  • I think actually Maximus makes a lot of sense. He fell in love with the power armor as a kid, he has a childish need to wear the power armor. He didn't slowly grow into an ideology of brotherhood. That scene where he sees the shiny power armor as he exits the little fridge/dresser (whatever it is) with his full childhood innocence of not being able to process what the hell just happened and seeing that dude in power armor with sun rising in the background made him the person he is. He basically saw an angel and wanted to become one in his mind, and power armor IS the thing he fell in love with. He doesn't care who wears it. Even him leaving the power armor behind carelessly AFTER he fell in love with a girl makes a lot of sense. He finally found someone/something that he loves more than the armor itself.

Like the recent D&D movie, they play everything straight, even the silly bits, and treat it like "the world we're telling this story in is just like this, roll with it". So many superhero movies in particular snarkily lampshade everything like they're embarrassed to be superhero movies. D&DHAT and Fallout *aren't* embarrassed by their respective source materials.

      @HolyBlowhole@HolyBlowholeАй бұрын
    • @@charalanahzard Also, I don't really think of it as the show representing the whole faction this way, just this chapter at this time. I feel the games have never portrayed the BoS as a monolith. Even the difference between the DC chapter under Elder Lyons and after Elder Maxson succeeded him is noticeable. And the Mojave chapter in New Vegas wasn't even following their own rules.

      @MaidenlessBrewer@MaidenlessBrewerАй бұрын
    • Also not giving a lot away we are missing a few factions from the area and the naming scheme of the the brotherhood of steel characters in the show is uniquely related to another faction. • The more I look at how they handled Maximus, the more I think he's actually handled pretty well. Him being only interested in the BoS for the power armor is relatable to a lot of us who also had those initial feelings of wanting to join to just don the suit. Maybe like us, once Maximus gets the power armor, he becomes more interested in what it represents. I can see them exploring it more in S2.

    • I personally don't really understand his hate as well. He acts in a way that makes sense in his character. He is someone who has always been beneath the boot of someone else, and someone who would think they are right to be they way they behave. Both of the people that he threats like shit, are people who threatened him and bullied him beforehand. They gave him plenty of reason if you ask me. Maximus to me, is someone who is in the Brotherhood because he feels he owes something to them. The brotherhood gave him a home, food, and a place to belong in. I feel like he genuinely does believe (or at least used to believe) in their cause. Him meeting Lucy is a bit of culture shock to him as he meets someone who is not from his world. And then he finds himself in her home and he at first finds it hard to adjust and believe but he starts to settle because Lucy HERSELF asked him to calm down and to give it a chance. I think I need to look up why people think he is very selfish ngl.

Not to the point of say "The Ghoul", or "Hank", but he's not in the brotherhood to help people (and in this part of the U.S., at this time, the brotherhood goal is not to help people anyway). He says it plainly in his squire interview. "Why did you join the Brotherhood?" "To hurt the people who hurt me". Frankly, I find that to be a reasonable motivation, but it's not exactly a holy high calling or something. Still, I think people are being a bit harsh on him.

    • @@PraxisAbraxis The writing may have been on the wall in the books and to some degree in the show, but I think the majority of complaints are about pacing and characterization. The earlier seasons were covering weeks of real time across 10 episodes. The last couple seasons, 8 is especially bad in this regard, covered what would have been multiple seasons worth of time in between episodes. Characters are basically teleporting around Westeros. It's jarring. The poor characterization in the later seasons indicates D&D were bored and wanting to move on. They didn't have as much material to riff on, so they skipped the focus on characters and focused on spectacle. It went from a dialogue heavy political thriller in seasons 1-5 to a mediocre action fantasy movie in seasons 6-8. Dany was always going to break bad in end, but her descent was logical and slow until the last season. She went from brutal, but fair to actually insane in a relative blink of an eye.

Lucy is the good because of just her trusting and hopeful nature with people and how she wants to help others. Maximus WAS the bad because of his own clouded ambitions and reasons. He only joins the brotherhood for revenge and power, he let his knight die, he was going to kill Thadeus, and he wanted or was ok with the idea of Dane getting maimed for getting picked over him. And the ugly is The Ghoul. And not just in terms of looks, but from the fall of who he once was as a person. He is an example of how twisted or grotesque a person like Lucy could become. But by the end the three impacted each other in one way or another. The good (lucy) impacted the bad (maximus) and pushed him more towards being good, and the ugly (the ghoul) impacted the good (lucy) and made her experience and adapt to the ugly.

He said this show is canon and part of the same universe. What's the point of playing these story-driven Fallout games if some random tv show can sh1t all over the canon however they want. As far as I'm concerned, NV isn't canon anymore until Jonathon or Todd comes clean and admit the lore mistakes in the show. Btw there are at least 5 critical mistakes. Shady Sands can't be a crater and completely annihilated in 2277, we have multiple characters mentioning about it in the NV. Shady Sands is in the wrong place in the show, it should be hundreds of miles north-west. Shady Sands isn't in LA. They should have nuked Boneyard if they really wanted that crater in the show. They ruined BoS, they are nothing like how they are shown in the show. No branding squires, no clerics, no religious bullshit. They are so stuck in that codex of theirs, even some Elders know that they will lose and die in the end but still sticks to it. Their change in the show is bs. Sinclair isn't owner or CEO of Big MT, he is a costumer and Big MT literally experiments on his casino. The show ruins Robert House, he would never be in bed with Vault Tec and their bonkers plan of destroying the world. He is for progress and space exploration ffs. In the show he sees business opportunities in the nuclear apocalypse. I can go forever. These can all be no problem if Todd comes clean and declares the show an alternate universe and not canon.

