Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.
As an Irishman, happy to see some of our great exports featured here. Have visited the Aran sweater market plenty over the years. Their stuff is really buy it for life. They last
they truly will last a lifetime my only problem was not with the sweater it was me getting bigger in my old age i am a 3x lg now. i wear the captain of the boat size now hee hee.
Do the aran sweaters run large or smaller?
@@gehrig398 hi, the ones from Aran sweater market - size pretty true / slight tapered fit. I’ve a large and I’m 6’2 slim-muscular build. Fits pretty spot on for me :)
I own three sweaters from the Aran sweater market and all of them are phenomenal! Well worth the price and the wait to get them shipped to the states.
Gotta say Aran sweater market is where it’s at. A large array of styles and colors. My favorite is the hoodie style. All of them are comfortable and good looking. Highly recommend checking them out if your looking for a fisherman sweater.
Thanks for the memories: My mother used to knit them for my father and me.
That’s so cool! Do you still have any?
@@CarlMurawski Thank you, and thanks for asking. I have 2 that surprisingly still fit. On examination, neither is a true Fisherman, although both have the pattern. One has a V-neck, and the other has a weird collar. She thought she was knitting a shawl collar but it turned out to be a flap on the back closer to a sailor's shirt. That one also has a full-length front zipper with a great story. No stores carried the length needed, so instead of trying to turn it into a pull-over or buttons, she called Talon to ask if they had that length. When they found out why she wanted it, they cut it to length and sent it with their compliments!
They're also called Ganseys. I did an internship with a company that gets them hand-knitted (Wayside Flower in Bridlington, if you're interested). They're also knitted, not woven. ;) Thank you for making this video. Your enthusiasm and appreciation for these cultural and historic garments is as beautiful as the things themselves 🥰
Thanks for the info!
Again, quality content from my favorite youtuber
I’m honored man! Thank you
I didn't know I needed this video but now, as usual, I'm transfixed and totally nerding out on sweaters.
Lmao that ad was great!
Hahaha thank you!
I saw your last video a few days ago but in this lockdown it feels like it's been a year since i watched a video of yours, it's always good to watch one of your videos in these covid times, great video keep them coming!
Hi Carl, I’ve been watching your videos for a while now and I almost always take something away that I didn’t know before and look forward to every new release, even when it’s about something I didn’t know I would even be interested in. I appreciate what you’re doing, hope you continue on, and wish you a prosperous 2021.
Its 8F right now and I bought my Marino wool sweater handmade from Russia. Its the most expensive piece of clothing I've ever bought but my god is it worth it.
Where did you get it?
@@harmanlesli Mountains Handmade on Etsy. The ladies name is adele. They are unisex pullovers. You can get a turtle neck, hoodie, or both(combo).
I’ve been paying attention since your video it all had to come to an end sometime, I can definitely pick up on the fact that you’re kicking into high gear. I don’t know what your endgame is but the direction you’re headed is absolutely the right direction. Please keep it up, a lot of us count on your feedback on men style. Awesome channel keep it up!
My Step dad bought a jumper up near Oban yrs ago, i really wanted it and would still love one. It was the densest tightest weave jumper i have seen.
hahahahahahahaha I never thought I'd see the day you do a Adam and Eve ad! hahaha congrats and I hope the ads help keep the lights on!
Or off.....
Very quickly once you start looking at these, even a novice like me can see & feel the difference between the machine knit sweaters & the real handknitted sweaters. The difference is immediately recognizable - the handknits are chunkier, and often use the finest yarns. It's worth talking with Ann at O'Máille in Galway. She knows each of her Aran craftswomen by name, and she's really great with style too. I'm short (5'7"), and I like a sportier cut than the traditional over-the-butt drape of the typical fisherman's sweater. Ann had one of her women knit me a custom sweater in genuine charcoal Donegal yarn (the natural color of a black sheep). I chose the stitches I liked, the collar and cuff styles too. It is the chunkiest sweater I have ever seen anywhere, and I will treasure it for life. And the price was less than I expected to pay for an off-the-shelf sweater, based on my research before visiting Ireland.
Great video !! Really enjoyed it :) Love the fisherman sweater and the mini skit 👍🏻👍🏻
I love the layout, both video and written. The ad is awesome! Overall, beautifully done.
Thank you so much!
I got a merino wool turtleneck in an oatmeal color from Aran for Christmas and I love it! Kept me warm on a 5-6 mile hike in sub 30 and works equally well with a sport jacket and some boots. I enjoyed it so much i bought another one of their donegal ones in a dark green. Also, appreciate the effort you’re putting into the ads.
