Set on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland, THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN follows lifelong friends Pádraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson), who find themselves at an impasse when Colm unexpectedly puts an end to their friendship. A stunned Pádraic, aided by his sister Siobhán (Kerry Condon) and troubled young islander Dominic (Barry Keoghan), endeavours to repair the relationship, refusing to take no for an answer. But Pádraic's repeated efforts only strengthen his former friend’s resolve and when Colm delivers a desperate ultimatum, events swiftly escalate, with shocking consequences.

  • So many scenes stick out for me but the one where Dominic tries to ask Siobhan out is absolutely incredible, so realistic and moving. I really felt for all the characters in this film.

  • Depression and despair in an older man who is despondent that he has left nothing musically creative for the world to remember him by. He takes it out on the person who cares about him the most, the way most depressed people mistakenly do. Such an amazing film. Everyone is so damn sad and lonely, but the movie is beautiful in its darkness.

    • What you don’t seem to realize is, that having to spend a lot of time in the presence of someone that shallow when you are anything but, can become very annoying over time. It has zero to do with depression, and everything with someone boring the pants off you on a regular basis. You may be the kind of person that doesn’t mind never going beyond any intelligent conversation, but not everyone is that shallow.

    • @@mgariepy42 No, when wrongs have been committed for 800 years you don't shut up about it. You scream it from the highest mountaintop you can climb. Notwithstanding that Ireland was the most devoutly Catholic country in the world, even more so than Italy, it was a religion imposed upon them by the English King Henry II, who with the blessing of Pope Adrian IV invaded Ireland with instructions to Christianize the heathens. The story of St. Patrick is a fairly tail. With the legalization of divorce, abortion and same sex marriage the Irish have poked a finger in the eye of the Catholic church, small recompense for the years of child abuse meted out by Catholic priests. You are familiar with the Magdellan Laundries right and the taking of children from unwed mothers to be put up for adoption. Not nice to talk about such unpleasantries. I only wished that Sein Fein had alligned themselves with the emerging Soviet Union after the Irish Revolution if no other reason than to make the British feel a bit uncomfortable at the idea of having a Soviet ally on their doorstep. The British deserve to feel a bit uncomfortable.

  • This movie is hands down one of the best in the history of cinema. From the acting to the scenery. It blew me away the first time I saw it and it's amazing how there's always something new to unpack whenever I rewatch it, like a nesting doll. It initially seemed like it was a simple (yet quite violent) story of a broken friendship, but it perfectly encapsulates the different tragedies of each of the characters. What I also found interesting was this sort of foreshadowing in the film i.e. (1) when Officer Kearney told Mrs. O'Riordan about a man who committed suicide by drowning himself in the lake, then later on in the movie, he found the dead body of his own son, Dominic, in the lake; (2) the last shot of Colm and Pádraic at the beach with Mrs. McCormick watching them from afar, which seems to suggest that one of them will probably die soon from Pádraic's relentless pursuit of continuing their back-and-forth (given that Mrs. McCormick was the one who told Pádraic about the two deaths coming to Inisherin, it appears she was the metaphorical banshee on the island), and; (3) Dominic's first scene in the film in which he was showing this stick with a hook that he found and he was like, "What would you use this for?", not knowing that Mrs. McCormick would be using that very same stick to pull his floating corpse to shore. Anyway, those are just my observations. Everyone in this film was remarkable, but I'm especially happy for Barry Keoghan starting to get the recognition he deserves. 💚

    • It’s great to read comments like yours! Nice to have thoughtful conversations. We have watched it 6 times since November and are still peeling the layers! I do disagree with you about the end scene. Colm says he doesn’t think banshees portend but rather observe. What me and mine debate is what kind of relationship do they have now. He says they will reconcile bcuz Padraic says he’ll take care of the dog anytime. I say Padraic makes it pretty clear they’re done. “Some things there’s no movin on from. And I think that’s a good thing.” I don’t see anything that would suggest either of them die. That ending is such a gut punch! Each loses something loved and irretrievable. 😢

      @mgariepy42@mgariepy42 Жыл бұрын
    • @@mgariepy42 Thank you! Yours is an interesting insight as well! :) I agree with you that they won't be reconciling. Pádraic made it pretty clear that there was no going back, he just didn't want to involve the innocent dog. As for the potential death, it's just that I also remember the scene where Colm said he was having (I assume intrusive) thoughts about playing his finished composition on Pádraic's funeral. That and Mrs. McCormick watching them from a distance hinted at me that Pádraic might die (but now that I think about your comment, maybe Colm meant a funeral at a later time, like if Pádraic does die, it's of something else i.e. natural causes and not from their fight). But yes, I hope not as it's already heartbreaking as it is! 😭

