Opening a fiendish puzzle-box
Some boxes are easy to open. This one wasn't. Is it fun to watch someone try to open a box for forty minutes? I don't know. Let's do the science.
There is a short addendum to this video, in which I reveal the location of the monogram I sought. Find it here: • The Monogram revealed!
Many thanks to the ingenious Henk van de Weerd for designing and sending me the box.

Ha! Henk here. Nicely done! That makes you the first one other than myself to open the thing :P Pity that the mechanism got disturbed by the waffle-package & it breaking, but that's my bad, Bit of clarification for the dial numbers: they had to be pointing towards other dials mirroring the sequence in which they should be pulled outward (although II & III are interchangeable) Not sure whether I put the lid on correctly in that regard though, it fits and works in any orientation. As for the monogram: that's just a small trick away from showing ;) PS: the disabled mechanism in the lid is a type of spin-release, the arms moved away when you spinned the box, but it was a bit unweildy and frankly, felt a bit over-kill. I liked to have at least some visual clue as to what can be done to progress (like the bit of brown string around the red)
You Sir, are a Fiend...... And a hell of a craftsman.
Nice box my friend.
Lovely box and a very sneaky mechanism, well done :)
a spin release would be quite effective at generating a load more crumbs
@@JackPorter definitely 😂
The moral of the story, ladies and gentlemen, is that Lloyd is tremendously clever and should be sent many more puzzles of every sort.
Y'all just want to watch him pull all his hair out!!!
@@vincentcleaver1925 Well, we are humanity. its what humanity does. lol!
"Lloyd's a very industrious fellow. I'm sure he can accomplish anything he sets his mind to."
Gimmie some days, I;m sure I've got sources on some LeMarchand Boxes somewhere...
And knitted sweaters, of every sort
_"Successfully occupying Lloyd with the fiendish box, the French quietly began the invasion of his apartment..."_
Props to the person at Customs and Excise who opened the box to check for drugs inside. Truly the unsung hero of this video. I like to imagine they just have one guy who looks at the address and says: ah, a Lindybeige parcel; a two pipe problem I think.
Yes, there is a comedy sketch in that!
I bet customs was happy to have X-ray machines. lol!
And the customs officer opened the waffles of course :)
I've just started watching but can immediately see Lindy's already thinking outside the box.
Thinking outside the box is the only option when you have to get the box open first in order to think inside of it.
Bravo
I wish I could make puns that well, unfortunately I'm simply too much of a square.
Oh well done sir
@@UngodlyFreak But as he sits thinking outside the box his thoughts are of the inside of the box. He was one with the box. He embraced his inner and outer box. He became the box.
Massively into Lindy uploading videos at nearly 3am UK time.
Especially videos that were filmed during "the hottest day of the year" and released in December.
At nearly 3AM New Year’s Day, no less
You mean your already in 2024? What's it like?
@@emeraldplayer5635In Ireland it's pretty much like 2023 but with a hangover
Maybe he can't sleep at night knowing that he still has our money he begged for to produce a graphic novel that still doesn't exist years later.
I held my breath for a while, as the last puzzle box I saw being solved led to Cenobites being released!
My thoughts exactly as I saw this!
Saaaaame. To be fair I think he would do a swell job as a cenobite he can be quite convincing.
Hope he doesn't have an uncle named Frank
Oh no! The Stroopwafels have teeth!!
My thoughts throughout the whole thing was: "No chains? No cenobites? How fiendish can it really be? What clickbait _is_ this?"
I think Lindy misunderstood the whole "unboxing on You Tube" thing.
Regular You Tubers cut cardboard, real you Tubers do Puzzle boxes.
I love how Lindy’s first instinct upon opening the puzzle is to start eating the food that’s inside, despite apparently having sat around his house for months before doing anything with it
Stroopwafels have a long shelf life, it's probably fine
@@trogdor8764 How does anyone know what their shelf-life is? In my informal experiments, I've yet to get any data beyond about 48 hours...
@@trogdor8764 by that point he probably needed some sugars too :V
I'm just surprised a cup of tea was not deployed, though I suppose you could call that using a tool.
I would eat decades old stroopwafels, they're hard to come by where I live, and I have an addiction, cultivated by my Dutch grandma.
Ah, that's a genuine Dwemer puzzle box! I know a collector in Balmora, Morrowind who would be very interested in that item, I'll try to get you two in touch if you're interesting in selling it later. They're thankfully under the value limit for Imperial regulations, so shipping shouldn't be an issue.
You have to be careful when acquiring it through... less legal means. Nowadays every scrap from the Dwemer ruins gets sold as a puzzlebox, by dumb witted people who couldn't put the cork in a bottle!
Would love to see a similar box sent to Lockpicking Lawyer.
Indeed if only to see the logical processes they go through! Everyone's experience leads to different approaches to solving the same problem.