I'm looking for an Aran sweater right now. I also think more recently Chris Evans in Knives Out got some buzz fashion wise for another recent cultural occurrence.
the celtic store in philedelphia has aran name brand imported from the aran islands they ship free right here in the usa. $89 bucks right now in 2021. jj just google the name celtic clothing it will pop right up.
Love this, brother. Now I have to dig out my ivory one. My ancestors are from Norway and Denmark, so I need an ancestral-appropriate fishermen’s sweater...
Great video Carl. Thanks. I have a handed-down (family heirloom) Aran Sweater, made in 1965. It is one of my favourite garments. The front and back panels are mirror images of each other, knitted separately then stitched together. I believe the idea is that when the front wears out (it is a working mans sweater) then you turn it around and have the unworn back as the new front, thereby doubling its life span. Over 50years old and still has its ivory colour, the elastic and thermoregulation qualities of the wool.
Just got myself one in charcoal for this fall and coming winter this video was very helpful thank you.
ALWAYS love the explanation and origin descriptions you give for the clothing. Keep it up., Mate🙌😆
Thanks, will do!
Thank you for such an in-depth and unexpected video! I still have a beautiful sweater that my grandmother from Edinburgh, Scotland made for my dad. I love it because it’s a slightly tighter knit than the ones you see today and it’s a darker off white color. Cheers!
Great video! It just so happens that as I watch this video I have my ivory aran on. It is a great staple for the damp british winters or the cold Canadian ones in which I grew up in. Keep up the great work.
Best thing over your kilt in cool weather! My first Scottish fisherman's sweater was a hand-me-down after my oldest brother put his in the dryer. That really tightened the weave. It looked great and was bullet proof!
Been waiting for this one! Always wanted one!
Coolest part about Aran Sweater shop is if your Irish descended like me you can find your family clan sweater!
So cool!
My dad found a vintage one in a consignment shop a few years ago, he hardly wore it and finally saw it fit to pass it to me, it’s definitely my favorite sweater and it gets at least one compliment every time I wear it
That was actually a tasteful Adam and Eve ad haha, I was very skeptical when I saw that in the description.
Nice one Carl wool jumpers are the way forward in the winter! A great brand over here is Aran Crafts. I have 5 jumpers in normal wool and merino combos from them and recommend. But your cant go wrong with any hand made wool garment from Ireland or Scotland
I just spent part of the late morning doing livestock chores in +3F temps. I have some decent winter work wear but I'd have been happy to have had one of these sweaters on.
Love these- my husband does too so im knittin him one right now ❤ great information
You’re the man Carl
No he is.
Thank you for your informative video. I didn't know their origin. I love a good quality Irish / Scottish sweater. I have a couple imitations, but I plan to invest in a true one soon. I like the Grey's and dark blues.
Great video, the older I get the more I realise the old classics can’t be beat . Got my eye on a Shackleton in navy blue . To change up my submariners jumper from time to time . Keep up the cracking content pal.
Thanks for this!
My mother made me one really really chunky when i was a kid some 15 years ago. It was way to big then but it still fits me now, and I look forward every year to the cold winter days when i can wear it. Great video as always and you really pumped up the production quality. Cheers.
Thank you my friend!
Thanks Carl - being in land locked Oklahoma, I don't think about these often, but after this video it's time to go on the hunt. Another terrific video - thanks!
Thank you for watching!!!
hahaha Carl you made my Thursday, a great ad.
Dude as I’ve gotten older I’ve learned so much about how to learn your personal style and also about buying less in order to essentially have more to wear. I always thought that my style was sort of eccentric and beachy but as I’ve aged I’ve paid attention to the fact that I always seem to gravitate to comfort and what I’ve now learned is a more Americana comfort meets workwear style and I’m incredibly grateful to have run across your channel. Yours is my favorite by far and although I can’t always afford the pieces I’ve developed a mindset that is now focused on substance and quality within the parameters of my budget. With that said, thanks for continuing to educate us on all things “style” and much appreciation for all that goes in to each video. ✌🏽😎✌🏽 oh and I wish I could raid your closet😂😂😂😂😂
Your videos keep getting better and better and your ads deserve awards.
Thank you!!! Lol
Man. I have to thank you for recommending Aran Sweater Market. I’ve been looking for a heavy wool sweater for camping/hiking/hunting use for a long time and their Heavyweight Traditional Aran Sweater hit the nail on the head! Great service and great sweater. From Killarney to my front door in the US, 2.5 days. Unreal! Thanks again for the recommendation!
how did you do sizing whise?
Great piece. I live in Cornwall ( Britain ) where we also have a long tradition of fisherman’s jumpers. Im lucky enough to have hand knitted jumpers made by my mum and grandmother and wear jumpers at work and out and about in all weathers! Cheers
Fabulous discussion 😀
I’m sure the add took a while but I appreciate the effort to make it entertaining
Thank you for making this video Carl. I appreciate it :)
My pleasure!
