One of the clearest, most detailed explanations I've seen for making a monkey's fist knot. Most of the others lose me when their hands get in the way of what I'm supposed to be seeing or they assume I should know something I don't know. This one has none of that. I make small versions of these for Christmas tree ornaments.
Nice, I'm an ex Aussie navy Sig, we used to make these for our flag signals halyards but we'd weigh them down with some old nuts in the middle. Your demonstration is much simpler than I remember the buffer on a ship I was on doing for us. In the intervening years I'd forgotten how to do it, so thanks, my dogs will love you 😀

Fabulous! I tied many of these back in my tugboating days because ship's crews often didn't return them when we were doing assists, or crewmembers left them on barges. I used my Ashley's for guidance but never felt that book, comprehensive as it is, was the best tutorial. Video helps a lot, but this fellow's low-key simplicity and hints are just perfect.
TIP: The tightening may take several iterations; especially if you want to keep everything nicely organized. Super good explanation, thanks, worked on first try.

Thank you for a well detailed and a pace that was perfect and in laymen's terms of you are just starting out and learning . I have been through at least 20 + videos nothing compares to the way you prepared ,demonstrated and paced every move while explaining in detail why. 6 years later and you're still helping people! I got it the second time trying but I suffered the frustration the first time of the loops getting mixed up and you're right when you say it's hard to get them back to normal again 😅😅 I just kept making it worse

I messed up. I didn't know what strand to tighten next, because i tugged it from the center and the next strand didn't move (so I wasn't able to locate it). I kept going forward and back, forward and back. So I had to file my nails later. Great tutorial BTW. Very detailed

Width of a palm is roughly 3.5 inches. A full wrap around roughly 7. Times 3 wraps is 21. Times 3 sets of that is 63. Tack on a little for the first overhand and the tail, id say ~75-80 inches

I get lost on the tightening part, I just keep going round and round with the same piece and never get to the end bit. So frustrating! So then I have to try and undo the whole thing! About a hundred times 😝 Fellow Aussie here :)

I made one of these years ago when I was a deep sea diver. I had a chunk of lead the size of a golf ball in the center.
I’ve got heaps of heavy lifting loop slings if you can figure out how to tie a ball with one of those you are a god amongst men. Cheers
You could make one using steel bolts, duck tape them together in a ball form, keep ductaping around it verry tightly until you have a smooth ball, its important to ductape tightly. Use youre brains, and household items to make a nice solid ball with old bolts/screws inside

My first money fist. I ended up with four strands on two sides and three on the rest. Considering I was using a 'pillow tube' instead of rope I think I did alright 😅.

That monkey fist noose is what I always have in my backpack as a weapon lol. But I made one as a rope toy for my dog too. And just made a pocket sized one for keys and stuff. I’m memorizing it now 😂 but I messed up on my last one so I’m still off by some. That’s why I came here.

I tied this knot once in the drawstring of some blinds, and discovered something I feel I need to pass on. DO NOT tie this knot in something unless you intend to leave it. As hard as it is to tie, it is even harder to untie. I really sweated it until I had the damn thing undone! My mother would have killed me! You've been warned. ;-)

So I am doing this with a thin paracord, just to learn this stuff. The issue I m consistently having with the cordage that I am using is that it keeps getting twisted up on itself and forming loops inside the knots. Do you have any suggestions or tricks that will help avoid this in wrapped core ropes?
Instead of putting the end of the rope through the knot and pulling until it is tight, try folding the rope over then push the folded section through the knot and pull on the loop until the end slips through.

Followed 6 times but couldnt make it work. Need it slower as each time I would pause I would become confused and loose it.

the part where you cross the rope over and the last set of wraps is whats messing me up. i cant tell if youre going over or under the "half wrap" thatson the inside and once i get to the end, the side withthe knot has 4 wraps and doesnt go into the middle without unraveling

Miguelino I just tried this with 15m of paracord, it was a tiny bit much
The problem with this method is you have to pull all the rope through the minkey fist which is very difficult if you're using anthing approaching a decent length of rope
