This match is so emotional to watch post her retirement. You can tell Maria and her team knew it was the end. I've watched her since I was a young girl so really adore Masha.
The 30-year-old Maria vs. the then-19-year-old Sabalenka. Russian v. Belarussian. This one must have set the record for sustained decibel-level hollering!!! Even Vika's little screeches could not compete with these two! Aryna is certainly the reigning WTA slammer queen, and this match is a marvelous display of what the former queen, Sharapova, could do. Great highlights of a classic match with amazing historical value. (Love her or hate her -- I loved her -- Maria was a huge star who was always fun to watch. And despite her celebrity and prima donna attitude, she ALWAYS gave 100%+ in her matches. She fought to the very last point without let-up. She was a champion.)

This feels like Maria vs. a younger version of Vika, or perhaps Maria vs. a younger version of herself? Uncanny similarities in playing style. The big difference, though, is that following Sharapova's shoulder operations, she did become better at building points when power, pace and aggression weren't enough, or her serve wasn't consistent. Interesting to see her so emotional here, it's like she cherished each of her post-ban wins (over Halep, Wozniacki, Sabalenka) that much more than before. She clearly would've kept playing for a couple of more years had it not been for the recurring injuries.
Sabalenka came out swinging but why the hell did belt it so hard when she had set point? Sharapova with the experience in this match. Bravo 👏🏼