@@CarlMurawskiYou are an inspiration for seventeen year olds like me and my friends 👍
I just bought that exact same model sweater from the Aran Sweater Market in gray. I like it but I must admit I wish it was a more relaxed cut. I love to layer underneath my sweaters and I like doing it with a nice flannel shirt. It works but a little constricting in the shoulders. I think I might look into the rag wool roll neck sweater. That one looks really awesome!!
Absolutely love that green olive shirt!
I was upset that we didn’t have a good winter and boom we get the freeze from hell
It’s freezing here in Houston, it’s a good thing I have my sweater
Great video Carl. One of my true grail pieces is a traditional hand knitted gansey.
I live in the celtic region of Cornwall (Kernow) in Southwest of England and frequently wear a black and fairly plain stitched ‘fisherman’s jumper/sweater’ (no turtle neck). As you say, a heavily versatile jumper, and though it’s warm, I also find mine breathes really easily so is perfect for those not too hot spring/summer evenings outside, especially if there’s a bit of wind. It’s also excellent for layering up for what you guys would refer to as ‘yard work’. I usually layer up with a Dickies Portland or my peter storm anorak if I’m out in the woods or on a beach walk with my family. Great video as always, Carl, please do keep them coming!
My girlfriend bought me one for my birthday last year and it is legitimately the most comfortable garment I own. Because of the loose knit idk if I'd wear it to work personally, but it's awesome to throw on casually on a cold day. Looks great with jeans and boots 👌.
You’re carving a way for menswear ! Love the classics!
I love to knit them the patterns are fun.
I bought my father a 3 button fisherman pullover sweater for Christmas and since that I've felt the need to grab myself a fisherman sweater. My father had the same Brooks Brother's cable knit sweater for longer than I've been alive so it's something that he definitely holds dear to him.
That’s so cool! Items to pass on
I think the fisherman sweater is a classic and ageless piece of fashion. I am wearing a 'cheaper' one watching this now. Love the fisherman/lighthouse keeper look and hope to add couple more quality sweaters to my collection. One of the most versatile pieces of clothing in any wardrobe that goes alongside things like the white polo, khaki/olive chinos and white tennis shoe
Review on Tom Beckbe fleece/ best fleece jackets. Keep up the great work👍
I've always been drawn to fisherman's sweater and actually thrifted a Jeep brand fisherman sweater. Surprisingly it quite nice and it's made from 100% pure virgin wool. I have had my eye on getting another one and really like the offering from Mister Freedom in indigo
I am going to knit one. Just got the yarn today.
Wow! I’ve been wearing fisherman’s sweater without knowing there’s an origin story. Thank you!
"...Some exclusions apply" haha best ad ever, Carl. Get that ad money, you deserve it. As for Fisherman Sweaters, I don't know much about them but I have some in my vintage inventory. I've got a couple of Irish made and some Scottish made, too. I'm holding, in my hand right now, a vintage, Aran Crafts Ireland, 100% Merino Wool button up cardigan-style sweater. It's a light lavender color with all the fancy cable stitches and the like. Has embroidered, purple and green flowers on the collar and front, chore coat style pockets. It's a beautiful piece, probably late 80s to early 90s. I've got some experience/history with crochet, so I am always fascinated by this type of knitted wool garments. I've made hats and sold them in the past (sold one to a high school buddy and he wore it while he was deployed in Afghanistan) but am working on evolving what I've been doing for 14 years into the next level. Hand crochet made garments, hats, gloves, sweaters and more...made to last, designed for functionality.
Very cool man!!! Thank you for sharing!
Great Video 👍🏻
excellent review of the sweaters. I've got 5 wool sweaters, all from Irish, Scottish , and a few miliary surplus, German. Swedish. all heavy. very warm and in harsh environments, the best thing to have on your back, better than a jacket for breathability and comfort.
I love my fisherman’s sweater, it’s not something I wear off the job but it sees lots of wear in the winters doing bridge work on the railway in canada. Nothing beats a fisherman’s sweater with a pair of overalls in the winter!
My gf got me a fisherman sweater from duluth for Christmas. It's great, warm enough to wear in the winter with a light jacket even in michigan. 100% Shetland wool so is itchy but function is more important to me, just suck it up buttercup. Love the look and function. Nice video as always 👍
One of the greatest products ever invented! I’ve got one from LL Bean, one from Ireland and one from Scotland. Great video man!
That was by far the best sponsor plug I’ve ever seen
Dude the ad was amazing
Would love a video on heimat sweaters!
Great video as always but can you recommend a couple brands to start with?
