    • @@polygamous1 Dear friend. I look at it like life itself generally. You know one day that your life will end and that is the only thing we can ever be sure of. It doesn't matter how everyone else around decides to live their life. It's about how you choose to live yours. We only need to be at peace with ourselves and that is the greatest struggle that we all face. All the destruction that we as human beings inflict upon other is only due to our own insecurities and lacking the ability, knowledge and support to face them. And yes, humans are too ignorant to come up with any solutions by themselves. All the progress in the material world that humans have made this far, is only and only due to the availability of knowledge and resources that the natural world has accumulated and provides us with...

  • I was in Berlin in Dec of 1989. I remember the excitement of the Wall coming down. It was a breath of freedom all over Europe. As it turned out, the only people who were worried were the Joint Chiefs at the Pentagon. Their reason for constant vigilance had dissolved along with the Wall. It was their meal ticket. The origins of WW2 center around territorial disputes and Eastern Europe has more than it share. The source of the controversy goes back to the Soviet administration of the Ukraine. It was a plan to neutralize the Ukrainian independence faction by putting the Ukraine into a larger administrative entity. The problem was solved until the collapse of the USSR when a much larger Ukraine became independent that included the East into the Don Bas and the South including Crimea and Odessa and this would be the source of future conflicts. Ukraine's mistake was to go nationalistic adopting a policy of Russian language exclusion at the encouragement of the US. The solution should have been to negotiated with the Russians much earlier on. The US and NATO are intruding in a family matter in its effort to move NATO's borders further East. What is never gone into in Western media is the significance and importance of the Russian Naval base in Sevastopol. Russia does have a case stemming from the rapid collapse of the Soviet Union. The attitude US citizens watching only Cable News is simplistic, not entirely accurate and dangerous. A "comment” on Aaron Mate's Dec 5th clip stated “I have copies of a US Navy memorandum from August of 2013 soliciting contractors for repair of facilities on the Sevastopol Naval Base. August of 2013” adding to this, Quoting Adam Schiff in front of Congress, “We aid Ukraine and her people so that we can fight Russia over there and we don't have to fight Russia here.” Where have we heard this before?

    • I concur with your summation post researching the subject matter. We in America don't have a media that informs us as Norm Chomsky wrote in Manufacturing Consent. The job of the media is for you not to think, it tells you what to believe.

    • You are wrong about "a much larger Ukraine", this country was never enlarged, Crimea and Donbass are parts of Ukraine from the begining;they don't ask for the former eastern territories of 1919,including kuban and Don cossak's land !

    • I have no skin in the game, I am neither Ukrainian or Russian. In researching Ukraine maps they vary greatly. In the 17century, who fought the Turks for Crimea? What was the 1860 Crimean war all about and what does the population of Crimea and the Don Bas consist of. today? And Poland's claims to Western Ukraine are still valid...

  • Thank you, Ambassador Matlock, for this important background so applicable to today's situation in Ukraine (2022). Your evenhanded approach is what is critically needed now to bring this slaughter to an end. I perused your book about the end of the Cold War, seeking more information about the agreement nearly reached by Reagan and Gorbachev to abandon nuclear weapons. Could you offer a complete account of the events surrounding what might have been an opportunity to save the human race from nuclear annihilation? People eater to save the human race and the planet would like to know what happened.

  • A smart and generally insightful thinker, I think he tends to let the Americans off the hook to quite an extent. This is, I feel, the reason for his very long pauses as he searches for the best-light words or phrases to soften the narrative. Jack also failed to mention the 8-year bombing of Donbass by Ukraine. His answer to the question about Stepan Bandera was lame, and mainly avoided.

    • He is not only clever but also wise, which seems to be rare these days. And he is also a loyal diplomat. At the time of this lecture he was 84, which could explain long pauses and thinking before saying anything; people are also slower and get tired more easily with age, for which media and young reporters have no understanding and patience. This guy is truly remarkable.

    • Whist they have created chaos and made many errors. For a truly unipolar power, they might have very easily acted in far worse ways than they have. Imagine what an autocratic fascist state like Nazi Germany or Japan would have done if they were in a similar position, it would have been 1000x worse for the world. I guess I’m making excuses for them, but there is some truth behind it. Jack Matlock is one of the doves in the administration, a quite brilliant diplomat and has 100% integrity and honesty, almost unique characteristics for a diplomat to possess. I’ve met a few like him in my time, but they all were all of his generation, alas, no longer is the case.