      @idkwtffr@idkwtffr Жыл бұрын
    • @@idkwtffr What almost everybody but a few missed is that in the last meeting between the two at the beach Colm has left no footprints in the sand (while in their first scene at the beach in the beginning of the film there was a most noticable deep row of tracks visible) And there's a very short shot showing his left hand has all it's fingers back - which indicates he's not among the physically living anymore. The Colm Padraic and the viewers see is a - very lively - apparition. Plus in an earlier scene when Padraic is piling wood in the windows of Colm's house there is a short shot from inside the house showing Colm sitting and smoking a cigarette. As the day before in the pub Padraic had announced to Colm he'd burn his house down at exactly two o' clock the next day and wouldn't be looking if he was inside or out, but he should leave the dog outside anyway (that was sitting outside when Padraic arrived at the house), Padraic had to assume that the Colm on the beach was still among the living. But the Banshee, Mrs. McCormack, who was on the scene while the house burned as you mentioned, had grabbed herself a wooden chair from outside which she sat on up on a mountain terrace in the last scene when Padraic walked away from Colm, thus visibly parting the living from the dead. (I must confess that it took me three viewings to put all the clues together, but once you've done that the ending really makes sense.)

  • Reading everyone's takes on this movie is just so interesting! I think the beauty of art lies hugely on how it can be interpreted in so many different ways, that's just so beautiful. For me, I had a simpler interpretation of the characters. I have a cousin who is very dear to me, who lost her boyfriend and her best friend in a span of one year. Lost them as in they became cold and distant and when she inquired why they both said they were too depressed to put any effort into relationships of any kind. My cousin is still so heartbroken to this day. The other day she said to me just how cruel and heartless can someone be to simply decide they don't want a person who has given so much love to them for years. I feel like in this movie, Colm is a very depressed man, and this made him want to detach himself from people he loves (as depression has done to a lot of people). This abandonment broke Pàdraic so much, it changed something in him. It really showed when Dominic says to him how he used to be nice and now he isn't.. so I feel like heartbreak has changed him into a worse, crueler version of himself. So I guess what I mean is, rejection makes some people lose faith in love and in kindness; and as for others, like Dominic, they cannot handle cruelness and rejection at all, they'd rather not be around than change anything about themselves to cope. My thoughts are all over the place I'm sorry lol

The parallels of the war on the mainland and how they are played out in this story about two men falling out of friendship are so well done. • The significance of the film is immense. With a backdrop of the civil-war, it's a very complicated film dealing with the end of a relationship and the reluctance of Pàdraic's acceptance of it. A human trait some of us will recognise.

    • Yes, definitely! I've watched it three times in three weeks already and gladly will for a fourth and maybe a fifth time within the next weeks. There's always something I hadn't seen or grasped before, and I love and understand the characters as if I'd grown up with them. And I never get tired of the magnificent scenic views and the beautiful music. Such an all around masterpiece! Can't be enough "making of"s of it to peek behind the scenes :-).

  • There is a character arch with Padraig transitioning from a nice happy go lucky person to a bitter unhappy man. He lived a simple life, free of the burden of inner struggle. He's very content with his life on the island and tending to his animals. Colm suffers from some narcissism and secretly resents Padraig's contentment so sets about breaking his innocents. Padraig likes his life and fights to hold onto it. Then suddenly everyone around him is conspiring in their own way to take it away. Which is what the banshee meant when she said a man will die. By the end of the movie Padraig is a different person. Hardened by the experience, he's got a heavy heart and a stoic demeanor. He's become more like Colm, which is why he comments that he likes him more now.

  • I really get where Brendan’s character is coming from. I have ended a couple of friendships over the years. They were people that I stopped liking over time as their true character became clear over time. I tend to be too patient and polite with people like that, but after a while it starts messing with my peace of mind because I dread having to spend more time with them. Fortunately they did get the message and never tried getting in tough again.

    @kellydalstok8900@kellydalstok8900 Жыл бұрын
    • They were boring and that was their “true character”? You can always avoid people you find do not meet your lofty expectations. Colm is on an island where he can’t avoid his “dull” friend. Padraic depends on Colm to stem his loneliness. There’s the thematic conflict. Can’t we all relate to the breakup of a lifelong relationship? Though probably not as devastating as the abruptness of their split! I think McDonagh makes both men sympathetic. And maybe the thematic current of “niceness” is something he wants us to reflect upon.

Turns out it's mostly true :') freaking uncanny. I will probably rewatch this brilliant film for Dom alone, poor fella.

    • If you think these accents sound close to the Jamaican accent then you would really need to search for the more southern accent such as the Cork and Kerry accent. That is where the Irish who were taken to the Caribbean came from mainly and you will be in little doubt then. :)

  • I found more to think on after watching it again, including how Paedric's denial turns a pebble into a boulder between the two men. I love that everything happens in a small village where everyone's familiarity with each other resembles a family and in a family, hurt can be amplified. I give this movie 5 out of 5. It's a well-told story with many parallels. I particularly am drawn to the concept of silence and how it becomes the defining difference between the two men. Colm wants silence that feels good and has to be selective with his time in order to experience it. Paedric experiences silence negatively and prefers superficial noise.
