(but highly amusing ).but hey ho ,we can all read the specs.On the strength of it I purchased one and everything you said is correct. functionality great ,sounds wonderful, large soundstage with depth (quite warm with analytical tones ...not typical Topping ..i have a few) but the major impressive feature is how it grabs hold and regulates the base...try listening to Weird Scenes inthe Gold Mine ""by The Doors ...totally new experience.I was of the impression that "burn in"was smoke and mirrors but I hold my head in shame when I experienced this after a few hours with this unit.....Oh the shame.

Thanks for the review! I've been playing with the DX9 for the last few days. I must say that I'm also a little confused about the line out vs pre out and the DAC mode. I'm thinking in the DAC mode the volume might decontrolled by the DAC (digital?) like on a D90/A90D stack... ALSO, on the remote, you can LONG PRESS most buttons and get additional functions. The only sadness with this remote is that it is still the old style Topping that is IR and VERY directional. The latest D90 III has a BT remote.... that would have been nice; and I wonder if this newer remote would compatible with the DX9.... Also, I'm setting up this DX9 for a composer that needs to A/B compare back and forth between studio monitors/active speakers and headphones. The old Topping remote had two MEMORY buttons that allowed quick jumping between two pre programmed global settings.... I'd love to hear if anyone has a work around to have the same functionality on this remote.... pressing the headphone button cycles all the headphone outs EVEN if I have only one specific OUT selected in the menu.... Topping please fix this... peace!
I agree with the inconvenience of switching from headphones to speakers. There is a "memory button" function in the menu, I have programmed switching by outputs on it

Dude the sound is unreal. Not the strongest hpa. But the sound is smooth and the dac sensational. It also has i2s input and it acts as a real preamp hub and awesome hpa. Well worth the money
Been listening to mine for about an hour and love it.
bother me that it can't run the tungsten. Will have the pair around the summer hopefully (depend if fast enough when a batch is open) I'll go either A70 Pro or more likely ifi pro iCAN Signature. It's a shame because it's not really an amp flaw and this DX9 has the looks and the sound. But those headphones just have too much hype for me to pass on (even if I may sell them in the end)

It feels like geshelli j2s is for people who want to upgrade op amps to sparkos 3602. I've tried the sparkos 3602 on the xd05 pro, and the sound signature is dark and bass-y, which is fun, but not necessarily my go-to sound signature for everyday listening. The fiio k19 does look cool. I wonder how it compares

Hello Zoes Hello people I have a question I am interested in topping's amp dac and i have noticed that the DX9 is 1300 dollars and the a70 pro with d70 saber is 1200 dollars only 100 dollars difference so the question is which one is better

I bought this wanting to consolidate my setup (Gustard X26pro and a90d) but this didnt come close to sounding as good. Still good though. The nail in the coffin was NO ANALOG INPUTS!
In which way was it lacking? :(
it lacked the presence of the Gustard. Side by side the Topping sounded like a recording whereas the x26 had the sense of hearing a live band.
Did you end up returning it for something else? What's your setup like now?

I'm a bit confused. I've been watching your reviews regularly and in fact watched all the recent Topping reviews as I was in the market for a new combo unit. Ended up buying the DX5 lite. Now I'm sitting here watching this review and I'm hearing things like other Topping units sounding like a "dead pan", which if I'm not mistaken was never mentioned in your previous - very positive reviews. So what's the story then?
I believe he means it’s sort of like a wall of sound but it’s still very detailed. Which he and other reviewers have mentioned before. And they have been getting better over time. This isn’t like that at all though.
Sounding neutral means it isn't exaggerating anything. When something is WARM like class-a or Tubey I will mention that. But topping stuff is generally just clear and precise. Especially with the lower price brackets that is what I expect. Things like the ifi ZenDac and its magic buttons add flavor to the lower cost realm.
Bought this right as it came out and it was fantastic! ...at least for a couple months before it died out of nowhere and led me to the most frustrating CS experience with Apos ive ever had. Long story short, I gave up on the DX9 and got a schiit jot2/bifrost 2/64 stack instead. Might be biased from that terrible experience but i really prefer the sound of this stack over the DX9. Fuck apos, i wont ever be buying from them again.

