  • i worked at a fast food place, we were required to keep asking “upsize?” “add on?” “if you change ___ to ___, it’s only $2 extra” at the end of every sentence. we’d also talk about the menus if given a chance and would point to the food then “accidentally” move our fingers to the add-ons. you’d be surprised at the amount of people that initially only wanted 1 thing but ended up with way more. be firm in your choices and don’t get swayed, it’s not worth it

We had to say certain things, we were recorded, had dedicated team to listen and give us pointers how to improve. I did quit the job but used the knowledge to advance in life and tbh shit works.

  • One of the best things I learned working fast food is if you don't want one of the elements of a combo, don't order the combo. If you're gonna order water instead of soda, just get fries, a burger, and your free water. If you don't like the fries, just get a burger and a drink. It's almost always gonna be cheaper to get the two things you want than to pay a slightly discounted price for all 3. More complicated example, if I want a sausage egg mcgriddle, it's cheaper to get a sausage mcgriddle add egg than to get a SEC mcgriddle subtract cheese. Only pay for what you actually want, no more.

    • In my country at most places you get an infinite refill drink or a tiny bottle of water for the same price. During summer i got a cup of ice with a little green tea, it was basically flavored water by the time i finished the food outside.

      @KorianHUN@KorianHUN Жыл бұрын
    • Not here, we have no free water and no free refills. When a burger is 8 bucks and a menu with fries and drink 12, it's very worth to get the menu. (Seperate it would be at least 16)

    • I used to work at McDs, when people would order combos and ask for a water, I’d always try to take it out of a combo to make it cheaper. One of my managers would always get mad and make me keep it as a combo and give them a water bottle (which is actually an upcharge!). Also, several times when I did this I’ve had customers argue with me (for like 10 minutes in the middle of lunch rush one time) that they wanted a combo with a cup of water not just a sandwich, fry, and a cup of water (which is the same thing but cheaper, plus we literally cannot substitute a cup of water into a combo).

  • Fast food restaurants always confuse me. For example at McDonald's 20 nuggets and an entire basket of fries is 8 dollars, but if you order 10 nuggets and medium fries it's 7 dollars. Makes no sense how their pricing works.

    • Kinda like illusion of 3 choice. For example if you have option A: 6 nuggets for 5$, B: 12 nuggets for 12$ and C: 16 nuggets for 14. If you saw all 3 options you would probably pick option C, thinking "look, C is so much better than B, im saving 2$, compared to option C!" You are right. You are saving money if you compare B and C. But if you compare A and C you will see this is not the case anymore. Option B is the worst option. Nobody will take it. it only exist to trick people to buy much larger option, that is C. It may even trick some people who originally only wanted option A to grab C and that is their plan

      @anzek25@anzek25 Жыл бұрын
    • They want you to think you’re getting a better deal by ordering the larger, more expensive option. Same with their soda. A small is 16oz and $1.59. A large is 32oz and $1.89. You get 100% more soda for 15% more money.

  • My family use to buy fast food almost every day for me as a kid. (Think how that affected me). But I don’t think they bought it more because it was advertised cheap but that it was convenient for them to buy me a meal than to make one especially since they were so busy with work so I think that would be a factor as well.

I was in my early twenties, working late hours to impress the boss, would get home at 9pm, completely exhausted, didn't want to cook. • I work at a McDonald’s but I actively try to make an order as cheap as possible for a customer. More commonly it’s around 50¢ to $1, but more recently thanks to a deal currently going on at my work (2 for $6) is cheaper by like $3/pair for someone who is ordering two combos of items part of the deal (Big Mac, QPC, 10 Piece, or Filet-O-Fish). All I have to do is break them up from being listed as combos. I don’t know if they originally intended to order x amount of combos, but I don’t try to get them to spend more and I only tell them about whatever they ask.

    • There's certainly some manipulative pricing at play, but I think it's worth mentioning that the cost of servicing a customer doesn't increase linearly with the quantity of food. If the size ratio of drinks is 1:2:3, then the fair price ratio is somewhere between that and 1:1:1, with the exact amount depending on how high the fixed costs of service are in proportion to the cost of the food.

  • My secret to getting fast food is knowing what you want beforehand, and crunching some numbers beforehand to know how you can get a basic version of what you like for cheap. At McDonald's, if I am buying, I usually get a McDouble, small fries, and a large sweet tea (their tea is the bomb). This totals up to $4.48 where I live. The larger size sounds tempting, but I just tell myself I am being somewhat healthier by not upsizing. The 2 for $3.19 menu (anything listed under the dollar menu section that involves normal food items) does knock off a bit, especially at certain locations. Although sometimes I will splurge and get something that costs more. This is where the app comes in handy. I like their coffee drinks, so I will sometimes order a frappe, latte, or something like that. So I will check the app to see what I have. I get points from my splurge orders and ordering for my family. So when my points are getting ready to expire, I usually order either a medium fry or ice cream (assuming they can make it) to use them up. Otherwise, I look through the deals. There is my 20% off daily coupon I use if I splurge to a total more than $7.50 or if I order a number 7 or something. Otherwise, if I want a coffee drink, I will use the $1.50 off coupons for medium or large frappes, mochas, and lattes (if you don't have it, buy one of those drinks and use the app in some way while purchasing it, then it may give it to you). It doesn't really save any money over getting the small (in fact, I recommend only ordering the small frappes if you don't have a coupon unless you really want it because the medium is almost twice as much as the small), but it gets you a bit more for not nearly as much more than the small. I have their system sorta figured out for how I can maximize my dollar for the food I want and trying to not eat too much at the same time (otherwise I would say use the daily $1 large fry coupon to technically save even more with my regular order). Either way, I am sure I am doing exactly what McDonald's wants because it causes me to eat there more than other fast food joints knowing their system, although I love McDonald's anyways, so it doesn't matter. I could do the same for any massive fast food restaurant chain, except Chick Fil A which seems to be expensive no matter what.
