I felt obligated to make this video after the recent developments of Eren Jeager and his incredible character arc in Attack on Titan. Like many, I initially had no interest in his character for the first half of the series, but he's recently propelled into one of, if not the most, interesting and morally questionable characters in the series.
Inspired by the brilliant character breakdown from u/kemorsky on reddit, please check his post out: / manga_spoilers_charact...

**fans analyzing eren** Isayama : lmao no
We are clowns lol
Disagree. Yes it has it’s flaws and issues but I think that the point the ending is supposed to be disappointing. I think Isayama wanted the ending to confound us and leave us saying “what the hell?!?” This show has always been a commentary and allegory for the flaws of humanity and it’s nature. Ultimately I think it stays true to the theme by showing that no matter what we do true freedom is simply unattainable. I don’t think Eren being a clueless slave to fate was outta nowhere. Call me a arrogant smartass but I think it was pretty clear that Eren was a unwilling slave to fate since the time travel reveal. Even his founding design is a hint at this, he’s literally being strung up and hanged by strings does that look free to you? Not to mention I there’s a pretty reasonable explanation for Eren’s behavior and that he developed multiple personality disorder or a extreme fictional version of bipolar disorder. This hypothesis is not without basis either, Eren was shown to have always been screwed up in the head since childhood he killed two men without remorse so likely a form of anti-social personality disorder. Couple that with repeated trauma and excessive stress in his adolescence it was only a matter of time before his mental state snapped. I guess ultimately it’s like Kenny Ackerman once said “everyone’s a slave to something”. I think that’s the point the ending wasn’t supposed to be satisfying. Eren was always a flawed character I think the fault was with us, we idolize and got attached to Eren when we shouldn’t of. Isayama wrote Eren not as a noble character but one driven by his wrath, rage, fear and obsession. Look I’m not to happy with the ending, I originally hated it as well and even went as far as to rant about it online but I think at the end of the day the end is the end I think we should move on. A far better use of our time and energy would be to analyze this story and it’s themes

Carla: He's too cute
Carla said "He's special for only being born into this world.", and she wasn't wrong.
So in turn, he’s not special because he is.
@@C3CC10 More like, anyone could have been given what he had. Think of walking up to a group of kids and handing one kid a large bag of candies. Others will see that kid stands out because he is the only one holding candy, but that bag could have been given to anyone else. Eren in my opinion was thrusted into this complex plot in the world by his father, an outlier instead of an inevitably. He obtained the attack and founding Titans from Grisha thanks to a strange time loop deal involving its special ability, but who's to say that someone else couldn't have received it, or done a much better job using it than him. Eren is not a holder of the founder's bloodline or a super soldier Ackerman, just a boy given a set of tools and told to "work". Like Spider-Man, the origin and set of circumstances all comes down to luck and possibility, that's just how it happened. Eren was a normal boy formed by his cruel world, and I love it. The author found such a good way to make him special through growth and not birth.
D Ru this. This comment wins.
I'm kinda annoyed when people say isayama's writing is trash because they think they are intellects, but really just want a cliche anime.
They are the small brain
they too smooth brain
I'm not even exaggerating when I say isayama is a genius. Like holy shit this anime is masterpiece and a half. Like this show should literally be taught instead of Shakespeare. Why not teach this stuff instead of Shakespeare? The character studies that can be down is insane
I completely agree. In reality... cliche endings don't exist. Isayama really takes AOT and gives us something that's far more realistic. Cliches only bring about emotions from the audience, but these emotions are forced. AOT is so different... because of its uncertainties and its cruelty... it brings our true, raw emotions from its audience. Life doesn't always go according to what we want, and AOT really embodies that truth. I want the Eldians to live. I want the Survey Corps to all live, but if it ends differently, I wouldn't oppose it. It's reality. If they live, so be it. If they die, so be it because it just is.
They are ppl who love the most mediocre animes. Just look after on MAL...