Quick question everyone: In my current setup, I use a Lokius as - big surprise - tone control/EQ. As in: PC --> DAC --> Lokius --> AMP Is there any way I could continue to use the Lokius as designated EQ in the signal chain if I'd want to use the DX9 as my DAC/AMP? Thanks!
No, it doesn't accept the analogue signal in from the Lokius. You can only do: PC --> DX9 --> Lokius --> AMP [not the DX9 amp]
Can you Audeze LCD GX?
The center button on my remote changes the pre-out outputs. Not sure why yours it duplicating the menu button. Also my DX9 came from the factory with the dac mode set to "PRE". I can't tell a diff switching between DAC and PRE.
I have a newbie question. Can you use the DX9 purely as a dac? Is there a way to connect it to a more powerful amp?
@@radiofreealbemuth that's what the line out setting is for. line out is a fixed signal output for use with another amp with independent volume control. Or if it's a speaker power amp that you're trying to power then then you can use the pre-out setting and control the volume with the topping dx9.
I don't have the setup for this, yet I want it so bad.

First and only experience was buying the D90SE and A90 stack, without listening to it first. Couldn’t wait to get rid of it almost immediately but I patiently ran it in or burned it and it still doesn’t sound good. Good thing I sold both!

I mean it is a super neutral sound. I too have grown away from that for pleasure but it is ABSOLUTELY needed for the sorts of assessment I do. You may note this was on my desk upstairs. Where I do more pleasure listening .

I'm torn between this and the FIIO K9 Pro ESS. That one has dual ES9038PRO DAC chips (which are known to be extremely clean sounding) vs a single AK4499EQ on this. There are not many reviews of the DX9 yet, looking for A/B comparison with other kilobucks.

@@princekittipon6510 Well it is very resolving of course. You will not get any EQ or other DSP options on it like the ADI DAC but it does have the high end looks and more power in the amp section if that matters to you. It's a very linear response graph except a very slight treble roll off after 16khz. Audibly, I can't tell a difference on it and a Chord Mojo 2 when testing IEMs. Driving large planar headphones using balanced cables is a different story though. Phenomenal separation and imaging. It sounds clean on every output and has sufficient power for everything I've tried even via the single ended jack.

I have both dac/amps. To me there has always been a glare somewhere in the lower mids or upper bass on the element iii. The dx9 doesn’t have that. It is also slightly warm as z said. It is more detailed for sure. I wanted to love the element ii and iii so much but they’re just not that great compared to the topping dx9 and dx5 that i compared them to, in my experience. Edit: if i could go back tho, I’d just save my money and be happy with the dx5. Still, the dx9 is truly awesome.
OPPO HA-1 from 2014 has a remote control with next/prev buttons that actually control foobar2000. We could do that via USB in 2014 Anything less is a functional downgrade.

I dont know exactly why, but my Serenade had a LOT of buzz/noise through the SE headphone connections and even a little through the balanced. Had clean power going to it, tried different sockets, power cables. All no good, so just sent ti back (to Amazon). But it did sound good and the R2R Dac a nice change, but I wasn't happy with the buzzing.

Z, I know you have no control over this but Topping's warranty and customer support is terrible. I had a A90D that only worked well for 4 months and then I had to ship it back to China which cost $100 USD and then I had had to wait 6 months for them to look at it. So this is probably a great DAC/AMP, but just realize that if something goes wrong, then you may have just wasted over $1k.
Er, anytime you have a co. where they make you ship something to China, that is a major problem. Years ago even with Sanyo/Fisher, etc., if you had to ship a unit back for repair, or replacement, you'd ship it to a domestic center or whatever. Shipping it overseas is not acceptable.
I also had the vendor tell me to lie about the customs value on the return (or else they would refuse it). Thankfully I bought through Amazon and they took it back when I went to them directly.

Same exact story with my A90D. Thankfully the seller took it back surely at their own loss. Topping wanted money and a lot of time to get it fixed.
I would deal with the site you are using first. Contact APOS before topping or Xduoo or any of those brands. It is probably easier for them to do an exchange with you then to try and repair.

So, basically, nothing can drive Tungsten. A70 Pro couldn’t and this cannot.
A70 pro CAN with the new DS, My personal Single sided is an older 9.0 driver and it was still hard.
Wondering if ifi's iCAN Phantom amp might not do a better job on driving Tungsten. Expensive solution though. And yet to be demonstrated. But that's an interesting path to explore...
