      @techcodenet@techcodenetАй бұрын
    • @@techcodenet yeah, well, that's most other countries too. The general public just drinks whatever affordable beer happens to not taste completely bad. That's normal, I wouldn't blame the Dutch for that. ;) For me, I just don't drink light beers anymore. I prefer the rich taste of stouts, the brown to black colour, the thick, almost oily consistence, the complex taste, the aftertaste, the aroma. Sure, there's also a lot of alcohol in them, sometimes 15%, but let's say Solaris or Risfactor (both Russian Imperial Stouts made in Polish microbreweries) are so rich in taste that you don't even get to taste the alcohol, while some cheaper beers with that high alcohol content will reek of that "spirit mixed with beer" taste. I mean, I tried different Belgian Dubbels and Trippels, Trappist and so on. Eh, they just don't taste good. Not to me anyway. They're comparable with average, some with above average Polish beer of similar type, but that's just not good enough for me. I need me some stouts, some porters. Guiness is about the lowest I can go. Still too watery, but I can suffer through it if there's nothing else. :P

  • Belgian here. Love your enthusiasm. Two remarks: please please pour the beers in their proprietary glasses, or at least glasses with a “foot”. If you can’t find them, the large Ikea wine glasses work fine. Just not in that barrel that you’re using there. These heavy beers are not brewed to be chugged away, they are to be sipped and enjoyed slowly. You’ll have a lot less foam (don’t let it “cluck” when you pour, take your time), which you shouldn’t drink by the way. Secondly: Leffe is considered the Walmart of stronger beers over here. It is made industrially and made to please the most people possible. The label says 1366 or something, but they just licensed the name of some random abbey to claim the beer is 800 years old. It’s not, it’s fake and made by the same company that owns/makes Bud. But anyway, love your interest in our beers. We’re a small country but we’re pretty good in a few things: beer, fries, chocolate and guns. Best not use those on the same day. Schol!

  • As a belgian guy it was really fun to see you trying belgian beer. We basically have these in every bar, for us it seems casual. Usually we drink this kind of beer in a round glass, that way you have the perfect amount of foam. But hey, a long as you enjoy it, you're good ! La Chouffe is one of my favorite, and most people here will agree. When it comes to Leffe, I highly recommend you looking up the real stoy behind it. When they say "since 1240" they are not really honnest. She said all the names the right way, by the way. In Belium you would say " santé", at least in the french speaking part. The best beers in beligum are the ones made in small breweries, but I guess it's hard to find internationnaly. I really enjoyed the video, thank you !

  • I was born and raised in Ghent, Belgium. Nice to see how someone is blown away the first time they taste Belgian beer. I am a local guide in the city. We offer tasting tours where we also talk about our rich history. Because as you could see on the Leffe bottle, it goes much further than the origins of your country. That is an abbey that you see on the bottle, so not just any company. Religion is also connected to this. For example, you could also make an episode about Belgian abbey beer. The best known is Westvleteren, which has been awarded the best beer in the world several times.

  • My notes as a Belgian: - Do not pour great Belgian beers in such a bucket you call a glass ever again! Every Belgian beer has it's own glass which (so it's said) brings out its flavour and smell better. But you'll be fine with just a decent special beer glass for most of them ;) - You'll get the hang of pouring beers in a good glass after a few tries. - It's indeed Duvel ('Devil' in Flemish accent). Which is like the standard heavy beer if you're not feeling creative. That said, it will knock you out if you're not counting :D - 8% is heavy beer, but it's normal heavy Belgian beer. We have beers of 12% etc. - Please don't taste the foam :p - I don't think Leffe is that special in Belgium. I'm guessing it's a popular beer outside of Belgium because of it's reasonable alcohol level. - Got to repeat, don't ever pour a Belgian special beer like that again :D - Duvel and Leffe are Flemish. We would say 'schol!' - If you want to go deeper into special beers, look for Trappist beers. Those are beers brewed by monks and are generally considered to be with the best beers out there. - Also, you drank three blond beers which are quite accesible. We have all kind of colours. Dark beers we would joke are basically a meal because they are so heavy :D - Putting dark beers and trappist together, I have to recommend Chimay Blue. Which is, umh, something else! Edit: more smileys because people seem to think I'm genuinely hating for the glass :D

I am all for educationing people, beer is not a subject I teach save that Belgian beer is likely the best in the world. A good critique points out errors and how to correct them. I was a bit surpriced though, that you didn't point out that he erred on the side of cold, when tasting the beers. But I am not a beer expert, so I don't know how much of a disservice he did the beers by serving them so cold.

