In this video I compare the Nakamichi Dragon, Sonos + Era 300 + Sonos Sub (G3), Samsung Q990C, and Sony HTA9 w/ SW5. I review feature high and lowlights and compare sound performance.
Correction: 00:34 Sonos Bundle Price is $2256 (not $1400) wishful thinking I guess.

I personally think that over a 2000 budget, you can already buy a “true” home cinema system with a good receiver and quality speakers. As a solution before I can buy the system of my dream, samsung has done an awsome job.

  • Your soundbar videos have been excellent - led me to the HTA9. Came from a 11.2 setup. Wanted a ht in a box without a central sound bar. Very happy with it for movies / tv. I use a dedicated 2channel rig for music. It doesn’t go that deep, but i was surprised it could play the bass drop at start of edge of tomorrow. Doesn’t rattle the house like my dual Svs did but … Not having 11 channels of speaker wire running around the open concept living room, makes wife happy. I can’t get over how good the surround / Atmos sounds for four small speakers. Thanks!

Until an updated newer version comes out, the dragon will be the better option. Since I am already invested, it makes sense to wait a little for the hopefully new ARC. Great content.

      @neverenoughtech@neverenoughtech5 ай бұрын
    • Technically Sonos could add 2 Era 300 for the front left and right surround with software updates, the problem is how many people will buy it? As the cost will go over 4200 Dollars?? Probably only few people not so many to justify an extra software investment. But I do like the idea of 2Era 300 front and I will probably buy the extra 2 more pairs next year and get with little settings volume down for Era as I like exploring the edge top surround sound

  • Andrew Robinson sold me the HT-A9 2 years ago with the SW5 sub. Super happy. Already had a A80J with the whole screen being a speaker for the center channel. Super happy, it's a smallish room in the basement if it fills the room perfectly. The soundstage, the 360 feature is superb. Not the most precise audio setup, but for the price I'm really happy. I wanted a system the would fill all the space around me (up down, front rear, left right). My kids are looking behind sometimes as the feel being within the action. Star wars / space stuff is awesome on this.

  • No disconnect issues here on the Q990C. I had a Polk 5.1 system for many years and swapped it to this. I will say, this review is spot on. The sub sounds good and won't disappoint normal people. It's very well integrated into the system and provides good, clean bass. I will say for the surrounds, the further you can get them back, the better your experience will be. My couch is about 18in fron the back wall. Oddly, with my 5.1 system, the surrounds were more diffused and less localized in my setup. If I sit in front of my couch, the Q990C surrounds sounds very good from a spatial audio perspective. I hate room constraints. The front sound is a bit compressed, which can be overcome with volume, but the wife approval factor goes down as volume has to go up to compensate. Ill keep this for a while, until bars get better

  • I have owned Samsung q990c (not anymore), Sony ht a9 + sw5 and Sennheiser Ambeo max + Dali c8 d. Samsung q990c: best bang for the buck ration since you can find it for as low as $900. The feel is not very premium, the sub is somewhat light and will distort at higher leves. Rear speakers are not loud enough to deliver any significant 3D effect. The good point is that is gets really loud, it just sounds a bit compressed in comparison to some more expensive options out there. One strange thing, the system never took me through room calibration steps... It is a good system if you are on a budget, it will not dissapoint. Sony ht a9: very premium build, sw5 feels heavy and reassuring. It should, considering the price. Bass performance is awesome imho. The level of 3D reprojection and soundstage is very good. It is really orientated towards theatrical experience, there is no real sound eq you can play with, it is voiced for movies and 3D bubble in which you are immersed instantly. It is so much fun. If you approach it fro audiophile perspective, however, you might be dissapointed as it sounds just a bit harsh, not as full. This does not mean that it is bad for music, not at all, there are just better options out there. I have never missed a centre, phantom center is awesome. If you have a suitable Sony TV, you can connect the black box to ''s centre'' to use TV speakers for that. And no, even though this is a standard 3.5mm jack, you can not connect any other speaker to it to serve as a centre, no sound will cone through. Believe me, I have tryed. One more thing about ht a9 - SW5 is the only sub to get and it should not be optional. There is a night and day difference w/wo a sub. Internal mini subs can not give you a cinematic rumble which is much needed for a good theatrical experience. Sennheiser Ambeo max: This one is like a refined piece of tehc, that always puts a smile on my face. There is nothing cheap on this machine. It is a work of art. It is heavy, sturdy and reassuring. The Sennheiser's sound optimization and room calibration is really on another level. You calibrate the bar with a special calibration tool that cones in the box and it is no joke. They seem to take this part very seriously. The 3D reprojection is very good due to exellent Sennheiser's software magic. But only up to 180 degrees. Do not expect 360 degree sound like with Sony ht a9 as there are no (not even optional) rear speakers. No amount of reflections can adequately substitute for a physical rear sound source. This soundbar is much more audiophile orientated, there are 2 apps by which you can control the sound profile. The audio quality is excepional for music. I would say the system is on par or better that what I get with any of my higher end bookshelf speakers. There is a wired connection for a subwoofer which means you can hook up ANY active sub to it. In this way you can pair it with any good $500+ sub you might already have at home to even outperform the Dragon in sub section. Again, as with Sony, subwoofer is a must. Internal mini subs will not cut is...not even close.

