I think 3M wants you to buy some of their tape...
Don't forget their specialty tape knife.
Well, I have to say 3M products are damm good quality. I would pick them over Chinese crap any day.
Yes no but 3M is best
I'm a retired Lineman / Cable man of 38yrs. This may look more time consuming, but compared to hand taping as I was taught early on in my carrier, it is more faster. Price is very expensive, either way, you miss one step on primary voltage and your screwed. You'll see extra pieces on trucks when you had to open a new kit to replace one part, then you have to answer for the added cost to the project. Trick is when working with high voltage cable slow and easy, faster you go more mistakes happen. I encourage all young'uns to look at this trade, it was very good to me.
Too bad I'm afraid of heights :(
Why did KZhead recommend this to me? Why couldn’t I stop watching it?
Embrace the pointless, but oh so fascinating knowledge lol
because you is a dyatelochek :)
Should have made this video under the usual URD cable splicing conditions. At the bottom of a trench during a rainstorm.
Borkzilla I’m thinking this splice is probably made on a power line up in the air. Not underground. Underground lines are contained in conduit. This line did not appear to be contained in a conduit. In fact it looked more like a communications line than a power transmission line.
@@thewidower1 this is 10kv cable here that is laid underground.
Cables in Australia are buried direct, and the jointers Dona bit better of a job of making sure it ain’t going to leak. Sure, this is a demo, but I see a few bits that could encourage water to wick in.
@@originalusernamefail maybe they need more protection tubes lol.
@@thewidower1 not all lines under ground are in conduit, that is a power cable with a concentric neutral. They are used for high voltage under ground.
Needs more tape
This protection tube doesnt protect anything, therefore another protection tube is applied. Now its time to apply another protection tube to protect the previous two protection tubes. And finally a protection tube is applied on to the previous 3 protection tubes which doesnt protect the connection very well.
The first is applied to protect the first wire, the shrink tube is the one who protects and the tape is used to seal the shrink tube
Then the tube protects the tube and tape then big tape the ends 😂😂😂
Don’t forget about lube
When you have a cable with 30kV and 3kA in it you really , really, really , really don’t want a leak. There’s enough power going through a cable like that to vaporize a bathtub of water in couple seconds.....
@@3rdHalf1 that´s what she says :)
My Dad worked for 3M for decades and grew up with a garage full of cable jointing equipment, happy memories.!
Doesn't matter how broken your shit life is, 3M can tape it back together for you
About a 100 years In the future , when they find this thing and carefully forensically unwrap it expecting to find ancient power crystals. They are gonna laugh for hours when they realize its a wire splice...
Jeeze, what kind of subwoofer does this run?
induction furnace by Boston Acoustics
Funkypups
what if you're like me and forget to put all those shrink tubes on one end before you start?
Than your fucked. I know that feeling man. When you solder like 30 wires and figure out you forgot the heat shrink...
Hot glue for life.
duct tape
Super 88 is your friend.
then you’re like me and get to do it again.
Welcome to the Department of Redundancy Dept.
NiggaNig420 TOONZ a boneless pizza and a 2l coke please
Nice video, and after seeing the comments below, I can tell there are a lot of hacks commenting. There are good reasons for having connections like this, sure there's more than one way to skin a cat, but if you have to have a connection that will out last the rest of the cable and be safe while doing so then this it. Plus it keeps the guys with the clip boards off your back.
It's good to know Michael Caine is still keeping busy with voiceover work.
Take a shot every time a new 3M product is used for the same joint. Have your affairs in order before hand.
Remember to apply tape to the bottle beforehand.
I think NASA Approves this splice.
even NASA does not have this competency to approve 3M's MV joint.
Approved but barely Needs more tape
Needs more bureaucracy
NEEDS MORE TAPE!! lol
No tools required - pulls out a ratchet.
And a knife😂😂 seems like a lot of work for what it is
AND ACT'S LIKE HES SCARED TO USE IT.
Brings back nightmares of doing hundreds of these.