  • Ah! Strong Belgian beers... I assume you've not come across Trappist beers? Only 10 breweries are officially allowed to brew these beers - and they are all monasteries. So the beer must be brewed within the walls of a Trappist monastery, either by the monks themselves or under their supervision. And yes, it's strong. Trappistes Rochefort, for example, is 11.3%. I remember (many years ago) securing a contract job in Brussels and forging out on the first night with a friend. It was cold, windy and tipping with rain. But after three of these things, I didn't notice the weather at all!

  • 🎉 only 1,500 Belgian beers left for you to taste (each in its unique glass). FYI: we say "santé" in French and "gezond(heid)" in Flemish (meaning "to your health") for "cheers" then knock glasses so they spill on each other ( it used to be how to make sure we drink the same stuff and are not trying to poison our guests). And FYI2: Leffe is considered an "easy/tourist" beer in Belgium, as it's good but not as refined and complicated as other blonde beers. Anyway, thanks for the video and of you need a beer guide when you come in Belgium, I'd be happy to host you guys for the night (and late breakfast, because beer ^^)

  • In Belgium we have a specific type of glass for each of our beers and we (try to) stick to it (almost religiously). Not having access to the specific glass is somewhat expected in a foreign country but the pour is something to keep in mind. Especially with Duvel (which means devil in Flemish) you'd want to keep the glass almost horizontal when pouring and gradually shifting to a vertical position to get a good pour, ideally you'd have a glass that's filled with the entire content of the bottle and a collar of foam.

  • Duvel is the beer that gets you on your ass without noticing. It's the perfect summer night with a bbq beer. La Chouffe is my favorite to drink on an average day when sitting around with friends. Leffe isn't my favorite, but the dark Leffe I use for cooking stew. There's a reason why our beers are considerd UNESCO world heritage. Germans and Czechs perfected a few types of beers, Belgians (and today American craft beers) threw the kitchen sink at it and ended up with wacky combinations that filtered through time to the point where you can't really go wrong. There's a special type of beer that goes from sweet to sour and are considered the ones that people who don't really like beer should try. They're Geuze, Kriek and Framboise. Some sour, some almost like lemonade.

While he should have an old geuze, kriek or lambiek, those with champagne like corks. But those are even not that common over here in Belgium. If they have those old style kriek, geuze and/or lambiek, you know you are at a good place! Even better if they have vintage bottles, but that's on another level.

We spent the rest of the week relaxing by sitting outside pavement cafés enjoying the sunshine, eating fine food and sampling fantastic Belgum beers, One thing I remember with Duvel is after a few my legs would stop working, other than that I felt fine!! • Another Belgian here, and it's so cool to see how you perceive Belgian beer. Obviously it's hard to choose, as there are some 1500 different beers here, lol. But yeah, Duvel and Leffe are among the best. But there's several other really good ones. Trappist Westvleteren 12 contains 10,2% alcohol and often referred to as the best beer in the world. Kriek is a sweet beer with cherry taste. And there's plenty of other special ones, such as Geuze, Hoegaarden, Kwak. While some foam is good and required, it is painful to see the amount in your jug. And I say jug, because we are very particular about our beers, which need to be served in the correct glasses 😉 But I can imagine that if it's hard to find the beers, it's going to be even harder to find the correct glasses over there. Anyway, glad you enjoyed it, and it would be nice to see another part with some of the ones I mentioned. Cheers! Or schol as we say here 😁🍺🍻