But the LPL deals with different types of locks. Regardless, this box is much more secure than masterlock😂😂😂
If LPL were to get too stumped he may consider using a gun.
“And that’s how Lindy was sucked into another dimension to fight parademons with Merlin as his mentor”
His reaction to the A face finally turning is what makes me a subscriber of this channel
Whenever I see your videos I realize you are not just a master of history and presentation, but also a master of editing. Too much good content gets ruined by poor editing, so seeing your work is a delight!
Funny that he's a good editor, because if you pay attention he rarely ever has need to edit his videos.
Happy New Year, Lloyd! If Henk ever lets you know what the monogram was, let us know too!

My guess is, since it was full of Stroopwaffels, it's SW.
“Swelteringly hot day” “Hottest day of the year” Something tells me this wasn’t recorded recently.
Or that I was in Australia?
"My God, It's full of stars." ••• What a mind he has to have created that. I'd like to use that locking mechanism on a door -- with the inward side transparent and lit. It's good he lives in a time where there are outlets for his creativity. Shed a tear for the geniuses of the pleistocene.
The box....you opened it...we came. Nice knowing you mate.
Sandy Higgins you are obviously very knowledgeable. Lloyd's jumpers are a source of fascination for me, I have numbered them all. Well done.
I do find myself identifying the jumpers as well.
That is a beautiful "sweater" you were gifted Lloyd. And the box looks like something out of "Hellraiser;" so what is your pleasure Sir?
Now that's what you call an unboxing video!
Ba-dum-tish!
@@lindybeige 🤣
My respect to Mr. Lindybeige for trying this long and seeing it through!
This video i am gonna watch now with a cup of tea, settled down on the couch, cat on my lap, dog besides me. I love that even after all those years, more than a decade and a half i believe you still never know what Lindy is gonna upload next. And i think that is great! Warm greetings from the Netherlands🇳🇱!
I love that you picked up the clock to show off the book, and then put the clock back on the book, neither time thinking about the clock at all.
This was rather fun to watch, and very puzzling, yet delightful that Henk used that lock method which he may have heard of from you. Also, I see a Damascus blade.
Hank is a genius
I always find it fascinating when a Brit says Europe, implying that the UK is not part of if it. Those waffles are a regional speciality, probably eaten more often in the UK than on Sicily. There are no common European customs setting the UK a part from the rest.
acquiring piles of books faster than what one can read.... doesnt help reading faster but its conforting to know im not the only one Happy New year, Senor Obi-Wan Kenobeige !
Perfection, Bookshelf SELE........ Stash Exceeds Life Expectation
Happy new year.
The next time we see Lindy, it'll be as a cenobite! 🤣
You out boxed the box!
I love that he preempted us calling him out for not turning on the timer lmao
Editing Lloyd is certainly on the ball. 😃
The box! You opened it. We came.
Absolutely beautiful box and craftsmanship, very very cool
I was literally holding my head in my hands when I saw that lovely polished wooden table and those brass pin heads protruding out slightly. "I hope he puts down a table cloth or something, or you'll bugger up your table!" NOOOOOO!!!!
I swear Lindybeige is a wizard.
I swear if this is the final video from Lindybeige because he's accidentally summoned cennobites...
This is so hard to watch. I'm shouting for Lloyd to line up the numbers sequentially across the different faces. I could be wrong but it was the first thing that popped into my mind 😄
Trust me, I tried a LOT of combinations and ways of reading them. The video is not four and half hours long.
@@lindybeige Oh I believe you. I guess it's just the combination of puzzle boxes and seeing someone else try to solve one really tickles that backseat driver nerve with me quite badly. 😄 Thank you for the reply!
the box! you opened it, we came! IT IS A MEANS TO SUMMON US!
The mechanism is just sublime!🤗❤️🐝
between it taking months for lindy to open the box and additional months for him to upload I imagine its been the better part of a year since the guy sent the package
You're not far wrong!
Hammer...smash! Viola! Box open! 😊
you are a very clever man
Truly fiendish! A magnificent puzzle.
That was some high quality entertainment! Cheers.
I could tell this wood be a great puzzle
It has such sights to show you.
Spectacular! You should interview the person who made this. What a cool hobby / mechanism
So Lloyd is puzzled about how much fellow puzzlers will enjoy his puzzling over a particularly puzzling puzzle...
None of the toys i wrecked in my childhood were this much fun dismantling... totally sold 😅
You!! Sir!! Are definitely, certifiably, patient, with overtones of spatial genius and curiosity of a cat with OCD. In other words. Fun to watch and learn from. I'll peruse your blog as I've always, with relish . P.S. I would've quit after 2 hours. But then, it would be YOU!!! 😶🌫️😱👍👍🤓🤓
Editor Lloyd being a comment section better than the comment section. Love it Lloyd.
I can't think of a worse thing to attempt on the hottest day of the year. You have more patience than I Lloyd
🇺🇸Greetings from Wa USA, Long time fan here!
