Mitch McConnell says he stands by past statement that ex-presidents are not "immune"

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell tells "Face the Nation" that he stands by "everything" he said in the days and weeks after the Jan. 6 attack about former President Donald Trump's actions related to that day. "Obviously, it'll be up to the Supreme Court to decide whether I was correct," McConnell said.

  • The sad thing is people were talked out of convicting him on impeachment BECAUSE the Lawyer and McConnell had said he could be criminal charged after leaving office. They SHOULD have convicted on impeachment as well because he wouldn't have been eligible to run for any government office again.

    • They are using that as a defense now. He can’t be prosecuted because he was not impeached. WOW just wow

    • Not necessarily. A Senate conviction doesn't automatically make the impeached official ineligible to run for office in the future. The Senate has the discretion to hold a separate (post-conviction) vote on future ineligibility, but is not required to.

    • If he were convicted of insightment of insurrection as charged he would have been banned constitutionally. Since he was never convicted by anyone the courts decided the insurrectionist clause of the constitution didn’t apply and couldn’t be used to bar Inmate No. P01135809 from the ballot. This is all Mitch’s fault. The way he spinelessly abdicates his influence in this interview as if he has no power in republican politics is absurd and disgusting.

  • This is a fairly counter-productive interview. When you're a force in the legislative branch of government, the last thing you're going to do is opine on the executive branch. They should discuss more the role of popular myths (informed by media personalities) in motivating legislators to non-compliance with party platforms. That would be interesting.
