  • Gel pens were really popular when I was a young teen in the late 90's early 2000's. Me and all my friends had them to write notes back and forth to eachother, cuz no one had cell phones. My favorite ones were the pastels and the ones with more than one color in one pen and can't forget the glitter/shimmer ink, we'd use them on black paper. Brings back fond memories of youth :) A time when kids didn't have cell phones and no adult I knew had one either. So, we wrote notes with pretty pens.

  • I like gel pens but I am surprised nobody is talking about the problems that come with them! They leak. They dry out. You don't know when you buy one or a set if or whether they are old or new stock and how long they will last before one day you start to draw and find out you can't use a pen and it still has lots of ink there! And yes, I always close them tight. I quit buying all but the Gelly Roll clear stardust and white because I got so frustrated about losing money when they were dry or leaked. Sorry so long-just didn't hear anyone address this. Surely I'm not the only one who has purchased a 8 or 48 set and have many not work even from the start! (BTW-new to channel-watching a lot of your videos! You do a good job at explaining, showing and informing! Congrats! Thank you for sharing your time, talent and knowledge!

About your issues with white, I don’t color yet, but I do use white gel pen in my art and I highly recommend the Sakura White Gelly Roll, they have 3 sizes. And I really love the Signo and Signo Angelic for white as well. The Angelic is super fine and both Signos make a nice continuous line. Also Sakuras gold is really awesome too.

  • I have purchased a set of no name 100 gel pen refills from eBay. There are no duplicates & there is a small cap on the tip, but are not sealed at the other end. I have been super impressed. I use them without putting them into a gel pen barrel & they work great without being sealed. There might be 5 pens out of the 100 that are not fantastic. They even have a decent range of browns & neutrals which is great for more of a nature based colouring effect.

  • i have the same set from cosco with the stadium display, and im really happy with them! a couple things ive learned with pens in general, not sure if they apply to gel pens as well: if theyre having difficulty writing, try warming up the ink by taking it out and trying to warm it up, either by rubbing them between your hands or warm water. you can also try blowing on the end. ive never had a problem with harming the pen or having them dry out by taking them apart, so,, i also almost always have a tester sheet, just to scribble on in case i need to test a color or how the gel pen looks on that particular kind of paper, ESPECIALLY with coloring books since paper thickness and quality tends to vary

I too like when they are juicy as I use them for highlights or tiny places on pages. They are just the best in my opinion. I just use them and set my page aside for a bit so it can dry.

I have pencils, markers from cheap to OMG did I really pay that much, and have wanted gel pens to mix things up in my coloring, I have been reading and researching and trying to figure what to get and your video has given me the most information to date. Basically grab a bunch don't necessarily go with the $$$ over the cheaper and your going to have to replace them often so it makes sense to grab all types and try them out. • Best white gel pen by far is the Signo Uniball. These pens are amazing...and I was just about to give up on white gel pens, having tried just about every brand on the market. These are by far quality writing instruments. I do love the Sakura Gelli Roll pens...but just the glitter, metallic and black glaze. I did have a Gelli Roll gold that I was just about to toss in the bin after trying everything "they" recommended to get it going again. ("they" don't know what they're talking about! lol) The pen was almost full and I was livid. So...I took the pen apart, and with my needlenose pliers pulled off the silver tip. I took a pin and popped out the little silver "ball"(that was fun) and soaked them both in 91% rubbing alcohol. Although it was very hard to get the pen back together, when I did...it worked again. So much for the suction...right? That being said...I don't think I would ever go through that again. I would rather spend the $1.69 for a new pen. What we artists go through....lol. God Bless....I love your videos!

So far I'm using Shuttle Art gel pens and I have used the same pack for over 3 years. I have not had any issues and they also have the best white gel pen i have ever used. Also with the cheap gel pens if they don't write i used to just wet my finger and run the tip of the pen over my finger a couple times and it would start writing i have never had it not work. Just some helpful hints.

They are designed with mixed media artist in mind just for highlighting, doodling etc. The white is pretty bright. Also I have had the problem before with white pens creating grove down the middle with using them. I discovered that if you use a lighter touch it really makes a difference. The lighter hand the better with white pens in general has been my experience.

I was working for an office products company at the time. They have 2 large sets available, one is 64 pens and the other is a set of 74. I color mostly with colored pencils, with Staedtler being my favorite so far, although I would love a set off Polychromos.

