WINE - Wine Is Not an Emulator. Also -- Wine is the free and open source backend used for crossover Also -- Wine is what Valve's Steam Play/Proton uses Also -- Valve contracted CodeWeavers -- the creators of CrossOver, for Proton work several years ago through now. So -- when you contribute to WINE code -- you help both gaming on linux AND mac. So --- all you Mac gamers -- thank Valve and your linux brethren. -- Brought to you by one of those basement dwelling neck bearded linux nerds.
Thank you, GloriousEggroll, for all your hard work on this front! This is an exciting time for alternatives to Windows, recently switched my gaming rig over to Linux and not looking back. Been dabbling with Wineskin Winery (on Mac OS) for years now, have always loved and appreciated the scene and the community that makes all of this possible. Keep up the amazing work and thank you for taking a moment to educate-so much can go unnoticed in terms of the all the folks involved to make this magic happen, but I promise that everyone appreciates the amazing progress! You’re a legend and I appreciate you taking a moment to set the record straight. For those Mac users a little more technically inclined, I’d recommend checking out Wineskin Winery and the corresponding porting scene around it and other Wine-related efforts on the Mac. While I don’t personally own any Apple Silicon for myself, I believe the latest unofficial builds of Winery support the M1. With a little tinkering, I can get games like Witcher 3 running fantastically on my older Mac hardware. I wouldn’t be surprised if, with a little time and attention to settings, a tinkerer could better realize the accomplishments of the community here.
@@BrianJones-wk8cx Why not just use bootcamp?
@@WhatThePheel No longer an option with the M1 chips.
@Garrus Vakarian It has worked great for me on M1 Max
I wasn't expecting this video! I thank you for giving a different perspective of performance on these new MacBooks.
What I'm curious about is if the frame stutters are from shader compilation or not. The reason is, compiled shaders are cached. If that's true that means the longer you play the game - the smoother the gameplay gets as all the shaders get compiled. If this is true, Crossover or others could share precompiled caches and remove the vast majority of stutter. This becomes even more feasible because there's very few gpu configurations so you don't have to keep as many caches. Of course, it might not be shader compilation stutter...
I tossed up Witcher 3 using Wine on my new M1 Max, and initially I was getting stuttering, but the longer I played the less stuttering I had. So it does sound like it is shader compilation stutter.
Witcher 3 can get high. In my experience it is specifically Nvidia Hairworks that is causing the crash. Turn that off and high works for me on the M1 Pro. Hope this helps someone.
Idk it’s worse than I expected, honestly 😅
I miss intel to be honest 😂 they should still make some intel products. Like iMac 27 inch.
Hey! I would absolutely love if you could benchmark the new M1 Pro on Parallels as that is how I am planning to game on my mac.
Better than I thought once you explained the n64 graphics were due to capture card settings issues. But gaming is not really this laptop's main focus in the first place so still did pretty decent considering that fact.
‘Gaming is not this laptops main focus” This is an excuse by Apple and too many Mac fans are towing that line. for such “high end” laptops these MBPs severely lack in a massive aspect to the total computer experience - “play” Apple is a multi trillion dollar corporation with god knows how many $billions, yet the Mac platform has languished when it comes to AAA games for decades. There is no excuse for Apple to be abysmal in this area of general purpose and high end computing anymore. Don’t feel bad or excuse them, demand better otherwise they will not bother to address this issue.
@@AdmiralBison Well it is sad that my $1600 laptop destroys it in gaming where for the price the MacBook should beat my laptop in every single way considering how much more it costs.
@@AdmiralBison Developers don’t port to mac because everybody who buys macs are people who browse facebook all day. If anything, the same could be said for high end chrome books, crypto mining computers (lol), or servers. Sure, they can design chrome books to be gaming machines. But nobody who buys a chrome book will game on it. Does that mean they should spend resources on something .01% of their user base wants?
@@AdmiralBison idk ARM is pretty new so that's why more games are supported on the intel MacBooks
@@XxViciousxX This isn't actually true, it can handle a lot with much less impact on battery life and performance which is a deal breaker when it comes to choosing windows. Don't get me wrong I love windows but yeah big deal breaker if it can do a lot and battery life and longevity just suck
Still a Mac but it’s very impressive especially with the battery and mini led
I know this is an old video... Here's the big difference between current mac and PC for me. Right now I have a m2pro mac mini and a $3000 PC with Nvidia 4080 and Intel i9 chip. I use the same dual 2k 144hz monitors for both systems. Using World of Warcraft as my comparison, i get about 40-80 fps on my mac mini. I get 80-144 fps on my pc. Both at ultra and high settings. The big difference is the heat the PC puts out. I have to turn on my portable AC to keep the room comfortable as after an hour or so, the room gets hot with the PC. My mac does not make a noticeable change in temperature in the room.
Please do the parallel desktop test as well 🙏
10:36 WINE is not an emulator, not arguing just detailing on the self recursive acronym.
Witcher 3 crashed on high settings because Nvidia hairworks was on. Just turn off the hairworks options and set everything else to high/ultra and the game should work.
Whats going on with that screen cap quality?
can you play path of titans on the M1 Chip MacBook Pro 2020?
You predicted the Game Porting Toolkit. Well done.
At 12:38 in the video. The idea of playing portal without knowing about glados hurts
you should try minecraft witch shaders, that need powerful gpu to run smoothly, and minecraft runs on java, you need only install java jdk for m1
yes, you should have re-recorded gameplay footage. Still thanks for the video