Thanks KZhead for putting this in my suggestions this is exactly what I've been looking for.
I have to say, I'm impressed, I did not know so much work went into making these cable joins. I'm glad it does though, that's not the kind of cable you want coming apart.
I have no clue how I got onto this video
This video posted 7 years ago and now i see in my home screen of youtube was satisfied
Man, I wish they explained what everything did and why it's useful to use multiple layers etc. But probably the target audience already knows the details.
Essentially, everything thing inside the mesh is electrical isolation and everything outside the mesh is mechanical protection and moisture sealing.
I couldn't stop watching.
This is one time super job, for maximum security coverage!!☝️
These sort of videos relax me..
i need to re-evaluate my life.
That's a million dollar splice (3M to be exact)
I thought I woke up to watching a cable connector commercial until the guy starting wrapping a million layers of 3M products on it.
Thats such a genius way to do things omg!!!
This is great! I'm sure our company can use this product.
Imagine completing a splice and realizing you forgot the heat shrink.
think theres same amount of tape if not more .. he be better with silicone wtf he doin to it 😂 😂😂 3m I used to work in a place that cut their tape rolls 😂😂😂 fuckin Neva sent us this shit lol
1st MV termination I was involved in as an apprentice went to shit and blew up a 4160v switch at a NORAD site on Antigua in 1987. It was just after dark when the base lineman called the power house and told them to energize the circuit. I was great fireworks display! I am just glad I was the apprentice and essentially handed the Journeyman tools and other items as he did the work (did the work wrong evidently). I flew back to Florida the next day and missed the ass chewing on base.
😂 Great story. Better him than you at the time, but you know too that you may have the same responsibility at some point. It’s learning by mistakes be it yours or others. I like redundancy and having either a coworker, senior, or junior checklisting every step to insure a proper job with complex and high risk tasks. I’m no electrician by any means, but the redundancy works with other trades tasks as well.
gosh so mee

Lol
Man that was something. 3M is the best!
I need more videos like this.
If only I could find a woman who would take such time, care and precision on my equipment, I'd be set.
precision?
@@Vsor do you really need that ahah
NEEDS MORE LUBE! (OR TAPE) LOL AND.... IT'S 2019, HOW DARE YOU REFER TO GENDER THAT WAY>??!!? IT'S "IF I COULD ONLY FIND A XXXXXXX" INSERT GOVERNMENT SOCIAL JUSTICE WARRIOR TYPE PRONOUN AFTER "FIND A".
for when she really doesn't want to have your baby
I have no idea what I just witnessed but it was cool as hell.
Excellent job 👍
What a coincidence! This is the exact same procedure that Darth Vader uses to put his socks on in the morning before leaving for work!
Вот это залипуха))) А в начале как хорошо все шло, дажи зажимы сами отломились в нужном месте...
This is fascinating and I'm not even an electrician.
Top notch bass playing in this song.
Why did I watch this? I couldn’t stop myself. I learned that with enough tape you can fix anything
I don't own a trans-atlantic fiber-optic cable but is there somewhere I can buy this? I can find a few uses for these products
How far will a 3M 2228 Mastic sleeve go up a 3M representatives ARSE.
May I ask, what would be the purpose of this application? You may want to find a cheaper solution for your problem!
Doing the same job here in America, using 3M products, I feel that ours would hold up longer. The process is different, but same idea. We use a one piece outer boot. Just a different kit I suppose.
Can I use this process to fix my phone charging cable?
how much this work??? and tapes glues.... i only use a glue bonder and finish
Excellent
Meanwhile, in my basement...in an old extension cord....two pieces of duct tape....BAM! Its done
Good Knowledge I Learn A lot
TUT: how zu use all our products in 9minutes. And we don't know what tape works the best for this kind of operation, therefore use all in random order.
I think this video contains the most entertaining comment section of all time
are these heat-less shrink membranes available for 14ga wire?