  • I store my pens horizontally but sometimes they leak. Also, when they start becoming patchy, i blow in the end and see the ink moving to close up the gap. So mine are not all blocked at the end. Maybe they are the ones that leak! Great video.

  • Your great video -- thank you! -- was posted thousands of years ago now, 😉 so you have almost surely sussed this out by now, but just in case: The Uniball 207s (the click pen, for which you had questions about the gel status of the ink) are, in my experience, "gel-lish" - meaning that I think it's actually a hybrid formula, because, if I'm remembering a-rights, they advertise it as secure ink and quick-drying for lefties. Nonetheless, I've been able to blend this ink, wth a little more work than usual ... compare it, maybe, to the "classic" gels that have ink that is richly colored and translucent in the barrel - perhaps a tad harder to blend, etc., than those. You might even want to step up the blend with an assist from a (mostly dry) waterbrush or a touch of glycerin. But imho, worth it because of what the 207s offer uniquely: the "regular" green and blue are distinct colors that other brands don't match. The purple is very dark, but also contrasts with usual brands, In addition, the 207s include a line of colored dark inks - colors blended with black, to produce super-deep intense colors: red-black (deep maroon), green-black (deep forest), purple-black, brown-black and blue-black. Terrific options for deep contrasts, and fun to write with as well. And surprise good news: I've had some of my 207s for years, literally, and they have yet to dry out! Looks like the clicker covers the need for a cap! The only thing I've really seen that bears looking out for is this: while there are Uni-ball Signo 207 gel pens with pink ink, there is also a breast cancer awareness 207, which has a pink body, but black ink. Great cause, but not a pen for coloring- just writing. 😊 Hope this helps.

  • There are actually 100 colors in the set, well let me specify. Although there may be two blues with the same color one will have glitter, therefore making it a new color. It may look like it's the same at first, but when it dries you can tell the difference. So if your coloring a large area with one color and it happens to run out you will be able to notice it right away. But like most pens be it gel of otherwise it's hard to really run out of ink until you have colored many of pages.

  • I've done the tap to get the ink flowing again but I would disagree that the barrel is vacuum sealed because i have several gel pens that even have a manufactures hole on the end of the barrel and they still work fine. the vacuum seal would be in the ink tube i think and that's why they have that blob of clear gel or sometimes another type of object inserted into the tube. great video

  • For white, I like gelly roll the best. I also have the clear glitter pen and love it. If you like texture, the glaze pens are awesome. I only have the black, but I have the clear on my wish list. I mostly use mine for cards, so the little bit of dimension is great for pupils of eyes on cute little critters. I have the signo uniball, which is also good on dark cardstock. Lots of cardmakers swear by it, but I prefer my gelly roll. It kind of depends on how I want to use it. One is slightly thicker and gives a bolder line, so it's better for writing. Hope this helps.

  • Okay there's so many videos about how to store your gel pens. But I have been looking for days and can't find any information on how to store my pen refills. Could you please help me with this do I store them the same as the pens? With their tips down? Laying down? Inside of a Ziploc baggie? will the ink dry out if it's not in a closed container? What happens if I lose one of the little caps? And some of the blue rubber pieces fell out of my little caps are they going to dry out? Please help!!!

  • Hello, I am new to coloring for adults and just purchased a set of the 74 Gelly Roll pens. I like to organize my coloring supplies and when I received my pens they were all jumbled up in the sectioned box which is very nice quality wise. Do you know where I can get a guide that would tell me by sight how to categorize each pen so that I can organize them? I know the pens are marked but it is not easy to understand the various symbols or numbers on them and I could use a guide.

  • The Lolliz brand have pastels and they come out really thick and I have a huge problem with smearing lol So if you want pastels to do your technique with (which I have already watched and love by the way) Lolliz is the brand to go to for those. I have the 70 count and there are variegated pastels and regular pastels in it and the ink flows really well in them and the ink comes out enough to where they smear. Try them, I don't think you will be disappointed. Thanks for this video. I am like you, I buy so many different types lol I tend to love the cheaper sets more than the expensive sets. I have 1 gelly roll color. I got the white in the Sakura Gelly Roll and there are 3 of them and I have only used them once. For some reason I can hardly get my ink to come out. It sucks! I need a Signo really bad lol But thanks again for this awesome video :D The Lolliz has a white and so does Elite Art brand.