My mom had a hand knitted one from Ireland that she loved (and I hated). 20 yrs later and I can appreciate that it is a quality, timeless thing and well worth the money
Awesome video!! I too share the same passion for quality pieces that I can use for work/casual attire and this video was extremely insightful. Subscribed!
Awesome! Thank you!
I love the Arthur beale brand in the UK there Oiled Wool Beerenberg Pullover are amazing quality
Another winning video. Great ideas, thanks, although Winter is coming to an end already in Japan
Yeah, we only have a month left here in the states... I really want to visit Japan one day!!!
Dude these ads are really creative. How did you make ads entertaining?
That's Carl's magic. :)
I just bought the same you show in the video in white. Keep it up man! Cheers from Sicily (hope it gets cold enough to wear it few times a year lol)
Haha yeah man! I almost got the white or cream colors just to keep original, but then I saw the claret!
Hate to bother you, I got the same one in white. Anyways, its merino wool but its still pretty itchy and coarse, plus the tag says "virgin wool" does yours says the same too? Thanks.
That claret color sweater is 🔥. I need to put it on my “to get” list.
the charcoal color is cool and so is the oatmeal color. great quality.
I've always been a sucker for the commando sweater: the heavy ribbed for her pleasure knit.
I have quite a few from Inis Meain (Ireland), SNS Herning (Denmark), and one from Inverallan (Scotland hand knitted). All great and also my favorite style.
Timely, haha, I'm hand knitting my husband a Gansey right now.
Though Danish, I've had an S.N.S. Herning bubble knit fisherman sweater for three years now and I find myself reaching for it all the time.
Love sweaters. I have an ivory cable knit sweater handmade in the Republic of Ireland. I also have a Canadian made, of British wool, in rib knit with roll down collar, in dark navy colour. Both are very heavy. A British knit is a tight weave with a more plai texture compared to the highly patterned cable knit.
God i love the new outro
I bought a Peregrine Hudson Aran fisherman sweater yesterday at the Goodwill bins for $3.74. It retails for £125. It's made in England and Peregrine has been making clothes since 1796. Looking forward to wearing it in the colder months.
I have Irish and scottish but living in Finland I come across a lot of lovely bargain second hand Norwegian ones which are top quality.
Irish culture is very interesting and unique much love from ph. Edit 1:skilegg gift store one was actually the cheapest site but aran sweater market have more black option I'm on my wool obsession phase
please do more skits, you are actually good at skit acting
You should most definitely check out norlender knitwear. Made in Norway, using wool from ancient breeds of Norwegian sheep. Truly excellent craftsmanship in the products and design.
I’ve always wanted to add a decent sweater to my wardrobe, but never found the right one. Thanks for dropping the names of places to look. I’ve friend big box chains and I’m just not finding what I want.
My gran's a great knitter and I have multiple fishermen's sweaters handmade by her. They're great sweaters and whenever I wear them I feel grateful that she put so much time and love into them. I would happily pay her for them but she refuses hahaha
You are very lucky! Appreciate it!
I have two from Aran sweater market. They’re insanely warm. I usually will wear it without a coat in weather 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below. If the weather is around 20 degrees or below I’ll put a coat over top.
Hey Carl I'm thinking of getting one what size did you order? Great video also!
Enjoyed the history section
It took a lot of searching surprisingly. I found some facts to be contradictory and others to be unsubstantiated. All in all I hope I have an accurate representation
Was thinking about picking one up from o'connell
check out the wooly sweater from THE SHETLAND WOOLEN COMPANY FROM SCOTTLAND. there Shetland wool is amazing and warm. now as heavy as merino wool, a bit more coarse, but cozy nun the less.
My gf got me an Aran sweater with my family crest on the tag! it's awesome!
That’s awesome!!!
Bought two roll neck sweaters during sale a month or so ago (in honey amd green). Man, they're damn comfortable, warm and good smelling ❤️
Aran sweater market, of course!
incredible ad man
Haha thank you!
The Aran jumper is masculine as all outdoors. I'm wearing one in the Chicago winter. I get compliments all the time.
My great grandmother is an amazing knitter and her husband my great grandfather always wore handkinnted fisherman jumpers as he was a fisherman before ww2 and they do have specific knitts for locations so my grandfather was from Sheringham (a small Norfolk fishing town) and his jumpers always had the sherinigham kintt . it for for in the case of loss of life when the body's where found and they could be turned to there home where hopefully someone could id the body and if not they would at least get the burial from there family. But once again great video carl and I just brought myself one from the aran company as my knitting skills army quite good enough to knit one that nice and my great grandmother only knitts children cloths now
Just ordered another one last Thursday, along with a zip cardigan. I wish I could wear wool, but it drives me nuts with itchiness- to include socks and hats. Thankfully, cotton options out there. '
