ends in ashes. Yet, most blacksmith shops are made of wood, and most working is done with steel. Aesthetically speaking, wood and steel look good in my mind’s eye. Besides, why not use the bast of both worlds. As for the design; I think you simply moved you corner of the room into that chase. Personally, I’d stack firewood in the chase. I have other concepts for clamps racking, but will not share until it’s proven to work well. What is going in that corner that makes that specific corner high valued real estate?
The rafters are exposed in my shop, so the bulk of my clamps get clamped to the rafters when I'm not using them.

Wood or Metal??? I don't like the theory that says because it's a wood shop, everything needs to be made out of wood. If that were a viable theory, all of your screwdrivers, hammer heads, wrenches, drill bits, etc. should be made out of wood too. If metal makes sense to you - use it. Heck, use PVC pipe, rope or brick if it's what works best in your estimation. ...and "Best" incorporates things like: Your budget and what you already have on hand, how much time you need to spend or any other consideration that comes to mind.
About the oak pieces: If you want to build similar ones like these, try a through tenon-connection instead of glue and screws. Also there is no obligation to only use wood. Metal has it's place in a wood shop too.
If you’re rich I guess $40 a clamp holder is okay. Need a different design for my shop I guess