Thank you for letting us start the new year with one of your videos!
lol... Me, an American, nearly misunderstood LindyBeige, a Brit, at 12:23 when he said that he wanted a "torch". My first thought was flames to burn the box down, not an illumination tool. lol
1:34 You have opened the puzzle-box. And found: ANOTHER BOX! This is very exciting. Were they good? Poor table. I'd have given up long ago. I'd thought of the Egyptian lock as soon as I'd seen it.
Oh my god yes, please acquire more of these. Puzzle boxes are just immaculate entertainment
What fabulous things you get sent to you Surely the gods will sit up and pay attention to a man who receives such fabulous gifts from others
HAPPY NEWBEIGE!!!!!!! We need MOAR Lindy in 2024!
That is just magnificent!
Lindybeige! Yesss!! Now my New Year's is complete! My wife and I love puzzles, this is incredibly cool. Thank you so much!
This was a great watch! Really enjoyed seeing you problem solve and it actually had me engaged with it too. Massive credit to Henk, what a brilliant puzzle! Must of taken absolutely ages and no doubt several iterations. A sign of a true craftsman!
good to see you are well
That's magnificent! Very entertaining watching this being solved.
Well, now I'm interested in puzzle boxes. Thanks Lindy!
So amazing to see a puzzle box popping up on your channel, as I am in the process of designing a small 3d-printed one as a physical puzzle for my D&D group.
Such a beautiful mechanism 🤩
Awesome box, thanks for sharing 👍
What a ride! ❤
A treat to be perplexed along with you! Congrats!
This is the lindy content im here for!
Enjoy your deer pelt, keep em coming Lloyd!
I was relieved to see that the puzzle is available in colours that match your jumper thus keeping your well-earned 'style guru' reputation in tact. I also like the bit at the start where you twice say that you are "taking a bit of a risk",whilst repeatedly drawing the pocketknife towards your own personal person! It did feel a little like the opening scene of an episode of Casualty but it's ok,I've calmed down now. Please continue.
I'm in awe of the ingenuity and craftmanship!
Pretty sure I saw a movie about this.
I rate this 6 out of 10 beige shirts.
What a contraption! Very clever engineering.
What a puzzle, very impressive! And your patience is as well! Wishing you a beautiful and healthy 2024, filled with love, joy and laughter! ❤🤗
Happy new year fella and thank you for sharing this 🦥🥳
Oh my Buddha, That was painfully interesting to watch .... oooz a smart cookie den ; )
Happy new year everyone
Your persistence is admirable.
Happy New Year to you and yours! I enjoyed the challenge with you! I was obsessed with finding the monogram thru the whole thing, because I thought it was a clue to the combination!
Outside of a puzzle-box, a book is man's best friend...
Inside, there is a dog?
Thank you Lindy!
Watch every bit of it and it waa tremendously entertaining to watch a grown man break his brain over a wooden box. 10/10!
Look, I don't know how Lloyd got me to stick around his channel for this very long and yet, still manage to pull me in. For crying out loud, he made a video talking about a famous medieval bed and I found that fascinating! This is one of those videos that yet still pulls me in and I even made a surprised sound along with Lloyd when a certain dial finally moved. Bravo Lindy, thank you so much for all the fascinating content you've done till now. And a Happy New Year to you.
Happy and successful new year, Lindy!
Britain's answer to "Mr. Puzzle", at last! 😎
Fantastic video as always!
Very much enjoyed this! ❤💜❤
I'm thinking the numbers weren't a red herring but rather referred to the 6 faces of the cube. 5 being the top face, 6 being the bottom and 1-4 being the sides with the dials. Align the numbers to their respective faces and the top dial reveals the final puzzle. It's a clever puzzle box but I think it would have benefited greatly from a second box within it, a liner if you will, to contain the contents and keep them from interfering with the mechanism.
you got it right mate :), Would also have benefited from an internal box, but I was in a lazy mood at that point & kind of stuck on how leave enough space for the lid- mechanism to work while including such a secondary box, en-fin, mistakes were made; but luckily the mechanism worked for the most part.
@@HevadeWe Thanks for confirming! Even as it was it's impressive. Was this your own design?
@@siggyincr7447 Thank you! mostly, yes, I dove into a little puzzle-rabbit hole after seeing the door-video from LLoyd, but aside from the Egyptian lock system and the gravity based unlocking (although the mechanism for the gravity system is custom also), this thing is entirely my own design, was quite fun, Initially I had a different design, but that took up way too much space in the box (obviously it's more fun to be able to put something inside of it, even if it crumbles :P )
Well done sir!
Love to see the little curls of wood that flex without mechanical hinges and things. I personally really love those kind of biscuits shown.
What a laugh . Thats a great box . My son would love this . Great stream mate and well done . 👍👍👍👍👍
OH and I love seeing those real-life history videos. It’s so cool watching you show off real historical sites. Thanks for all the wonderful content!!!!!!
