Michael had a very difficult childhood in Hartlepool, England. His dad wasn't around when he was young -- and then when Michael was 17, just after they'd rekindled their relationship, his dad passed away. Hearing his father say he was proud of Michael for singing left a lasting impression on him and drove him to audition for IDOL.

Wow!!!!! Im in tears mate. From the uk here.. a southern fairy but lived in leeds and hull for 5 years with work. Gave me a whole new outlook. Im sorry to hear hoe much you went through growing up, but its helped to produce a miracle of a voice and such a raw and emotional performance. Im sure your dad would be so proud. This brought back so many memories for me, pops spent his life on the bottle. The last 2 years of his life he became my friend. he became sober. then he left for good. RIP pops. you did your pops proud Sir Rice.