    • Thanks for your insightful comparison! One question about the q990c rear speakers: you said that they aren't loud enough to produce surround effects, can't that be addressed by increasing their individual volumes (relative to the front channels) via the SmartThings app?

Dialogue took a minor hit, but everything else was amplified. I immediately noticed the difference when watching Infinity War during the intro scene where Thanos places the Space Stone on the Infinity Gauntlet. The shockwave that follows sounded great with the HT-A9. Significantly less so with the HT-A7000 setup that I’ve used to watch that film with over a dozen times.

No drop-outs on the rears so far. I’ve only done streaming so, audio has been good. I hope audio gets to a whole different level when I play my physical media. • I can still remember wanting a Nakamichi 1000 cassette deck! I went Sonos Arc, Era300s, Sub over the last week .. fully expecting a new Arc++ later this year. If I wanted a one off/stay as is solution for TV only surround the Dragon could have been it. I'm putting my investment into an expectation that Sonos is going to do something very impressive moving forward. It would really only take a software upgrade to offer a 4x Era 300, 2x Sub, 1x Arc configuration ... rebalancing the Arc more towards conversation delivery. I still need to install the new gear and do something with my old Sonos surround system. Speaking of hacks - if I listen to music video, concerts, etc I play them through my OPPO and also push the audio via Toslink to a pair of Devialet Phantom Golds. Everything stays in sync nicely and the surround system just becomes fill. It'll be interesting to see what the new Sonos setup can do with Atmos without any Phantom support.

In the photo, the power cable for the closest rear speaker is tucked over then under the top of the side table but never goes any further, the speaker in the photo, isn't truly plugged in.

Atmos effects only appeared (marginally) at high volumes which meant the space got overwhelmed and is unsustainable with neighbours + smaller UK spaces). Yes, I could turn it down and it still sounds excellent. I love bass but had to turn it down to -4. In my awkward space, a great soundbar experience is good result in its own right, any Atmos effects are a bonus. With that in mind at £899 the Q990C is nearly a third of the price and should be plenty for your average consumer.

  • My take-away would be if you have the jack to let go, and the right space for a larger system, The Dragon is by far overall the currently available most impressive, albeit quite big, HTB system. Yet it can be improved. The absence of a room automated EQ would be an expected feature which may in itself make any other changes nearly moot. It could address the issue of the rears not delivering as much lower frequencies, which should put it least equal to the effect that, more or less, made the Sonos speakers shine in that regard (hopefully the soundstage can simply be widened, if desired, with more physical separation of the front L & R speakers while not hampering the height effects negatively). With the large amount of electronics in The Dragon, an automated EQ system seems almost de rigueur - thus a curious oversight in order to optimally leverage the power of the amount of processing and individual amplification present. It makes a case for the question is Nakamichi considering either adding it (if possible) to the current version of The Dragon or incorporating it in a future version? For me, that's the (sixty) four-thousand question.

  • I have 14x14 medium size loft and only watch movies, which is best for atoms experience apart from dragon? Also does traditional home theatre setup like klipch 5.1 beat any soundbar home theatre setup?

    • A9 - the 5.1 would not be as good at 3D audio

  • I have the 990b. Can’t sell it fast enough. I’ll never buy another “ flagship” for one year soundbar from Samsung. I am now deciding between the dragon or a dedicated system I thought I’d never do again. I have a quote coming for a dedicated system so we will see .

  • I got the Q930c. It’s a less powerful version of the 990c but also about $400 cheaper. It sounds amazing to me and I have no rear channel dropouts. I can only imagine the 990c

    • I’m a floozy for the priciest products … I’ve heard a lot of good things about the 30c

  • I bought the Nakamichi shockwafe SSE Earc in May to upgrade my Nakamichi shockwafe SSE ARC in my master bedroom. I felt once I got it, it was so good i don't think I would of ordered the Dragon if I knew it was so good. However after getting the dragon in my basement to replace my other Nakamichi shockwafe SSE ARC 1000 watts. It was on another level to the Nakamichi shockwafe SSE Earc 1300!watts.

    • There is no comparison. Ethernet the bars on the two systems (just to start the comparison)
