A month after the Income Tax Department froze its bank accounts over non-payment of dues the Congress party cried foul. The party’s ex president Rahul Gandhi claimed that the Congress is left with no money to run its election machinery.
Party’s matriarch Sonia Gandhi, at her first press conference since 2020, slammed the NDA government, accusing it of trying to freeze democracy and edge out the Opposition. The timing of the move by the Income Tax Department and fresh notices to Congress for its tax obligations from 30 years ago, does raise suspicion. But the history of the case and the recent Delhi High Court order on 13th March indicate that the Congress may not be an innocent victim of a heavy handed government targeting the opposition and it needs to clean up its tax duties. In a very significant comment the Delhi Hight Court refused to provide relief to the Congress party which had sought a stay on the tax department’s action against it. In its order the learned court said, “The problems that beset the petitioner today are thus, and to a large extent, of its own making. The ITAT, in our considered opinion, was consequently justified in rejecting the allegation of the action being either motivated or actuated by mala fides.” Jist News puts in perspective the Congress’ charge.
