In this video I take a look at 5 pieces of bad basketball advice you have probably heard throughout your life, and explain how you should think differently about the game. It is easy to get wrapped up in traditional beliefs about the game, but I want you to think outside the box when it comes to your basketball journey.
Let me know in the comments if you agree with these takes, or if I am completely missing the point.

  • I made AAU not that long ago, and the change of pace and skill from my school’s team to this was and still is such a crazy transition for me, I came from being the best on my team to the worse on this team, I’ve been grinding out and asking my coach for help and your videos have helped me so much with my mindset and basketball IQ.

  • When players are too passive, they usually aren't told about it. Other players on the team don't want that kid to take away their shots. Not being aggressive on offense doesn't stand out to a coach like a turnover or defensive mistake, so they might not even realize it. But at the end of the day, the players who are being aggressive and making players will get noticed by coaches the most.

  • The problem with this selfish/unselfish talk is that it's not always the best players with the ball. We have kids trying to shoot against 4 defenders while the rest of the team stand wide open. That is when I tell my kids to not be selfish. Not when they are aggresive and putting pressure on defenses. Even then, if they are driving into a wall of people and there's an open player right next to them ready to shoot, I expect them to make the pass rather than try to hit a layup into 3 defenders. The aggressiveness was good, then they just need to stop being selfish and let the team score. Often time with kids the selfishness causes them not to be succesful which in turn plays with their motivation to play. I want the kids to learn to make the correct play, which will also lead into team success, thus making basketball more fun for everyone. If one player is always the one handling the ball, the other players don't have an opportunity to develop. Aggressiveness is a good thing, selfishness is not.

    @steezymtb5876@steezymtb5876Ай бұрын
    • Yes I agree, my whole point is that sometimes telling kids to not be selfish can make them think that being aggressive is selfish. That is why I try and separate the two things, just like you are talking about. Appreciate the comment!

      @TuckerRichardson@TuckerRichardsonАй бұрын

    @andyfam3221@andyfam3221Ай бұрын
    • 100%. Obviously, if you are consistently not making shots, that should be a sign you need to improve your shooting. But overall, if you have a good shot, the worst thing you can do is stop shooting after a few misses!

  • Do you have any tips on finding/ creating the best workout routines for basketball training. I’ve always been confused on finding great dribble workouts, etc.

    @Alan-uj6jv@Alan-uj6jv5 күн бұрын
  • The advice to not think is still valid in regards to skill performance. If you have to think about shot mechanics while shooting, it is going to mess up your shot. You have to get the individual skills down so that you don't have to think about them and you can think about things like what the defense is giving you, or how to stop their main option.

    @ClayHales@ClayHalesАй бұрын
    • 100%, my point is that you should think when it comes to situations that happen during a game. Like you say, most of the time you need the skills to make the split second decisions that are also necessary over the course of a game. So I definitely agree with you.

  • Good vid tuck, as always How do you handle the disappointment of losing? I personally feel we shouldve won the league but we only had 6 players in the final and 2 fouled out, so we got run off our feet in the last quarter and lost, as well as me feeling that my personal ability was underrated as i felt i was a top 3 player in the league but i wasnt considered for best and fairest or runner up (my younger brother who im much better than but shorter than got runner up), so im struggling a bit with it at the moment

    @young_man_and_the_brick@young_man_and_the_brickАй бұрын
    • The fact that you care about losing is a good sign, because competitiveness is key to having a long career. However, after big losses I always try and tell myself 2 things. 1, you learn more about yourself when you lose/fail than when you win. And 2, It is about the process of getting better, not about the result of a game or a performance. Keep this in mind, but also keep striving to impact winning as much as you can!

      @TuckerRichardson@TuckerRichardsonАй бұрын
  • @tucker Tucker I agree a lot with what you covered here. I think watching you in high school you were outstanding but in fact you could have been more aggressive on the offensive end. The fact is your team achieved a level of success it never had in a long time and you were a major part of that but you could have taken more shots and your team would have benefited from that. What is funny is your sister who was a good player was the same way. I talked to your Mom about that a lot. I also agree with the don't be fancy analysis you made. In fact coaches do say that and it is a mistake. I have no problem a coach saying use that move in a different situation but not keep it simple that is not how you play basketball. Against a high level of competition you especially need your full arsenal. Your point on the transfer portal is well taken, The fact is Tucker if things don't go well on a job are you gonna look for a new one every time - of course the answer is No. The portal has a purpose and you covered it well but right now its being totally misused. These are great videos and I hope your doing well,

  • Tuck, could you make a video about like scoring and stuff, cause I feel me and probably others feel like they need to average 15+ ppg to be a player at the next level. I think I could work on being aggressive obviously. But like some tips to stop worrying about scoring and more about just how to make a impact. You don’t need to make the video, it would just help.

    @caleb9696@caleb9696Ай бұрын

    @gladepittenger9395@gladepittenger9395Ай бұрын
    • 100%, not about being a 1 man show. It is just about being aggressive within your role. For instance, if you are a really good shooter, you need to shoot the ball every time you are open. If you are great at getting into the lane and creating for others, you need to be aggressive in that role too. Otherwise you are lessening your impact on the team.
