  • I wonder what it must've been like.. Being a Frenchman in the 19th century. For impressionist painting and impressionist composing to match up so seamlessly, there must've been a shared underlying emotion washing through all of French society. Somber and melancholic, yet at peace and even hopeful.

    • Well, to be realistic, they were living what we would now consider the old "life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short" (Hobbes). Think of all the wonderful literature, music, and art we have today from tens of thousands of unique cultures, all available on the small, handheld device you are using right now. Globalization is the same "shared underlying emotion" to us, humanity, as impressionism was to the bourgeois, intellectual Frenchmen in the 19th century. And it is much more wonderful! We can enjoy centuries-old art right now and immerse ourselves in that period-for almost every single era in recorded human history. The Frenchmen could not do that. I do totally get your longing for experiencing life in a different century, in a different country, even a different person, though. We call that nonexistent nostalgia Sehnsucht (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sehnsucht) historic nostalgia, or to put into more harsh terms, generational dysphoria, and it is certainly an amazing thing. Oh how I wish I could travel to worlds so different from mine I can hardly recognize a single thing. But let's take respite in the fact that we can, even for a moment, relive the same awe kings, queens, nobles, and peasants of centuries past felt when they too read Shakespeare's plays, listened to Beethoven's works, and saw Raphael's paintings for the first time.

It's like I find peace in his art. And visiting his "universe" was one of my favorite childhood memories. If you get the chance to visit his house and his beautiful garden, I'm telling you, it's really worth it.

  • I get a very odd feeling from this period of history, it's simultaneously modern and old, at the very cusp of what I can relate to as a person. Not so old that society is completely different, but not quite modern enough that it is comparable to the industrial society of the early 1900's. An almost mystical time.

  • There is privilege in how I find beauty in humanity, inside the works of master artisans across history, their paintings captivating my imagination in much the same way music does; with rhythm, harmony and spirit bursting from every piece, from hip hop to blues, from Monet to My fathers work, but beauty does not end there. I find beauty in the faces of women, the style of architecture and planning; I find beauty in good conversations, the tastes of food and the feeling of wind. Such things make that which is ugly, beautiful, the intricacies of a decomposing corpse, how systems collide atop of systems to return what was once dirt to what it shall become again, dirt. To what end am I blessed to think such beautiful thoughts?

    @pixelatedbishop@pixelatedbishop2 жыл бұрын

  • I had plans to go to the art institute in Chicago with someone a few years ago, but they didn't end up coming with, so I went by myself. I ended up spending my entire time there looking at the Impressionist paintings, listening to piano pieces by Debussy and Ravel since it only seemed appropriate lol. Une barque sur l'ocean was one of the pieces I listened to when I saw Cliff walk at Pourville (the second to last painting in the video). That was the day when I fell in love with impressionism and began to actually appreciate classical piano as a true genre of music filled with wonder and reverie, and not the genre of "old, dead people music". I currently have a canvas of Cliff walk at Pourville hung up in my room right above where my piano is.

  • This is an absolutely beautiful playlist, accompanied with wonderful paintings as well. The song "five pieces for piano, no. 5: granen (sibelius)" instantly brought me to tears. I've never heard that song before, and now it is my favorite. Thank you so much 😇

    • That's actually my rendition of the astonishingly beautiful work of Sibelius. Appreciated mate! Wish the guy who uploaded this video actually asked before using my track :) Dropping some other pretty sweet early 20th century french repertoire soon on my channel, you could come and check it out!

    • At the time that the Impressionists were painting ,many art schools did not this they were gorgeous. And many impressionistic painters, found it very difficult to display their paintings . Many only became popular after they died , or were promoted by Anerican interests.

  • I'm just a 35 year old full time mum sitting in the kitchen listening to this, eating her treat of the day - halva, while her two kids are somewhere in the house having screen time. You don't have to know music to enjoy music. That's comforting to me.