  • A number of people have made a big deal about the glass(es) IWrocker used. When we visited Belgium we were very impressed by Belgian beers and that the bars had a specific glass for every beer. Not brewery, beer. A different glass for each Duvel beer, etc. When we got back to the USA we were at a beer tasting at the Meddlesome Moth in Dallas hosted by one of the founders of La Choufe. He gave us glasses as souvenirs of the tasting. He said something like (it's been over 10 years, so I may not have the wording quite right), "People ask why we selected these glasses. Was it the shape? Was it the size, the glass, the lip? No, not so much. When we started the brewery we were very low on money and these were the cheapest glasses we could find." Boston Brewing asked some graduate students at MIT to design the perfect beer glass for them. Every week, a fresh keg of Sam Adams Lager was delivered to the students for their research. I suspect that this may have slowed the progress of the research. At some point, Boston Brewing stopped the project and began selling whatever the students had developed at that point. I am less concerned with the glass he used, though he could have used a better one, as the way he poured the beer and the serving temperature of the beer. American mass market beers are typically served just above their freezing point so you won't taste them. You can't taste much at those temperatures. Europeans tend to drink their beers at "cellar temperature" which Americans call "warm" but is actually around 55F. The beers are brewed to be best at that temperature, while American mass market beers at that temperature are less than pleasant. It is a shame IWrocker didn't get to really taste the wonderful Belgian beers.

    @sourdoughhome2571@sourdoughhome2571Ай бұрын
    • ....completly agree with your explanation about the temperature ..just above freezing point is really too cold, especially for the heavier beers (also for any lighter beers from 5/5.5°). If you drink these heavy (8.0/9.5°) beers too cold, you are certainly making concessions to the taste ..also, the alcohol effect will suddenly hit you more intensely afterwards (I think you could use a nap afterwards). A few of these heavy beers in a row will also affect your taste. You can discuss the shape of the glass ..but it is best to always be very clean. It is preferable not to put one beer in the same uncleaned glass as the previous beer. Hold your glass at an angle and then pour on that sloping side ...less foam itw. A lot of other Belgium beers to try! ..Omer, Karmeliet, Gruut, Kasteelbier, Chimay, Delirium Tremens, Verboden Vrucht, Mort Subite (brewery), Gouden Carolus (Het Anker - brewery)... ...also lighter ones, Vedett, Vedett IPA, Cornet, Palm, Kriek, Geuze, Hoegaarden (Celis?) ...and so much much more, too many to mention...

From different breweries in Belgium, the Netherlands, france, italy,... to breweries like, Ommegang, firestone walker and boulevard brewing i NY, CALI, and Kansas respectively. • Dutch beer lover here living close to the Belgium border. Love the classic Belgium beers. The one I like most is the Duvel Triple Hop. The label is identical but has the green hop bells accents. In the Netherlands craft beer is hugely popular and caused a explosion of small breweries everywhere. If you are looking for "abdijbier" (like Leffe) or even better "trappistenbier", then buy a La Trappe beer or a Zundert beer. Both are Trappist beers brewed by monks within the walls of their monastery. Really good and flavourful beers from the south of the Netherlands. Obviously there's also a ton of stouts and other beers available from the craft breweries 😊

  • Im german and live right to the belgian border. So in my teenage years i discovered belgian beers and tasted all they had to offer. They are a complete different world to the stuff we have in taste, texture, colour, alcohol volume and bottle shapes. My personal taste for beers developed and changed within the years and now that i am in my 40s im very choosy but when i was young i preferred the belgian brand "Grimbergen Optimo Bruno". It comes in this little stubby bottles like Duvel with 11 Alc Volume and it has a rich malty and sweet taste almost like a german maltbeer or murican rootbeer. Its devious because you dont taste the alcohol and after a few bottles it hits you when you start to walk.

  • You should pour the Duvel under a larger glass angle so it flows less turbulent. That way there's less foam. You should always strive for a foam layer of two fingers thick. Bar keepers systematically get this right whatever the beer by holding the glass under a larger or smaller angle while pouring and watching the foam level.

You also have for each beer in Belgium a specific glass, and some brands like Duvel put some limited editions out for the collectors. There's even a beer "kwak" with a special glass, and in a bar in Ghent you have to give your shoe as deposit. 😊

  • In Europe during the Middle Ages, beer was drunk with meals instead of water. The reason is trivial and it is because cities polluted rivers, so people drank beer with their meals to avoid getting sick. There is the world's oldest written document on the production of vodka on an industrial scale, written in Poland. It dates back to 1405

  • Tilt the glass more or less to control how much of a head you want Ian - the more horizontal the glass is the less foam there'll be - and pour a little bit slower, try not to let the flow 'glug', keep it as laminar as you can by always leaving an air-hole above the outflow - let air in as the beer comes out, no glugging, smooth laminar flow gives a smooth, consistent foam.

