Reading minds through body language | Lynne Franklin | TEDxNaperville

Can you read someone’s mind by looking at them? Almost. Lynne Franklin teaches you how to connect with 3 types of people by understanding how their bodies communicate. After a boy threatened to kill her with a machete, Lynne Franklin decided to learn everything she could about persuasion. She became a neuroscience nerd, studying how the brain works and how to build rapport with people. She has since worked with organizations to use persuasive communication to increase their performance, productivity, and profit, and published a book about her personal research called Getting Others to Do What You Want. In addition to her marketing and consulting work, Lynne is a member of the National Speakers Association and President-elect of its Illinois chapter. • LOOKER - strong stance - lots of eye contact - appearance matters -well dressed - forehead wrinkles from looking up lots when remembering ideas - shoulder tension - remembers from images - reciprocate eye contact (not looking, not at tentative) - give words with visual components (i see, picture this) LISTENER - thinks in words and sounds - not well dressed - appearance not as important - down to the left (remembering what you’ve heard) - head in hand telephone posture - mumbles to self, thinking in words and sounds - pen clicker (sounds) - not lots of eye contact, look and then look away - use auditory words (lets talk this over, sounds good) TOUCHER - brain thinks in feelings and tactile - ready to hug - dressed for comfort - full lips - tendency to lean in, decrease physical space - reach out to touch arm in conversation - look down, remembering something you’ve felt - let them touch you - if not comfortable, stick out hand, any point of contact - use language that has a feeling or tactile (reach out to me) pay attention to body language present ideas that they will understand DONT CHANGE STYLE BUT language and body listen or look at the words they’re using (feeling, auditory, visual)

    • I find my memories to be extremely accurate. However, I see no images nor feel emotions. Perhaps my memories are orientated more around the technical aspects of the memory and your memories are more orientated around the emotional aspect of the memory. Strangely, I never dream with humans, either. All my dreams have overcast skies, subdued lighting whether indoors or outdoors, no humans, everything quiet, and nothing is locked or blocked from my access. Perhaps I need help.

Only to the point that it raises your understanding to understand what it hasn’t yet. At no time when reading people, are they stuck being what you’re thinking. That’s all you, being your perception.

Idk) But anyways, I respect people who can't do eye contact. I don't think people can actually read body language... I haven't watched this video. I'm concerned that it even exists. Because of ableism, and the stigmatizing of mental conditions. It's not morally wrong to not do eye contact, and people should just accept that. It's pure ableism to discriminate against that.

  • This is trying to classify all people in just three extremely distinct categories. It the reality (imo) is that you’re an hybrid of these types, which means that there are MANY more types. In fact, I buy clothes that look good (as long as they’re not uncomfortable) but end up using the most comfortable ones the most; I remember with images and feelings/sensations; I sometimes mumble to myself. The list goes on, but it just goes to show that you can’t put people in a box

  • After watching this video I started to watch random ted talks, and try to find out who is a listener, a toucher and a looker, and I found out a cool thing: the listener moves his head side to side - so his hearing range grows bigger. The looker takes his body back and up- so his view field grows wider, and the toucher do the opposite things- he takes his body down and front so there is a better chance to touch

I have to actually looked down or away from the person and listen to what they say to process it. Even at work, when my boss gives me an instruction, I have to repeat it back to him in a low voice so I can even process what he already said.

  • Observing the body language can tell a lot about the particular individual during conversations. I find that there are some great points raised in the video. Most people don't pay attention to body language at all, and can easily fall into one of the 3 categories mentioned in the video. In my opinion, if you start caring for your body language, you will become more confident and convincing for others. It is important not to give away your true opinions and thoughts with your body.

    • You’ll still notice 2 or 1 which is more dominant. Some people are never touchey, other people join two things at once. It’s a mix. The less mixed people are, the harder it is to connect with them. That’s why this is useful. I had a friend’s dad I wanted to create rapport with, he was definitely a feeler and when I talked to him I was elbow to elbow and we laughed a lot heads bowed in each other’s direction. My nephew can’t stand it if I have my eyes on my phone while we’re together, he’s a looker more than anything. In teaching him spirituality I was saying: do you think such a thing as a God principle exists? And I didn’t get much and then I said, imagine we’re in a video game where humans exist, can you envision what the God Principle could be like in this video game? And I got so much stuff from him. My niece is a mixture of a feeler and a listener. I can have my eyes on a screen or a book and be touching her and she feels we’ve connected. When we talk about how things went in a problem area she goes directly to what she felt and gets overwhelmed and then I ask her specifically to remember what was said and she goes there and calms down her feelings enough to plan how to address the problem with words and linguistic ideas. I am a mixture of the 3 as we all are but definitely I’m more looker and feeler than a listener. When solving through problems I now envision what that could look like in an image kind of way and from there I build a strategy, revisiting that image and pulling details from it as if it were a map. Everyone is all three but the question is how can you use this information to connect better with yourself or others.

  • The concept of reading one's mind by just looking at them has always fascinated me. Personally, I myself, try to do that in day-to-day life, though this is done at a common-sense level that is inclusive of body-language as it plays a major role in it. This video gave me some defined and well structed ideas and concepts for judging mind, by body language in particular. After watching this video I started to observe the people around me and try to differentiate between these three categories looker, listener and toucher and being aware of looker because he have a good memory in remembering it like a movie and also being aware of listener because they are very good in what peoples are said and also being aware of toucher because they are very good in understanding feeling of human. Talking about my own experience with the activity as discussed in the video, I'm definitely a toucher or in other word, kinesthetic. Because I had taken a test before (people can have more than one of the type) and it's kind of hard to be a toucher bcause you want to touch something without realising it. It's sometimes makes people uncomfortable. Overall, this is must watch video for those want a greater insight to ways of reading mind through body language!

I mumble or plain out speak to myself, i demand eye contact during conversation and i naturally read people and treat them accordingly to how well the recieve and put off signals. • It's a fantastic lecture related to reading minds of the people through their body language..There are three models of body language according to Lynne Franklin. The first one is lookers. A looker's brain thinks in pictures and images. They stand tall with good poster and have a good appearance. They mostly have wrinkles on their forehead as they think oftenly looking upwards. They give you lot of eye contact. In order to build rapport with them, one should make eye contact and use words which have visual component. But, I have seen persons who are lookers who bend a while standing and don't have any wrinkles on forehead. Second type of persons are listeners. Their mind thinks in words and sounds. They don't give much preference to appearance and they look on to the left side when they remember something they heard. I have observed so many listeners who always on the right when remembering something . And last type of people are touchers whose brain think in feelings. Their characteristics are , they are ready to hug a person if they meet him for first time. They wear dress which are comfortable rather than stylish. I oppose the point. I have a friend who is a toucher. He dresses to look stylish rather than having comfort. Lynne Franklin said to know to which category we belong to we can know by imagining a situation i.e whether we remember in pictures or in words or feelings. I imagined a situation like movie at the same time with some words as well. So, I feel we can't say whether a person is looker or listener or toucher just by the way they imagine.

  • Body language is an important aspect of nonverbal communication that can reveal a lot about a person's thoughts and feelings. Body language alone cannot read people's minds, but it can provide insight into their emotional states and intentions. Facial expressions, gestures, and postures can be used to interpret a person's mood and engagement in conversation. However, body language can also be influenced by cultural and individual differences, so it is important to consider several factors when interpreting non-verbal cues. Ultimately, body language can give clues about a person's thoughts and feelings, but it should only be viewed as part of the overall communication picture.