Even as a loud idiot in the first two seasons I still loved Eren. It was something about his conviction and fearlessness that resonated with me. he has been my favourite since season 1 episode 1 since he was a 12-15 year old CHILD (may I remind you he's a fucking traumatised child, people should cut him some slack), I emphathised and understood exactly why he acted the way he did and why his 'angry kid' resolve didn't break until he was faced with some really shitty and traumatisinglife events. Then in s3, after he started to witness memories of his father because of the attack titan, he became so mentally drained like he was still as 15 year old kid when these horrible, gory memories of reality came and knocked him full force, making him question eveything he believed in and what he knew about the world... and he bared that burden alone, not telling anyone because he cared for his friends' safety (such as Historia)... idk maybe he could be a bit of a brat at first but that came from an intentioanlly good place. Many people are unempathetic who watches AOT and they have the intelligence of a spoon to not understand Eren.

@@ervinsmisu1066 It's mainly because it recontextualizes a lot of past events and the meaning some had grown attached to within Eren's character (not necessarily his goals but his development or mentality). It portrays Eren in a completely different well rendering much of his words empty or confusing as new context was added. It is essentially a betrayal to those who became invested in his character(those who saw him in that way), especially after seeing this video, as this video almost served as a birthing point to many liking Eren's character. It seems almost as if the points made in this video do not apply anymore or the in other video, hence probably why Soul said "lol".
@@ervinsmisu1066 adding onto what Dylan said,, it abandons the shows themes and has an open ended ending which felt unsatisfactory and awkward, almost like it was trying to lead up to a sequel or something. it turned ymir fritz into a villain last minute which was unexpected from a show that had such a focus on moral ambiguity,, they also strip her of her themes of freedom by making her character be driven by her love for king fritz, who literally enslaved her, abused her, raped her, cut out her tongue, and fed her to the children he forced her to have,, instead of having her character symbolize a complete lack of freedom by her inability to have any free will of her own, submitting to any orders she's given. it throws in a love story between eren and mikasa out of nowhere, which was wholesome and everything but kind of made no sense,,, they excuse it by saying that eren was a dick on purpose to make armin and her hate him,, but still leaves no explanation for season 1-3 eren being a jealous asshole who constantly ignored mikasa and everything she did for him. the ending felt to me like eremika fan service or like a fanon ending someone wrote to make themselves feel better about the real ending. and on top of that a lot of the chapter just made no fucking sense and was confusing, it hasn't been officially translated yet though so i'm not blaming isayama or holding it against the story quite yet. i liked a lot of things about the end but ultimately it felt off i guess,, it's like the whole story was leading up to a different end but was changed last second (which is probably true because isayama said he had a different ending in mind originally but changed it after the series got popular). i recomend reading up about the AnR ending and seeing how much more that would have made sense in the story. one of my favorite things about aot is the foreshadowing sprinkled throughout the show/manga and how it managed to be both obvious and subtle at the same time, making it apparent to the reader or watcher that isayama knew exactly where the story was going from the very beginning. one of the major moments that cemented aot as a complete masterpiece in my eyes and as my favorite story of all time was rewatching it and realizing how obvious it was that reiner annie and bertholdt were titan shifters, or how ymir's backstory shows civilization outside of the walls, or ymir fritz in the story books that were read to historia as a child, and so much more hints left in plain sight that could have spoiled the entire show for me if i had just been looking for it,, but were still placed so well that i had no clue. in comparison, the end of aot and the changes in erens character especially create so many continuity errors and contradictions to previous aspects of the story,, anytime i try to think back on the show and on eren as a character in perspective of chapter 139 (in aot as a whole but especially season 4)i have to hurt my brain trying to justify it and why it makes sense. again i don't blame you for liking the ending at all, and i don't blame isayama for me being unsatisfied with it either,, aot is a super popular story that everyone enjoys for different reasons, and i don't think there was any way he or anybody could have written an ending that pleased everyone,, at the end of the day i still think it's a beautiful story and i'm really glad that you enjoyed it's ending! i just wanted to offer some perspective and i would love to hear the things you liked about it! i hope this helps

From a naive kid, to a war hero, to an elite soldier, to a war criminal, to a monster.
