Magnus Carlsen was only 13 years old here.
Prince of Chess directed and produced by Øyvind Von Doren Asbjørnsen. See the whole film here: www.princeofchess.com. This was at the Reykjavic Rapid 2004 tournament where some of the world's best players competed.
A rapid game between the past and future world champion? 2 of the worlds greatest players indeed. I wonder what would happen if they were to play now.
Interesting that sometime after this, Kasparov started coaching Carlsen for a while.

This is exactly what I thought seeing all the videos of Magnus being late to many matches, haha.
Magnus recently said in a podcast that he was insanely intimidated by Kasparov. He said I was studying so many opening variations only to realise that Kasparov is the one who invented them. And I as a beginner don’t know if I’m more impressed by Carlsen or Kasparov 😂

Obviously Kasparov had an immense pressure not to lose to a 13yo and #700 in the world. BUT... damn did Magnus as a kid made him shit bricks during the whole game. The amount of confidence at 13 years of age from Magnus is outstanding. 3:13 I think Kasparov did that move on purpose since Magnus wasn't looking at the board at the time. Little did it work when the kid came back running to make his move knowing exactly what he had moved and making Kasparov even MORE nervous. Kasparov was terrified of 13yo Magnus!
maybe he was terrified but in the end he drew the game and won the second game (where it was up to him to use the whites). Of course, in the first game Magnus had an advantage but also less time and for this reason he could not achieve the victory, in the second game Kasparov dominated. Sorry for my bad english,Is not my mother lenguage
Bro, they were playing the opening. Of course Magnus immeidately knew what to play, if he didn't, then he wouldn't even be an IM. This is very standard stuff and Gary was just deciding how he would like to proceed with the opening. Stop inflating the situation if you don't know much about what's happening.

Absolutely amazing and a clear glimpse into the future of Chess and its World Champion in the making.
Taking his time. I don’t get why people are saying this. Magnus had way more time off his clock. Looks like Kasparov was moving faster.

Favorite part is Magnus getting distracted, walking around, Kasparov heavy hits the timer, Magnus hurries back and makes a move immediately.
Many people seem to think Magnus leaving momentarily (Kasparov gives him a look over it) was part of some mind game. In a recent interview he said Kasparov was taking too long and he just got bored, deciding to check out some of the other games going on.

I don't know about that - it seems a bit too perfect. A 13 year old kid reading Donald Duck comics? 7 years, yes - but 13? My 13 year old self was well past Donald Duck. Having worked in TV, "embellishments" for the sake of a good story happen all the time.
He arrived late. Kept the kid waiting. Then stormed out.

Yeah pretty sad, magnus probably idolised him at the time and would have wanted to talk to him at the least.
What hasn't been shown is that Magnus Carlsen lost to Kasparov in a blitz game before this one. And he lost to Kasparov in the very next rapid game and was eliminated. Although very impressive draw against the greatest considering he is only 13!
That's true, but at 13 he was probably expected to lose all three games. He was already probably playing at GM strength even if he didn't yet have the title though.

Played with Gary, simultaneous chess. I have never seen somebody so deep in the game and so afraid that he may lose from some no-name. I guess that’s his fuel. He was late on all us, and he was making ticks and sounds all the time over our board. Of course, he’s a chess genius. And then he came back and instantly played his move XD
@@rahulshanbhag08 Yeah lol. Just noticed that. Don't want to be Garry at that moment. Hahahaha. The casual disrespect lol.
That's not "getting bored" it's a concentration technique, some people love taking ideas out of their surroundings. Everytime he stood up was everytime he couldn't decide what to do next, the games happening around him gave him inspiration for his next move
Kid was probably nervous, sort of restless and had already thought out all his moves so he went to look at the other tables..
Its not because hes bored. Sometimes theres a limit to how much you can calculate and then theres no point staring further at the board.

Probably just because of the sheer pressure of this battle defining the world championship so he cannot messed up
The thing is, it isn't fun being the number one in the world and it's a lot more stressful. Anyone can play against you, and if they lose, who cares. But if they win, it's a whole different story. It's easier to play when you have nothing to lose Also, they played 3 games against Magnus in this event. Kasparov won 2, drew 1. This video only showed the one they drew, for obvious reasons
Deciding which opening he went would decide what kind of game this would end up as, so it's somewhat important.
It's amazing to think that today Carlson is arguably considered to be greater than Kasparov even though Carlsen is 10 years younger today than when Kasparov retired in 2005. If Carlsen plays these next ten years as well he's done so far there will be absolutely no question that he is the best to have ever played the game
He said he aims at being the first 2900 player but I wouldn't surprise if he cracks the 3000 in 10 years

At 3:13 an hilarious signature move was in the making And Kasparov shaking his head in shock is one of the most epic moments in any chess game I've ever seen
Or he was shaking his head to clear the cobwebs … from doing shots and partying with hookers until 3am the night before and regretting it. That’s my interpretation.
I think it shocked Kasparov that he is just stood up and left he was like what the hell.
Magnus gettin him back for showing up late.
@nurzur Wait for Misha Osipov
wrr
This is just real life netflix Queen's gambit
So everyone is getting obsessed with that show huh not just me
@@annabelmboqe8631 what can I say, I’m a sucker for big tiddie redheads
Is that how you guys procrastinate?
Yess
@@annabelmboqe8631 62 million households have watched the show. What do you think?
at around 3:20 when Magnus started to watch other people playing Kasparov was over. Knowingly or not, Magnus did a mental attack on Kasparov's pride right then and there. His brain was probably asking rethorically to Magnus "how you dare to be bored when playing with me, the greatest of all times?how can you get up the chair to watch other people play? am i a joke to you?". than when Magnus heard the click, just came back , moved a piece casually. So much pain delivered in 10-15 seconds i almost feel sorry for Kasparov.
Hmm... Magnus recently showed up late for a match (due to traffic)... I wonder if he had flashback memories of this [ waiting for Kasparov ]?
Magnus: Makes common opening move Kasparov: *Hears boss music*
The fact he stood up to watch another player’s games against one of the greatest in history of all time is Bad Ass, like Gary said Magnus is the combination of Karpov and Fisher.
#CarlsenSC 🤘
After losing the first 2 he probably got bored
Every player literally does this in these long time format games
@@tajneeley yeah people comment on KZhead about things they think are epic, that are actually quite commonplace.
I wish we could see them play at the same age of 20. Chess grandmasters are always on the younger side. By the time they hit 40s- 50d they get overtaken by someone younger. Chess is a young man's game
You can tell Magnus looked up to him cause he centers every one of his pieces before making his first move.
Necesito una película que narré este momento histórico
Let's be honest, the pressure Kasparov has had his entire life is insanely unhealthy. No-one should be subjected to the expectation to win every time he plays.
Especially when it's a nothing burger game, and K looked hung over.
Except for Magnus now you mean?
@@tommyodonovan3883 ...and was late lol...
Magnus has that same pressure right now. Every world champion is expected to win every single game they play. When magnus lost his first classical game in over 400 days people talked about it for weeks. I don't understand the point you are making
@@SonicPhonic, when dealing with Nordic types.... never be late!