I can't believe I am watching this...again
i have the feeling they had some extra rolls of these tapes and sought some way to use it^^
3:15 to 3:50.. reminds me I need to book my next proctology appointment.
Синей изолентой и на века. . .
Wonder what that splice cost? Including labour!
Very nice
anyone who knows what's the "name" of the tool he uses to keep the connector stable while he "breaks" the bolts
why am I watching this at 3am?
Perhaps the same reason I am
Excelente artículo
Therapeutic watching love it
Awesome
I need to contact your repesentative in Egypt. I have a big project and need big quantities @ 3M UK & Ireland
1:40 wipe cable to remove grease 3:17 applies grease to cable
Jat Tan. Cleans cable to remove any contamination. Then applies electrically inert, void filling grease. Best to know what’s being done, before commenting on it .
That job looks majorly EXPENSIVE. You know 3M doesn't sell all that stuff cheap !!
i don't think you know what kind of cable this is... its for 7Kv-33Kv(after what i can see in the video), if there is any small airpocket between the grounding layer and the inner core then you will see the joint burn over in a couble of hours, or a couble of days if you're lucky.
kV* Small k for kilo, big V for Volt.
In large companies nothing gets done in the 100$ range.. Amounts of 5000 - 10.000 $ is a normal bill.
Wouldn't you want it done right if it's the splice powering your house?
Borkzilla this line would not be running to a single house. If anything it would be coming from a telephone relay station. High power lines are rarely dual conductor cables. This looks more like a communications cable.
Very good 👍 job
:44 "no tools required." :54 pulls out hex bit ratchet lol
Exactly :D
That was optional just for the video. Real electricians use their teeth
That is one fancy wire sock!!!!!!!
I think the tape is a great idea over heat shrink when you’ve forgotten to thread the heat sharing before mechanically connecting the cables 😂😂😂
I love mastic, but geez never seen so much crap used to seal a joint. Might as well of used some glue at the edges of those cool shrink wrap tubes, just to make sure.. but I think its sealed.
Wtf am I doing here at 2am LOL
Is the guy's wedding band 3M branded?
When i ever need to repair my 2 inch thicc cable. I’d probably use some good ol’ flextape
never ending insulation....
Next: Splice of a submarine power cable. Get the tape ready...
Proper insulation is needed when you're splicing a cable that'll carry up to a million volts.
What is the song in the video?
I've used better cold splices where after your splice is done you tie or clamp at least temporarily the ends of your "shrink tube" for lack of a better word and twist it or squeeze it to pop the 2 parts waterproof adhesive filler. The whole thing fills up with waterproof epoxy. It's way faster.
They had to repair the cable in my yard and it had 10 layers of repairs the whole thing took 2 weeks and maybe 20 guys. And left the directions pages laying in the grass it was kind of interesting
nice speaker wire
Looks a bit tough to work with. Great however if in an area were using heat is not an option
whats this for again?
KZhead Experts out in force in this comment section.
Home depot?
Interesting, but the cable preparation phase is missing.
I dont get the silicone grease, i know it has good dielectric value but why a grease?
I already thought it would be something like bending moving Thanks! :D
Круть, можно, не открывая огневые, замутить муфту
This video would cost me at least 40 dollars just to watch.
I'm still twying to figyou out what gwease is.
я думал, что он езьбу свернул сначала :) А потом вижу, что так и задумано было :))
desperdicio de material?
Haha, "How to spend $300 plus half an hour on a single joint". Oh, and don't forget to join a "Training" before you use our tape... Incredible, just incredible!
That's dirt cheap for an underground cable repair.
I'm LMAO!!! Just when you think they won't add any more mastic tape/shrink, they just bring more that are bigger and bigger. I seriously thought it was a troll video by 6:55
I Liked With 3M Like button
0:42 you need no tools 0:52 using a tool 😂😂
I'm our coaxial cables for the tv are much smaller I America.
Синяя изолента заменила бы весь этот бутерброд, но они ее для себя еще не открыли )))))
Muy interesante q fuera en español!!!
