  • Whoever said that the slaves didn't fight back doesn't know their history. They absolutely did, but lost due to being outgunned, outmanned, sabotaged, divided and then eventually mentality conditioned and regularly abused.

I worked with customers for a decade - and those two still stand out in my mind nearly two decades later. Also, even as an American I know to stay away from any moose.

Another teenager (in 1996) insisted to me that her uncle fought in the Civil War. I cannot totally blame the school system. I believe that the best learning should be done in the home. It does not have to be elaborate teaching, just make sure your children have a library card and correct information shared and encouraged by parents and family members.

  • My high school Chem teacher made chlorine gas trying to get adhesive off a desk... Me and a friend in class both quickly realized what was going on and grabbed baking soda and milk after rushing the students out and having other students knock on nearby classrooms explaining we needed to evacuate. When me and my friend returned to neutralize the mixture she was still scrubbing while coughing and nearly passed out multiple times. When investigated by other teachers, she had no clue you can't mix bleach and ammonia.

  • I am a now retired telecommunications worker in California. I thought I worked with a lot of fairly curious and educated people. My wife and I went to Africa a few times, specifically Tanzania, Kenya and Egypt for 6 or 7 weeks. All my coworkers thought we were out of our minds. They would ask, aren't you afraid, what are you going to do, do they have roads, are you going to stay in huts and stuff. Could you get eaten by wild animals? Oh, I could never do that, they'd say. That's scary. What language do they speak and how are you going to talk to them. They speak Swahili, English or Arabic, I'd say. I'm going to learn a few words and phrases to get by. We're not worried one bit. All I could do was shake my head and walk away. We had a wonderful time.

  • I will give you two stories. My daughter and her friend were sitting outside speaking Irish (I am Irish , from Ireland and live in Ireland) , and American lady who was sitting close asked them what language they were speaking to which my daughter answered that they were speaking Irish, to which the American Lady promptly said that they were not speaking Irish that they were in fact speaking Celtic which is the Scottish language and she would know because her Grandfather was from Ireland. She was speaking to two Irish people , in Ireland, speaking Irish which is a compulsory language in school here and because her Grandfather came from Ireland the two Irish people were wrong and she, being American was right. The second one was an online conversation I was having when and American butted in. Basically it was about Northern Ireland (where I was brought up in my younger years) and the way people feel now regarding the protestant , catholic problems. I was saying that to most people religion really does not matter anymore and that it is more a live and let live type of thing, to which this American Lady chimed in the if I had been on the receiving end of protestant aggression I would not be saying that and that her husband had studied it so she would know. When I pointed out that I had been , that my Dads shop had been blown up twice and we ended up moving back to the Republic due to it she still insisted that she was right so I spelled it out for her that she was talking to one of the people her husband had "studied" and that she is wrong she said, as an American I know more about that history of Ireland than you do because my husband studied it. She basically thought that because her husband had read some books she knew more about Ireland than actual Irish people.

  • 15:52 is the fact that I had a whole little flashback from one day, and science class with my whole group table, making clicking noises at me for the whole class period… I’m Trinidadian I’m not African. There’s nothing wrong with being African. There’s nothing wrong with African culture… but it’s very infuriating like it really does start to get under your skin being harassed and miss labeled and then I’m trying to use all of that to hurt you… growing up in America as a black kid just sucks… especially if you’re up for now because then there’s a 50-50 chance that the other black kids from America won’t be friends with you just because you sound different.. that was my experience. I was the target of my elementary school and that was very confusing because those kids looked like me the only difference was in the way we pronounce the words

  • Universal Healthcare is not socialism. Socialists or socialism is reference to workers controlling the means of production. Things like universal healthcare/socialized medicine are social services not socialism. The difference is socialism is seizing means of production by workers, social services are a form of collectivism which just means people pooling resources to benefit the population as a whole. It's a concept that has existed since ancient times.

    @chowderhead1464@chowderhead146415 күн бұрын
    • Yes, while some words are used different and in general the pronunciation is a little exaggerated to most Americans Scottish English is far easier to understand. Australians shorten a lot of words and have there own words for a lot of things that just don't have any real context in the English language. And in general I understand both just fine, but I do have to try harder to understand what Australians are saying.

  • It's the American educational system. I learned about WWII from the British and Jewish perspectives, a tiny bit of Pearl Harbor, and had to memorize a map of European countries for a geography test. Blank map, write in the countries. Also the cold war and heard of, but not really about the Cuban missle crisis. That's pretty much it. Nothing about WWI or anything recent. Oh,. and that the Soviet Union was now called Russia. Did they explain why? Nope. I also only just realized that what I had neen told and grew up believing about Israel's creation was totally wrong. I thought they went through the dessert in like the 1800's, ended up in what's now Israel.. pissed ppl off.. needed a candle to brun for 30 days & it miraculously did.. then they started defending themselves against everyone around them, won, and now there's a holy site that is contested. All that came from the adults around me.. school didn't cover it at all.

Sometimes, if we choose to answer the question, rather than to just look astonished, it can turn out to be a learning moment for the person who asked the question. If it is posed as a question, it might be honest curiosity from someone who truly wants to understand.

  • ...Slaves did attempt to escape. The underground railroad? Slaves tried to get to Canada for a long long time from the US because Canada (British North America) abolished slavery long before the US did. The thing that kept slaves in line was barbaric punishments and sometimes even death if you were caught. Also the slavers had all the guns and weaponry and you can't fistfight someone with a musket or rifle. That being said when they were liberated by the British during the Revolution and North during the Civil War many did take up arms against their slavers.

Colonialism itself was meant to be a more peaceful version of conquering. The idea was to integrate two cultures together under one rule instead of forcing another country into submission. The practice did not match the ideal though and it was not good results for many colonized nations.

It might sometimes be hard to grasp that Europe itself is not a country comprised of multiple states, like the US, let alone that each of those "states" has their own language.

  • Britain didn't go to war to colonise India, we walked and said we were in charge. Many Indian principalities cheered British rule. We defended them from French and Dutch invasion. We banned religious persecution. We built them railways. We smuggled chamomile tea and rice out of china and asked them to grow it for us. The business arrangement between Britain and India helped us create today's safe world, without them we wouldn't have been able to eradicate pirates or slavery. Dealing with the British empire allowed the Indian population to double because they had our money to feed themselves. Indians were not slaves to the British empire they were a self governed state.

    • You are confusing times there the first time they went there it was by a company and that company did not go there to civilise them it went to make profit till they realised they can rule there by using the various kingdoms and princes against each other it was so bad that the english parliament had to intervene and take over from the British east indian company.

    • @Mr_Jamin007 well that company was started on the behalve of the english monarchy and the aristocrats and also my previostatement meant that the original reason was not to civilise or do good things it was later on in the mid 1800 till the amrican civil war that it changed for the better in India .

  • I’m astounded at your ignorance regarding most other countries healthcare systems. Well, communist and socialism is ridiculous Even more ridiculous given that your wife is Spanish . What do you think happens when you pay into your work or healthcare insurance it gets put into one big pot and some people will use it more than others. Somebody might not use it at all in one year. It’s the same concept only the rest of the world don’t get bankrupted when they get ill . I know you don’t need to say you’re African-American if you were born in America. In the UK, we have many people from the Caribbean and Indian and Pakistan and African countries because of our past, and even though they will know which countries sometimes which tribes they are from they just say they are British. It’s just like the stupidity of saying you’re Italian American because your grandmother was Italian?
