"When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?" is the debut studio album by American singer-songwriter Billie Eilish produced by her brother and frequent collaborator Finneas O'Connell. Released in 2019, the album showcases Eilish's dark and introspective style, blending elements of pop, electropop, and alternative music. With haunting lyrics and atmospheric production, the album explores themes of mental health, love, and self-discovery. Eilish's distinctive vocals, combined with her raw and vulnerable songwriting, create a captivating and thought-provoking listening experience that resonates with a wide audience.

She was at the hotel when she woke up from that suicidal dream and wrote a song about it but Finneas wouldn’t help her finish more songs about suicidal thoughts until over a year later when they shifted the meaning of the song to their relationship. But from what I understand listen before I go came up before that.

  • I wrote an entire 5 page essay for an English class on "xanny" and its sister song "when the parties over" which borh follow the story line of her first boyfriend (rapper/actor 7:AMP) who dated her in 2018 when he was 21 and she was only 16. (This story was also continued in other songs like TV, Lost Cause, Your Power, Happier Than Ever) Xanny is the semi-fictional story of someone pressured into taking drugs witnessing an overdose. In the background of Xanny you can hear 2 girls frantically checking if someone is still breathing right after the first chorus. Billie hasn't stated about this being based on a real thing she saw but it dose foreshadow "not dying by mistake" later in the song. In Xanny she criticizes his friends and worries about her bf who lives in Silver Lake (the real area where 7:AMP lived) the chorus/vocal affect along with her sluring her words are both ment to be a audible cue to her/the narrator being high. The melancholy and stripped ending accurs after she sobers up right *when the party is over*. When the partys over is a straightforward song about both a literal and metaphorical party that she ended up accepting that she was emotionally taken advantage of by him, that she's gonna lose him (either emotionally or from OD like in xanny) and she's crying when she's coming home all alone (either she emotionally left him or he was too wasted to drive her home) There's alot more to say about both songs but that's the basic overview and context to some of billie's more personal songs.

  • ok but when you think about it, 8 is perfect for the themes of the album. you get so used to the dark sounds from the beginning that hearing more light and carefree instrumentation is jarring. when you're in a dark place, it's so hard to get out of it that anything that feels positive throws you off. it makes you wonder when the shoe is going to drop. darkness becomes comfortable if you've spent enough time in it, like how light hurts your eyes after enough time without it. 8 is a great representation of that feeling in my opinion

  • This album came out when I was high school during the absolute worst year of my life and my only hobby was to listen to it and cry all the time. It was fun to re-experience the album through you and to hear it again years later from a place of safety.

  • This album came out when I was 17 and I love every single song. I was in a dark place and when the party's over, i love you and listen before i go came out, and i was just so dead and crying and sad. it helped me til this day. seeing billie last year and hearing everything live is just the peak of my life.

  • This album was released in such a critical year of my life. That time was and still is the most nostalgic era for me, especially the music I listened to. Listening to this album makes me want to cry in the best way. This genuinely shaped my life.