To hero again
I mean he only wants to genocide Marley for the "peace" of Eldia
Not monster. He does whatever it takes so his people survive. In the beginning, its all about the worlds mistake. Why want to wage war against people of paradis? They are already living like hell. Not knowing about outside world, but because of marley greed they break the peace of paradis. They waging war because they are afraid of the fruit they bear. Eren jeager. I mean if the world not agree with marley to war against paradis this wont happen.
I think the point of the manga is to show us, that you shouldn't discriminate people because of their past mistakes and that if you do, you leave them no other choice than to fight... the reason they are "evil" is, that you forced them to be evil. The King of Eldia just wanted to live in peace on an island where he can't harm anyone but the rest of the world still hated Eldians, were afraid of them and ultimately wanted them all to die. So many people died, the Eldians couldn't live in peace and even after 2000 years the rest of the world couldn't forgive and that showed Eren, that there is no other choice. It's either them or the Eldians and he made his decision, because for him the only people that matter are his friends. The point of this story isn't to think in black or white or good or evil. The point is, that humanity will always fight, always discriminate people they are afraid of and that both sides are at fault of it and that humanity needs to forgive and to stop discriminating people to the point where violence is the only way out of it. Thats my take on it at least.
@@sourcandy6469 THIS!! the aot world is really complicated and not many people understand this. this is all about trials and perspectives and no one in aot isn't relatively a good or bad person because even since the beginning many were sacrificed and died brutally fighting for a chance to live or die trying. it's sad but aot also shows that communication is really important and especially in today's world because without it many misunderstandings can cause situations to worsen.

@@orangenade3707 if that’s what you firmly believe than good on you but if you wanna debate than sure read up, throwing insults ain’t gonna do anything. Here’s part one of my most recent take on the ending. Yes the ending has it’s flaws and issues but I think that’s the point the ending is supposed to be conflicting. I think in a odd sense it’s flaws are what make the ending fitting for Aot. This show has always been a commentary and allegory for the flaws of humanity and it’s nature. Ultimately I think it stays true to the theme by showing that no matter what we do true freedom is simply unattainable. I don’t think Eren being a clueless slave to fate was outta nowhere. Call me arrogant but I think it was pretty obvious that Eren was a unwilling slave to fate since the time travel reveal. Even his founding titan design is a hint at this, he’s literally being strung up and hanged by strings like a puppet does that look free to you? (It’s also a reference to the Norse god Odin when he hanged himself on a tree and sacrificed a eye for enlightenment. Aot has a lot of Norse symbolism) Not to mention I believe there’s a possible explanation for Eren’s behavior and that’s that he developed some extreme fiction version of multiple personality disorder disorder to cope with the atrocities he’s committed. This hypothesis is not without basis either. Because of Paths Eren experience time all at once past, present and future thus splintering his psyche. He was shown to have always been screwed up in the head since childhood he killed two men without remorse so likely a form of anti-social personality disorder. Couple that with repeated trauma and excessive stress in his adolescence it was only a matter of time before his mental state snapped. I guess ultimately it’s like Kenny Ackerman once said “everyone’s a slave to something”. I think that’s the point the ending wasn’t supposed to be satisfying, the cycle of violence wasn’t broken and history will only repeat itself. I don’t even think Eren could’ve succeeded in completing the rumbling. As far as I can piece together from the little explanation and exposition we got it looks like time travel in Aot works fairly deterministically. (Eren says time in path exists all at once and we saw Eren try to deny his visions by testing the accuracy of them) That’s the tragedy of Eren Yeager, he wanted freedom and free will but you can’t exactly have that when you know what’s gonna happen anyways. Ironically in his pursuit of freedom Eren lost his free will and individuality. Eren even denied this fact and kept trying to convince himself he was free but the moment Sasha died that was the breaking point. Eren asking Mikasa what she was to him and her answer really wasn’t that important it’s the implications of her answer. Eren didn’t start the rumbling cause he was “friend zoned” it was cause if Mikasa had answered differently it would’ve meant Eren’s visions of the future are just possibilities but since she answered exactly as he saw that proved to him he really was trapped and that he had no freedom. Even the fact that Eren could only kill 80% of the world is more proof of this. If