8:35 Hold up right there, Steam Deck is not ARM64, its x86 still (or AMD64). It won't help Mac unless Linux developers make significant advancements in firmware and driver support for ARM64 which might trickle into stuff like Proton or Wine... Apple MacOS is just too closed walled garden for it to thrive with gaming unfortunately.
@Cold As The Poles I presume your being sarcastic, otherwise you're hilariously wrong.
@@genesishep Ah yeah, but Apple has been making it harder for such things. They ditched OpenGL and Vulkan and are using a dodgy Metal API for starters... (I've heard that games using Metal API just don't perform as good as vulkan counterparts)
@@PRiMETECHAU "I've heard that games using Metal API just don't perform as good as vulkan counterparts" You heard wrong. Metal is performant. OpenGL is dead. Running a game locally for getting a worst experience than same game using online gaming services makes no sense to me, I think it shouldnt be in your book. I mean, the whole point of gaming on local hardware is because (when properly implemented) it is a much better experience than using cloud gaming services. Otherwise it is not a thing.
If you run the pirated version (buy your games first), it sometimes actually works.
How does doom eternal run?
does anyone know if the macbook pro can run valorant
Is boot camp not a thing anymore?
Witcher 3 runs fine at high but hairworks are the reason it crashes turn off hairworks.

Hey, I've got a problem. I need programs like photoshop/indesign/premiere pro so I have to buy apple. But I also want to play games and I don't have the money to buy two pc's xD Is the M1 Macbook Pro the solution? I have high expactations on design and that these programs went well - but for gaming I only want to play Valorant or other f2play titles. I know to play games with low quality so I dont have much expactations. Is there any solution to work and play games on mac?
What did you end up doing? I’m curious.
It's not your typical college laptop anymore like the Intel MacBook Pro's that can do everything, too bad Apple miss the boat they should had x86 support in the M1 then it can really compete with the BIG boys.
Woohoo, I get to be the first in the comments to say "Wine" stands for "Wine IS Not an Emulator" ;-).
You are getting 40 to 45 on Shadow of the Tomb Raider on 1920 x1200. I can get more then that on my PC at 2560 x 1440 which would be 112fps. If I drop it down to 1920 x 1200 I would get more then that. So no that's not good.
Imagine Nintendo switch head the M1 chip . I seriously hope that Nintendo gets up it of there asses and makes a proper sequel Switch with proper performance and 1080p screen
Why would they? There’s nothing wrong with the Switch. They are making money hand over fist. The hardware doesn’t make a game good, the game makes the game good.
@@deusprogrammer_thekingofspace ah yes charging $70 for a ps3 like games
the new MacBook use and adaptive frame rate so lord knows if any of the numbers are correct, this is a huge reason why most programs fell out of development

Proton does not work on Mac, so you have to run all of Steam through Wine/Crossover.