The good, bad, and ugly reference was a grand catch. It was hard to miss, it was utilized so well. From the moment the first stimpack is used to the end I was constantly catching deja-vu moments. The 3 leads were great, but most of all was the great story telling that encapsulated all the Fall Out worlds and ended with that amazing look at Season 2 destination, New Vegas. Greatly looking forward to more.....War never changes.

  • I agree with about 99% of what was said here, and I really appreciate the perspective given. I have watched a bunch of breakdowns and discussions about the show and this is probably one of my favorites. The things I don't agree with though are the binging model vs weekly, mainly because I'm a consumer and not a content creator. I hate waiting a week to just inch forward on a story in a series, and I would rather be able to binge and rewatch with the gift of knowing how certain things turn out. It also gives me the chance to spend the following days and weeks watching everyone's POV on their take of the show as well. Weekly drops leads to people speculating and either trying not to spoil what might come up later, or just straight up spoiling future episodes because they are extremely knowledgeable about the source materials that the story lines are being pulled from. Also, there are videos out there explaining how this doesn't break the lore of New Vegas. Fallout 4 and New Vegas were never given canon endings, and this show could be filling in the gaps in future episodes/seasons. There's even hints towards what Fallout 5 might give us as far as possible protagonist or locations we could be exploring.

  • Maximus is definitely a coward at certain points but I don’t think he’s selfish. Like when he lets Lord Titus die to his wounds, that wasn’t him being selfish. It was him standing up for himself against an arrogant prick who chose to put Maximus’s life below his despite him wearing power armour. Not only that but we also see him try to save others on a few occasions such as when he saves that salesmen from the farmer (not knowing he was a pig fucker) and when he saves Thaddeus, one of the members of the BOS that bullied him, from that water creature. If anything, I think the Ghoul is wayyy more selfish than Maximus is, considering he sold Lucy to that hospital for a few vials.

    • Also I think you misrepresented why a portion of fans are peeved at the show. It’s not cause it isn’t everything *they* wanted (of course there’s a few that feel that way, as you said) but it’s mostly because the date on that black board means that certain events in New Vegas would be invalidated, despite it being cannon. Hopefully it was just an oversight, but idk how they could get that messed up considering how well they did everything else in the show 😅

  • One thing most people never mention is that the easter eggs are not just about showing a bobblehead or a sunset sarsparilla poster. Lucy is using a Fallout 4 10 mm pistol and has no issue using it, the BOS squire becoming ghoul is using a Fallout 3 10mm and complains that you can't aim with that thing because there was no ironsight aiming in FO3 . this had me cracking up. Lucy's introduction is basically her Special stats and her 3 tagged skills, which she uses primarily during the show. I didn't care about the dates on a board for the nuking of shady sands, so many things could have happened and it doesn't say that it was nuked in 2277 but that it fell.

  • I interpreted the three main characters as the writers trying to embody three different playstyles. Lucy is the ultra paragon player that tries to be an upstanding citizen, the ghoul is the renegade play style, and Maximus is the player that is only concerned with getting cool weapons and increasing their own stats and only cares about the plot if it gets him what he needs. I loved the show even more when I thought about it that way.

    @Lexyboogie@LexyboogieАй бұрын
  • See I like that Maximus wasn't a die hard Brotherhood devotee. It mimics the player character in the games mashing through dialogue just to get that cool-ass suit. Putting up with the bare minimum until you can step inside that bad boy. When he finally gets the suit and just has a montage of him spinning around and jumping I related with him so much. My guy just wants to have fun in the wasteland and I'm here for it.

    @SolaireIntensifies@SolaireIntensifies12 күн бұрын
  • I enjoyed Maximus' character very much. I like that there's this uninteresting, regular grunt that's not very intelligent or smart. It's this very flat character that gives other more charismatic characters a stage to perform and shine over. It's just a kid who likes pew pew and the dominance a power armor gives him. Kid is just trying to live his dream and not think too much about anything else. You cannot really hate him and it's hard to love him. His character is a great vehicle to push narrative, get away with things in the show. A simple man that gives the audience easy way to see the contrast between all main characters. It's a really clever way to basically build anything on his very flat, emotional and neutral stance. It's a great addition to the show and I bet we'll be in a long haul with him in the upcoming season/s.

I have the same feeling of compartmentalizing what you do and don't enjoy from the tv/movie adaptations compared to what you really enjoyed about playing or reading. I thought you described that very well. I guess not for game or comic book adaptions, but for books, once you watch it you (or at least I) have a much harder time remembering how you pictured everything the first time you read it. Like, Frodo is now Elijah Wood for me, HP is Daniel Radcliffe, I could not for the life of me bring back the imaginings I had from the first time I read those. If the adaption is good enough, maybe doesn't matter, but when they aren't, now you have your experience kinda tainted.

Let the art stand on its own without relying on community hype and theorycrafting to artificially and temporarily boost the show's quality. • RE: The Brotherhood of Steel. I also didn't like the chapter of the BoS shown in the series, but also recall that every BoS chapter is a little different from the others. The one in the TV series, we are told by the Elder, is sort of falling apart. In a future series, I would love to see a different sort of BoS chapter that perhaps challenges the experience Maximus had with the his chapter. In Fallout 76, we have a fair "noble" detachment of the BoS. In New Vegas, the chapter's moral compass is a little more gray. In Fallout 3, the Outcasts are also a little difficult to warm too. In Fallout 4, the BoS chapter definitely can come across as jack booted thugs. That's what makes Fallout fun (tm)!
