I really enjoyed this performance. You drum with a cool rock style in this. I liked hearing that in this particular song. I liked that you did improvise because you changed things up where even excellent drummers do not; so it made for some pleasant surprises, like that classic rock descending tom-fill - that sounded really good in the song, as did the jungle tom interludes. It was fascinating how many of the crash parts were very similar (at the same exact points). This is a great idea and a way cool experiment. More vids like this and more vids of her, please.

This was far from the original, she doesn't have half the drums needed and that's not her fault but doesn't mean it is closer to the original. This was very different than the normal drum part, she was off beat on multiple occasions.

Yeah, I literally only had two places where I went "Not quite my tempo", once during the bridge and once during the outro (I think). The bridge is just hard to improv and she staggered a TINY bit later on, but she was amazing. Going from pop to Slipknot is a tough challenge.

Yep, her drum kit is structured under simpler approach, but nevertheless she managed to do a lot with it. Massive drum kits are amazing but without a good drummer nothig extraordinary happens. on the contrary, a good drummer does not deppend on the drum kit to deliver a good performance.

I think my favorite part of this was her switching from a very very tight and straight play style you'd find in more pop, to a full arms loose heavy hitting groovy play style to fit better. She felt the emotion the song was supposed to provide and changed her playing based off it. Crushed it!

A lot of musicians that play for aprox. Ten years do this, the thing is that certain musical skills are expected of certain musicians, like how drummers are expected to come up with something that fits quickly or how pianists are expected to be able to sight-read easily and intuitively

The thing is top-tier drummers are required to do this process for songs. Then they "rehearse deeply" the parts they came up with and perform them as best they can every night. It's easy as drummers to get carried away and play something on the top of their heads but for stability's sake in the performances they keep it grounded especially for complex music if not confusion can happen and you don't want to mess up a song for that. So you are right, but don't demerit top-tier drummers who do this process all the time behind the scenes

I think this series shows the best parts of being 'fluent in the language of music'. They never heard the song before, it is not their preferred genre - but then they played the breakdown section in a way I prefer over the actual recording, with that marching snare build-up. It is brilliant!

I really enjoyed this performance. You drum with a cool rock style in this. I liked hearing that in this particular song. I liked that you did improvise because you changed things up where even excellent drummers do not; so it made for some pleasant surprises, like that classic rock descending tom-fill - that sounded really good in the song, as did the jungle tom interludes. It was fascinating how many of the crash parts were very similar (at the same exact points). This is a great idea and a way cool experiment. More vids like this and more vids of her, please.

Unbelievable. Her second playthrough, never having heard the full song, absolutely crushes it. Hits all the major fills, tracks all the time changes, even the half time at the bridge, and adds in some honestly incredible spice herself. Wild. Truly humbling.

Yeah, I literally only had two places where I went "Not quite my tempo", once during the bridge and once during the outro (I think). The bridge is just hard to improv and she staggered a TINY bit later on, but she was amazing. Going from pop to Slipknot is a tough challenge.

Yep, her drum kit is structured under simpler approach, but nevertheless she managed to do a lot with it. Massive drum kits are amazing but without a good drummer nothig extraordinary happens. on the contrary, a good drummer does not deppend on the drum kit to deliver a good performance.
At the very beginning, like as soon as she first hears the song, she did say "you're gonna need to install double right?" So she pretty much knew right away.
This is ridiculous. She's better at improvising than I am at air drumming and pretending that my hands and feet are making the right sounds. Nicely done.

The final take is great. I like how her kit is pretty restrained- one rack tom, one bass drum. I think the original is recorded on a 10-piece kit? She squeeze so much out of the roll at 7:50 , just by using accents and ghosts.
Yeah, that hint of break beat plus her speed and energy changed everything! In parts I was reminded of Pitchshifter with D.J. Walters as their drummer.

Joey is not an easy drummer to imitate. The assignment was almost unfairly difficult, but she kinda killed it.
That's the whole point of the series - to give drummers stuff they are not familiar with and give their own take on the songs, not to imitate the drum parts 1:1. I wish Joey was alive and hear this
She wasn't imitating because she didn't hear the drum track (It's not exactly clear in this video compared to newer ones) But at the end she hears it with drums at the end.

It's just nice to see her have fun. Wish she wouldn't have put herself down like this because she did really well and I think having fun making music is the most important thing anyway
I think my favorite part of this was her switching from a very very tight and straight play style you'd find in more pop, to a full arms loose heavy hitting groovy play style to fit better. She felt the emotion the song was supposed to provide and changed her playing based off it. Crushed it!

What a humble and capable female drummer. She has such a great personality and for just hearing the song for the first time without the drums she did a great job. 👏 👍
I've watched a bunch of these videos and she gets closer than anyone I've seen. She has a very natural sense for rhythm and song composition that's amazing.
As a fan of the original, I love the way she transitions from "I have no clue what I'm doing here" to "Let's f*cking goooooo!" I love her rendition of the drum track.
I saw these definite physical expressions on her face, in chronological order: "Aw crap this isn't it, the fans are gonna be pissed" "I am glad I wore a hair tie today" "OK, girl, just go. Go!!!" "Aw **** the sweat is burning my eyes. Doesn't matter, USE IT! DRUM! DRUUUMMMMMMMM!!!"
Joey will be proud. She was too close to the original with a Drumless track that is almost scary. And the fact that she had just one pedal, and the energy she put on was amazing.

Joey was a world class, amazing drummer. She's sitting there with pretty much a basic kit and managed to do a fantastic job. You could tell she could really feel it, even if her spin on it was different. This was awesome.
You could see the exact moment she started to feel it and just laid into it with confidence.

This is so much cooler to me than top-tier drummers playing deeply rehearsed material: drummers learning in real time. This to me demonstrates so much more about the skills that make professional drummers who they are
A lot of musicians that play for aprox. Ten years do this, the thing is that certain musical skills are expected of certain musicians, like how drummers are expected to come up with something that fits quickly or how pianists are expected to be able to sight-read easily and intuitively
The thing is top-tier drummers are required to do this process for songs. Then they "rehearse deeply" the parts they came up with and perform them as best they can every night. It's easy as drummers to get carried away and play something on the top of their heads but for stability's sake in the performances they keep it grounded especially for complex music if not confusion can happen and you don't want to mess up a song for that. So you are right, but don't demerit top-tier drummers who do this process all the time behind the scenes
It really is incredible to see it in real time. There was another drummer on here, a black dude who figured out (IIRC) “Enter Sandman” and pretty much immediately nailed it. It was suuuuper cool to watch!

For never having heard it before and being entirely different from what she normally plays, she did an excellent job. It's fantastic seeing people hear metal, listen with an open mind and allo themselves to enjoy the raw energy of it.
I think this series shows the best parts of being 'fluent in the language of music'. They never heard the song before, it is not their preferred genre - but then they played the breakdown section in a way I prefer over the actual recording, with that marching snare build-up. It is brilliant!
Not sure if I can believe that the first go was stumbly and the second go was so damn good, but... overall she did a great job.