he could’ve just killed a few more people that’d be enough to prove to himself he really was free but alas he couldn’t even do that. Eren ultimately trapped himself in a self induced time loop, in the end Eren lost and determinism and fate won. Eren was always a flawed character I think the fault was with us, we idolize and got attached to Eren when we shouldn’t of. Isayama wrote Eren not as a noble character but one driven by his wrath, rage, fear and obsession. Aot was never a story about freedom and ideology it was always a story of humanity in all it’s beauty and complexity yet also how twisted, immoral and corrupt it can be. Look point is it’s a conflicting ending I’m still processing me thoughts and thinking about the ending a month later. I originally hated the ending and even went as far as to rant about it online, but thinking back it actually had a lot of depth. This was a controversial ending but love or hate it I think at the end of the day the end is the end and it’s about time we all made our peace with it. Just my two cents
@@orangenade3707 I honestly think that chapter was pretty good in concept just not in execution. I think a good deal of the problem was just bad dialogue and even than it isn’t Isayama fault. Japanese fans are saying that even the official translation was botched so we have the publishers to blame for the awkward dialogue. Anyways here’s part two of my analysis: The dialogue was certainly on the nose but I think that they aren’t supposed to be taken at face value. Eren’s line about not knowing why he started the rumbling wasn’t really the reason he started the rumbling but more so how he feels about it. It was already established in chapter 131 that Eren wanted the rumbling and to wipe everything away but was remorseful for the way he felt especially once he realized the costs. It can even be argued he’s in a sort of disbelief at his actions, it’s also the reason Eren was a child shown as a child in the paths a important thematic detail many seem to forget. The atrocities he committed took such a toll he reverted to a child like state back when Eren had a very one dimensional world view of the enemies being evil just to prove to himself what he was doing was right justified, but deep down Eren knew how rotten and selfish his actions were but he refused to accept that. I also think that Armin thanking Eren had far more depth to it but was just badly worded. I doubt Armin actually agreed with Eren’s actions but it was more so to comfort or sympathize with Eren in his dying moments, remember this is the last interaction between the two before Eren’s death. In the Japanese version apparently Armin’s line went something closer to “thank you for bearing the burdens you had to we won’t let the opportunity go to waste” see how much better that is? I think it’d be even better if it’d simply been changed to “I’m sorry you had to do this, I’m sorry you were pushed to bear this burden”. It would’ve accomplished the same thing without being misinterpreted as Armin suddenly agreeing with Eren while simultaneously being a lot less on the nose. I honestly think that Armin is one of the most important characters in Aot possibly even more so than even Mikasa not necessarily cause of his achievements but what he represents. The only thing Eren ever truly did out of his own free will is befriend Armin. Now ever since time travel was introduced the range of possibilities and what paths Eren influenced was almost endless however even if paths Eren setup child Eren to meet Armin, Eren would’ve still had to been the one to make the choice to befriend Armin. Ultimately with what little free will Eren ever had the one choice that was truly bone without any possible influence was to befriend Armin so by freeing Armin he is by extension freeing himself as Armin could arguably be the literal and metaphorical symbol of Eren’s freedom

I’m gonna say it. Eren has completely, and effectively taken Erwin’s role. He’s abandoned his humanity like Erwin had so long ago. THANK YOU! You deserve a cookie, my man! But those who translated the name *Shingeki no Kyojin* to *Attack on Titan* are also to blame. The idea of *Shingeki no Kyojin* being only about figthing titans is a consquence of its english name, because *Attack on Titan* really instills a figthing vibe and nothing more, when that's utterly wrong. *Shingeki no Kyojin* actually translates to *The Attacking Titan* or *The Advancing Titan* in the english language. Both of those names are definitely more enigmatic and instill a mystery vibe to Isayama's work, right? Right. *Shingeki no Kyojin* stopped being about attacking the titans the moment Eren (The Attacking Titan) showed up and punched a titan's jaw off. All of the *black* and *white* feel of *we know who our enemies are* disappeared the moment *The Attacking Titan* appeared, thus becoming more and more greyer as the story progressed. The name *Attack on Titan* really hands out a wrong feeling to all of us reading/watching such a masterpiece as *Shingeki no Kyojin.* Therefore, when *Shingeki no Kyojin* stopped being about attacking the titans (specially during the Uprising Arc) people quit/got upset, which would have not happened if the english name was bloody correct.

