  • I remember this match very well. Ferrero was leading 2 sets to 1, and in the fourth set was 3-1 and serve, when Guga did a stop, using the "medical time-out". It broke Ferrero's rythm. Anyway, this match was really a final. Guga was the best clay court player of the era; Ferrero was clearly the second. This year, Spain won its first Davis Cup, having Ferrero as the hero. He defeated Safin, Kafelnikov, Rafter and Hewitt (4 ATP number ones) to win the tournament. Two awesome players. Miss them.

    • Nunca mais teremos um atleta como Guga. Nosso país não investe nem em futebol,quem dirá no tênis... Guga foi uma exceção,tinha talento de sobra,e não precisou do governo.

      @PauloSergio-bs8ju@PauloSergio-bs8ju5 жыл бұрын
    • Acho que nenhum país do mundo o governo investe em tênis. Aqui no Brasil o governo apoiou numa época. Acho que duas coisas aconteceram. Ficou muito caro se profissionalizar no tênis. Os grandes torneios se concentraram mto na Europa. O circuito de acesso tbm ficou caro. O Brasil chegou a ter uns 30 challengers em ano e nessa época o banana bowl trazia para o Brasil os melhores juvenis. Segundo tema é a concorrência do jogo universitário vs profissionalizar. Naquela época não era tão acessível brasileiro conseguir bolsa em universidade americana com tênis. Então mtos jogadores tenta a carreira profissional. Eu que acompanho o tênis desde nível future vejo a mulecada sul americana debamdando as universidades. É muito mais garantido conseguir algo, o início no tênis profissional é muito cruel. Quem tem 25 mil dólares anuais entre os 14 e 18 anos para bancar a carreira internacional de um tenista que nem sabe se vai virar. Vejo no Chile, Argentina e Peru essa decadência. Mesmo na Argentina hj o Delpo é ponto fora da curva. Se esses tenistas hj top 200 argentinos com o talento que tem seriam top 50 se fossem europeus. O tênis sempre foi um esporte de elite, mas nunca foi tão caro se profissionalizar como é hj. Além disso, por problemas de apostas, ficou pior, os futures nem premios pagam mais.

    • Ron P I agree. But I think Del Potro is a rarity. Guys like Isner, Querrey, Karlovic, Victor Amaya (6’7” tennis player from years past) don’t dominate like the fleet of foot. It seems the best players are around 5’10” to 6’3”. Another guy who hit extremely hard was Marat Safin. I think he was 6’4” and could crush balls off serve, return, forehand, and backhand. Extremely talented and yet only won 2 majors.

There is a big difference in numbers and the way to win. And Nadal won that titles facing the best player in history Federer and the 3th Djokovic. Completing a point takes lot of gruelling rallies in clay court ( infact bit boring) which even gives wear and tear to the body of the players. Its a different skill set which was shown by likes of bjorg, jim courier, ivan lendl , sergi brugera , kuerten and then Nadal. good memories of kuerten brought back.

    • I believe prime Kuerten would have beat 2005 Nadal but after that probably not

    • I was thinking about this after watching the 2006 or 7? Final when he presented the trophies it’s a shame injuries prevented it happening Rafa would probably have been too much but I reckon Kuerten could have been the one to take him to 5 even in the early days federer had similar shotmaking but he just wasn’t suited to moving on clay if you watch Rafa he digs his feet into the clay to maintain court position if you watch roger he has to set himself almost twice that was his downfall really against Rafa.

  • all those short balls... 2017 Nadal (that is to say - not the best ever) would've crushed those guys so hard, like 6-1 6-2 6-0

    • Who says ? Kuerten would have given nadal a run for his money. He beat Federer at RG despite being below his best.

    • anupama gujadhur Yes I think so too. I thought Kuerten was bada$$ on the clay.

    • you're right dude... GuGa was fun to watch but his game just doesn't match up to what Nadal does on clay...alot of his shots were short balls or moon balls that just hang there and say "hit me"; Nadal's forehand and underrated volleying skills would eat all those shots for breakfast. Kuerten struck me as maybe the most creative shotmaker/improvisor on clay that I can remember; would've been must-see stuff to see him try to solve Nadal's get-to-every-ball athleticism and punishing uber-topspin ground strokes.

    • TheDeadlyKnight back then they didn’t have advanced racquets or easy spin power strings. I tried hitting with a prostaff 6.1 1995 version and man you really had to hit that ball in order for it to go over. if you were to give Kuerten today’s racquet technology and today’s strings, he’d probably dominate and over power nadal. Or any other player, the pros today have it easy now compared to back then, that’s why Agassi and Sampras and borg are praised bc they literally had to smack the shit out of the racquet in order hit hit 120 mph serves. Compare to now I can hit 115 and I’m barely 5’8. It just comes to show that technology helped make tennis easier now.