  • Get a smaller glass, get the foam down and youre there. Every beer has its specific glass. Bowl kind for Duvel, same for La Chouffe and a chalice for Leffe. For info, Stella is just a Pils, same as Jupiler, Maes, Cristal, Primus, Estaminet, etc. Duvel is translated to Devil, its kind of our step up from pils. La Chouffe is our heavier beer and Leffe is what I like to drink when Im having fries and a steak. Before we drink beers we say "schol" in Flanders. Ps I sent 12 beer to my buddy in GA. He is coming over next year on a tour of Europe and is going to try them all out :). He has some work cut out for him

  • Some tips... Try to find a similar shaped glass as the glass used for the original beer. A tulip shaped glass will be fine, it holds the aroma of the beer and gives you a enhanced experience. Poor it gently, especially the Duvel. Beers realy tastes much better when poored gently. (The smaller the bubbles in the foam, the better.) Perhaps next time look at some video´s of how to poor the beers. Also on the ideal temperature should be mentioned on the bottles. Cheers

  • As for the 1240 date. The company brewing Leffe is not that old, but the history of the beer really goes back to the those times. In medieval Europe many (or even most?) breweries were controlled by monks in Abbeys. it was a method for the clergy to raise some money for the Abbey. the abbey of Leffe was founded in 1152, and the brewery came under their control in 1240. Over the centuries it switched ownership many times. Nowadays most of these ancient brands are controlled by the large multinationals. (But not all, some are still original run by monks)

  • Love the enthousiasm, but I need to follow my colleagues below: loose the barrel glass and go for a large wine glass. And, when opening the bottle: hold it by the neck and not the bottom. It will refrain from warming the beer and would prevent foam escaping from the bottle (like what happened with Duvel), because the warmth of your hand will break up the bubbles a bit.

  • Haha! This was an excellent episode! My first wife is Belgian, and I was thoroughly educated in the culture and history of Belgian beer. They really know what they're doing, and they (quite rightly) take it just as seriously as the culture surrounding wine. In Belgium, each beer is served at the correct temperature, and in its' own specific glass, carefully designed to compliment the beer it contains. When choosing a beer, even the appropriate time of day, and the food it accompanies is often considered. One Belgian beer you really must try (actually, a range of beers) is by Chimay. I imagine they must be commonly available even in the States. Also, "kriek" beers - which are brewed with a particular type of cherry. It sounds a bit "novelty", but they've been brewing this type of beer for many years, and kriek is produced by a number of companies. (Your favourite, Leffe is pronounced, "Leff-er" in the North [Flemmish] - and in the South [French] it's pronounced "Leff"). Je pense que tu es un peu saoul, mon pote!

  • Nice to see this as a Belgian. You already had a ton of tips about pouring the beer into the (right!) glass. So I'm not gonna do that again. But one thing I haven't seen here in the comments is the following: a wet glass gives a really smooth foam. If the glass is dry, it's more difficult to get a nice foam collar. The "OU" in La Chouffe sounds like the "OO" in "book" For Leffe you have to pronounce the last "e" too. It kinda sounds like the short version of "EU" in "euhm". Hope this makes sense. 😅 Cheers can be: - proost - gezondheid - tsjing Depends on the region.

  • As a Belgian a always love to see people enjoying our beers. Especially when i see someone choosing the 3 one i used to drink. I'm gonna give you an advice, you better drink them in opposite order, this how i savour them the most. And when u serve the duvel, do it slowly and right on the glass with a high angle to avoid to have that much bubbles so they are kept inside the beer and make your beer even more tasty. Duvel should really be drink in last as it this much more dry and strong it will overtake the taste of next ones.

  • The citrus flavor is because of the aroma hops they use + koriander is a strong herb taste amplifier . When brewing beer , they use 2 kinds of hops : 1 regular hops boiling from the beginning , mostly for the anti oxidation , to help preserve the beer 2 aroma hops are more delicate and more flavour , and are used for the subtle taste , and are added to the last 3 minutes of boiling . Sometimes hops are added in the fermenting stage too to have a high hops taste ( for ex la chouffe extra houblon )