Eren's enemy has always been himself. He did all of it. His future self pushed his father to fight and he killed his mother too by leading dina titan into the hole. The moment he knew it all was from the contact with historia, at that moment he knew that everything was inevitable. He knew that Zeke would lead him to the path where he could changeeverything. He knew that he had to fight for mikasa to kill him which is the greatest villain in the world. He knew it all and fought in order for armin to be the hero that killed eren Yeager. Eren Yeager was never free from himself, he knew that there was no other path for him, and even if there was, he wouldn't have chosen it. Eren was never fighting for his freedom, he fought for his friends' freedom. I guess the only question left is if he was successful in granting them that freedom.

@Harry Drake Isn't it true that our true emotions are brought out only when we are faced with death? Is it strange that a 19 year old, faced with death and the idea that he cannot spend his life with the person he loves and his companions, is sad? Would the fact that he confided in his lifelong friend, saying his final goodbye before he died, be wrong? The beauty of Eren's character and what makes him unique, is precisely his fragility, the fact that even though he has the powers of a god, he is still a man with his weaknesses and earthly emotions. Judging Eren's reaction as ugly or out of place is tantamount to denying our own humanity and that of his character, since it's the way all of us readers would have reacted if we were in his place, as humans. Eren's little moment of selfishness, that is, when he says that he would like Mikasa not to find any other man for at least 10 years, is not bad at all. Because right after that Eren asks Armin to never reveal his true thoughts to Mikasa, so that she can live a happy life, without regrets, and also, in chapter 138 Eren asked Mikasa in a dream to forget him. In the end he took off the mask he had taken on and his reaction is realistic, human, but most of all perfectly in character.
@@immentallyhandicapped2903 The motivations for Eren's actions we already understood many chapters before 139. He tells us that the founder's power, which gives him the ability to see past, present and future on the same line, cannot be logically contained by the mind of a single human, confusing him as to the origin of his strong "desire" to want to destroy the world, which is why he says "I don't know why but I wanted to do it at any cost". He CLEARLY knows why he did it and what he wanted to achieve, but he can no longer give an explanation for that strong desire to want to make the rest of the world a blank canvas.
@@sooryan_1018 It wasn't Eren who directly killed his mother, that's a translation error. He clearly says that he "let her go", meaning that he let Ymir take the titan of Dyna to the Jaeger's house, so that in the young Eren could be established his deep hatred towards the titans that will lead him to make precise choices in the future. Eren simply didn't prevent this from happening, as he knew this was the only way. So your sentence makes no sense.
To add on on Erens mental health let's not forget that it is revealed that in season 3 he not only received memories of grisha and kruger but also received future memories showing the truth behind the reiss family murder and showing that he is about commit a genocide never seen before in history
