This is the Ben at his prime
long before he got injured and then retired. it was a bad career move to postpone the surgery, then return from a 2yr layoff to face the UFC's best. He must've (albeit strangely) thought they were worse than the other promotions cos he never tried that with his previous competition.

Askrens wrestling is fascinating. It's one of those situations where you watch wrestlers try to take guys down and they get stuck in that position just trying to do the same technique that was already countered. Then you watch askren and you see him easily counter those responses with techniques that aren't particularly spectactular but are so obvious you have a duh moment where you're almost baffled other guys didn't think to do the same things.

Askren is an amazing talent. Got that Fedor style dad-bod, looks totally out of shape, but just smokes dudes. Going into this fight I would have thought Lima would knock him out, but nope. Askren is something special.

I rather like Ben askren. Idk why he has so many haters. He's a beast and is funny and has a great personality. I love Douglas lima too. When he ko'd mvp I was elated!
MMA is full of wannabe alphas that are unhealthily obsessed with the whole ‘respect’ thing. Ben isn’t and that hurts a lot of people’s feelings. Many MMA fighters are incredibly insecure.

people don't like the idea that the bruce lee shit they saw growing up isn't the most effective fighting style. I see the point where askren is bad for the sport because of just how dull he is to some but if you are a mma fan and you don't see how good wrestling makes mma fighters you are just dumb. those guys compete 50 matches a year from the time they are 12-13 to 25 and that shit makes a difference.

This is why MMA came to fruition. All these guys that take all these traditional martial arts. Jiu jitsu took things by storm. But now the scales of the balance has changed. Ben Askren doesn't think, he does it. It is like "Mushin"= empty mind. He may not be this traditional martial artists, but he gets it done!!!!
All you crybaby Askren haters have got to be 10 years old. You realize this is his career, right? I suppose every QB should only throw deep passes.. since it's entertaining. And pitchers should only throw strikes down the middle so that batters can go yard all day.. to entertain you. Askren is fairly new to the MMA game, and clearly he's sticking to what's comfortable to him while he develops the rest of his game. Being the champ and 10-0, he couldn't care less what you stay-at-homes think.
Askren has great wrestling. I would rank his wrestling among the best welterweights of the world. However, he still has to improve his striking and develop his submission skills. He will face MMA fighters who are great strikers and or great submission artists, especially if he gets to the UFC.
Everybody complains about takedowns, boring fights blah blah blah.... well you can always watch Thai Boxing (kickboxing) but nobody wants to do that

i think lima did a lot better than most others vs askren..sure askren was the aggressor mostly..but lima didint get manhandled like most other guy aksen fights..he kept his guard for the most time and didint take any power shots

Its good to see Ben win again I know his style is (boring) but they way he fights on the ground is soo funky its a trip.
Ben Askren is one of the best wrestlers in MMA and has a great chin as well. Physically, he imposes his will on his opponents for the majority of almost all of his fights. He has had one semi-close fight his entire career with Jay Hieron. If this were boxing, then Askren would not do well, but it's not, and he has a title belt. All of this is pretty inconsequential anyway, as I know I'm right and don't really need to prove it to the likes of you.

I don't actually think Hendrix vs. Askren would be a 12 second, fight (Hendrix would definitely win). I was just comparing Askren to Fitch, you can't deny the similar fighting styles. I'm sure Askren will be a great fighter in a couple years, but as of now, Askren's striking is elementary, he refuses to display his offensive Jujitsu affectively (yes, I know he's good on the ground from who he rolls with) and Askren refuses to go for the kill, despite being on top for about 90% of his fights.
I apologize for appearing like a jerk earlier. I see HUGE potential in Ben Askren. Askren just needs to except that evolution is essential, if he's ever going to fight top tier competition. When Askren is holding down a guy who isn't in his league, go for a choke, an arm or posture up and drop big bows, as opposed to his usual love tap ground and pound. I'm afraid Mr. Askren may have to lose to learn how to progress.

Ben Askren is not the most entertaining fighter, but his game plan was effective. Lima should have known what Askren's intentions were. Don't get me wrong I was rooting for Lima, but Askren played it safe and smart.

Agree I really liked the funk style when he was in college and was thinking that that would really transition to a sub master in the MMA. It has not. I love wrestling, it is one of the greatest assests to a true Mixed Martial Artist, but Askren just has not put all the skills together. Perspective: Johnny Hendricks is a much better wrestler than Akren, he beat him very handly in college, but Johnny does not have to showcase it. He has some nasty hands to make you forget about the wrest
