China's Unmarried 'Leftover' Women

Since the socialist revolution, the rights of Chinese women have been written into the country's constitution. Under Mao, unprecedented numbers of women joined the workforce and they were celebrated as ""iron girls.""
But now, China is home to a fifth of the world’s women whose status as equals is dwindling. Domestic violence rates in the country have soared, marital rape is not considered a crime, those who dare to call themselves feminist activists are being detained by the government, and unmarried women older than 27 are commonly referred to as ""leftover women.""
To find out what lies behind the drastic shift in women’s social status in China, we track down feminist scholar and ""iron girl"" Wang Zheng and spend a day with one of China’s so-called leftover women. We also explore the extremes of China's wedding industry and its defectors before meeting Wei Tingting, one of the five women's rights activists detained for trying to start a campaign against sexual harassment on public transportation.

    • Female infanticide was something they took for granted, unfortunately. My grandma told of how her grandma crushed her newborn baby granddaughter with a stool while the parents watched on, too afraid to say anything. This was way before the one child policy (my grandma's 90). It's been done for centuries. The way women were viewed in China pre cultural revolution was similar to how women are viewed in rural India or Saudi Arabia these days. It was practically Sharia law with no god. There were honour killings (if you committed adultery, they drowned you in a pig cage). Girls were often sold into slavery (my other grandma was sold into slavery as a child and married a guy who was 40 years her senior to be a a sister wife/baby maker just to get some financial stability) and polygamy was very normal. China has always had a high percentage of unmarried men because the rich men had multiple wives and concubines and there has always been female infanticide.

I was just rejected by all boys i was in love with. And the older you become the harder to deal with rejection. I guess I've just broken. I do not have any hard feelings against men and do not blame other people in my failure. In the end i had psychological problems in childhood and youth and now I've got consequences. It's like natural selection in action. I can't say that I feel miserable all the time. Rather sometimes when i remember those guys i feel sad. It's like when you remember spring during the winter 🌿 As for me it's better to get married and have children earlier cause it's aligned with natural flow of life, cause these young feelings are so honest and genuine, without impurity of bitterness and hidden search for benefits... 🌿 A rose will bloom, it then will fade.

Two- you chose relationships doomed to end, as in you didn't see them working out in your head in the first place. Both cases are like what you described- a rose that blooms for a short while and then fades. It's just passion that dies out. You're mature and you need a guy who has that maturity. So change the way you approach guys. Ask a good friend or family to set you up. Meet more people by living a fulfilling life. But listen, You only got one life. You can find love. You're still really young. Just don't put yourself down in the guise of trying to better yourself, cause this world will tear you apart for no reason. Even after you get married happily ever and have everything perfectly great in your life. So when you're struggling, you are the only one who can fight for yourself. And well, I'm cheering you on too!

The intentions are directed straight towards marriage and even the process of spending time to get to know each other to seek the fit could be criticized as “not taking things seriously”. • Wish this documentary had Chinese subtitles so I can send it to my parents. They each sent me a video of a woman (different women in each video) saying how she regrets never getting married. The women in those videos were probably around 40+ years old. In my mind, they can still get married if they wanted to, it's never too late to get married if you find someone who's right for you. They don't even realize that's propaganda meant to brainwash people. My mom keeps saying our (younger people's) way of thinking is skewed and says that if I don't get married and don't have kids, I'll be all alone when I'm old. I'd rather be alone than to be with someone who isn't right for me and makes me miserable. And it's not like people who get married and have kids don't end up all alone when they're old as well. But my parents just don't agree and don't understand. Also, it's so hypocritical to call older unmarried women "left over women" because there are way more men who can't find wives and some of them even have to resort to buying their wives through human trafficking. It's infuriating. And the criteria of a "desirable partner" is even more favorable for men, because you will always get older, but you'll never get younger. Even nowadays with the advantage of science, women in China are the first ones to be blamed for a couple's infertility and they even get blamed if they don't birth a son instead of a daughter. As if it wasn't the sperm that determines the gender.

No one is saying you should marry someone who is an abusive arsehole or a complete loser like me, 😅, but don't set yourself up mentally to avoid the prospect of settling down. I have seen several ageing career oriented women in my own family who are very isolated or died alone without children. It's never a cute or content way to go out. People with children and spouses have significantly higher quality of later life experience. Don't believe the individualistic Western hype.

I'm sure he/she's in a different headspace than what you are going through. There are studies about family, friends being important for a long life. But there are also TONS of sad young women suffering and dying, after getting abused by their husbands. That shit happens too. Way too much. Talk about fear for their lives and being force to satisfy somebody else by getting married. But otherwise, power to you! I hope that you can get out of the shitty crap of being tormented by your family for not wanting to settle and lower your standards, just for them. If the girls have worked and studied hard, then they deserve to have standards for guys to match up to them. I have standards as a guy. 🤷‍♂ I'd avoid a girl who's easy. The most important thing, is that you find someone you want to be with for the rest of your life. I hope you meet a great dude, fall in love and marry him cause you want to share the rest of your life with him. Dont let your parents ruin your wish to connect, meet, date or love. They stay out of the picture, or otherwise help you get the kind of guy you like☺. Period.

Hence, even in this case, when they had to keep only one child, the girl children were the first to be sacrificed. Men are seen as important, so they are sent to wars, to protect the country, while women, are seen as useless, so they just become another object for exchange, through marriage, to become the background against the man, as a wife, cooking, cleaning, serving him, so he can do all the important tasks. • @@luongcamtu875 She DOES speak English VERY well. She is fluent. She has an accent that may be hard to follow for people. I could understand her just fine. You have to actively listen, but she is very good and qualified to teach people English IN CHINA. She wouldn't teach Hispanic people English bc she doesn't have their accent and it would be extremely difficult for them to follow.

    • @@MBrocroyal1 Speaking competently is one thing. To speak well you speak it in a proper accent in this case either British or American. If you can speak like a native from one of these countries then one can say you speak the language well.

      @JohnDoe-gn4xj@JohnDoe-gn4xj4 жыл бұрын
    • @@JohnDoe-gn4xj i don't agree. Almost no foreigners can speak well by that definition. Most will retain the accent from their native country but speak english fluently. Pronunciation is important but only until native speakers can understand you. A foreigner continuing their education of the english language until they get the exact accent that we speak with is great! And shows even better english BUT if they don't do that, it doesn't make them have bad english. You can't become extra fluent. Learning a language is learning vocab, grammar, and basic pronunciation. Once youre fluent, youre fluent. Once natives can understand them and they've got the vocab and grammar pretty much down, they are fluent and speak GREAT english, like the girl in the video. If accents matter so much, i can't understand some native speakers in America because of their accents. Are they bad at english now bc they don't have the basic accent (which what even is that? There are so many sub accents, england, ireland, Australia etc included) Once you're fluent, you're fluent.

    • Wren Linnet men age like wine while women age like milk is a great way to put it. If you’re suggesting men and women age equally, then that is not supported by modern science. Men can have children well into their late years, while women become less fertile and make for having a child much more dangerous in their 30’s. While men have acquired more resources to support the family while she is with child. You can’t fight biology or evolution...even though feminism sounds cool.