These M processors are doing surprisingly decent for a new architecture
They are amazing actually. Gaming wise, it’s being limited by software mainly, but battery life, thermals, and other resource intensive tasks typically perform better with m1 variant chips than any other computers except for some desktops.

the reason Witcher 3 crashes on high is because it turns on nvidia hairworks. just turn it off and u good

If Apple finds a way for Macbooks to become true gaming machines, they would sell like hotcakes. Is DOTA 2 playable?
Lmao it can't even get 60fps at 1200p low meanwhile my pc gets 100fps in most games at 4k high in 90% of games

Good buzz cut
Sorry, what? Portal came out way way way after 64-bit was a thing. It's 32-bit yeah, but the first AMD x86-64 chip was released in 2003 and there were 64-bit chips back in like the 80's, maybe prior too
I’m sorry but it if isn’t clear to all of us Mac fans, Apple NEEDS TO EMPLOY A GAME GURU. Cloud gaming, Apple Arcade for children and demoing one or two old AAA games is not going to cut it. For expensive “ high end” laptops M1 Pro/Max fall far short on a massive aspect to the total computer experience - “play”. Apple has neglected AAA gaming for decades and Mac users ought to be critical towards Apple than PC gamers in this area. There shouldn’t be any need to eek out and tweak performance just to get reasonable performance for today’s gaming standards out of the already slim pickings of native games , let alone have worse results in Crossover and Parallels. This is more Apple’s fault, than it is developers not bothering to put resources into a platform that has languished in this area since the beginning. Don’t excuse a multi-trillion dollar corporation they can’t do AAA gaming when small outlets in China are able to pull better AAA gaming experiences with far less capable hardware and budgets.
You sound like you don't know what native support means, those games in steam library don't have native support. Don't mislead.

hmm valve porting to linux x86 (x64) has nothing to do with ARM tho.. so Crossover emulated x86 to ARM?
Nothing to do with CrossOver - the M1 can run x86 code using Rosetta by itself.

Wondering too. Hoping evrrything is okay...
Please Tim Apple just splash that cash around to attract first class native game ports to Apple Silicon. If that handheld Switch competitor rumor is true, maybe that'll be what attracts more games to the Apple Silicon platform.
The big elephant in the room is the fact that this is an SOC - a CPU with an integrated GPU. So dear AMD, please, please do not serve us another round of just a little bit improved APUs. We want an integrated GPU that performs on RTX2060 levels at minimum! Apple has demonstrated that this is absolutely feasible. Anything less than that would be just an embarrassment.
Not gonna jump in on AMD's defense here, even Intel don't have such level of integrated GPU. It's quite the tall order too considering 2060 performs quite similar to 3060. An SOC does not equal to an APU, it's almost an entirely different thing. Personally, I'd love to see the more realistic RDNA 2 APU soon, that's gonna be awesome.
Memory bandwidth. AMD could come out with a banging APU and it would be kneecapped by DDR4/5 latency and bandwidth.
🤦♂️ The Playstation and Xbox both use an AMD SoC.
Considering the M1 IPad Pro was running Divinity original sin 2 max settings 1440p 60 FPS with minimal drops, I’m not surprised how strong the new M1 chips.

Damn this processor sucks for gaming
Witcher 3 cannot be high 😂
M1 Pro for gaming is NOT better than I thought, it turned out disappointing. It should be no surprise considering Apple has done Jack squat in decades to do anything meaningful to make the platform a respectable AAA gaming powerhouse. Apple doesn’t know gaming, Apple thinks mobile, cloud and Apple Arcade is gaming and is desperate to sell that to gamers instead. Let’s stop excusing a multi-trillion dollar corporation and demand better, otherwise they will not do better.
You didn't say a single meaningful thing @duane. Everything you said was vague shit, how about you mention the specific problems you had with it.
That's really disappointing, since it looks like the M1 Pro's GPU gaming performance is worse than even the Radeon 5500M from 2019, which can run Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1080p on high at 50 fps and Witcher 3 at 1080p on high at 60+ fps. However, on Notebookcheck, the ranking of M1 Pro chip is just sitting above the RTX2070 mobile, which can run the above settings at 100+ fps. So either the theoretical benchmarks are bogus or you did something wrong.
