Why did they ever stop making movies like this? Funny, clean, irreverent and clever... James Garner was a talented actor. He could carry a movie like this effortlessly...

They got spaghetti sauce all over them. That was after about ten minutes of squeal squeal close of Jack's eyes squeal another closeup squeal closeup of Woody's eyes squeal and same again for about ten minutes. The conversation between Jim Garner and Jack Elam is a perfect illustration of why Garner was so widely popular as a star. A combination of friendliness, intelligence, humor and wisdom. How I'd have loved to have had a conversation with him.

James Garner is a classic, in the same vein as the likes of Jimmy Stewart. An elegant man, from a more civilized age. Actors and actresses these days feel like children compared to the greats of old.

Blazing Saddles, Support Your Local Sheriff, Support Your Local Gun Fighter, The Apple Dumpling Gang, The Frisco Kid, Maverick, Wild Wild West, Wagons East, Three Amigos, Goin' South, A Million Ways to Die in the West, The Shakiest Gun in the West, and City Slickers, are some I can remember.

I went to see this with my sisters around noon. We told mom how good it was and went to see it again later. We all told dad when he got home from work how good it was so we went to see it again. So, I saw it the first three times in one day (at 8 or 9yrs old). I still watch it annually (or maybe more) because it is just too good not to. That adds up to 50+ times I have seen this movie and I do not regret a single watch. To the whole cast and crew I say thank you for making one of the greatest comedies ever

I got to meet Garner when I was a busboy in Rancho Bernardo in 74'. Just a sweetheart of a man. Gene keeps saying "who?" when Brennen say's HE'S REALLY DONE IT NOW". Love it!

I took care of my great grandmother once a week so she could stay in her own house once a week and do errands around town. I used to watch old westerns with her because those were here favorite. She died a few months ago and I still miss her. Getting this in my recommended brought nice memories.

I always liked this movie! It was one of the few westerns made in the 60s and as a result a lot of the old actors who needed work got a job. Bruce Dern playing Joe in a rare comedy role, Jack Elam , Henry Morgan, and a host of other character actors who would soon find work in non-westerns appreciated the chance to show off their talents.

Dern usually played the villain, but his scariest role was "longhair" in "The Cowboys". I saw that on TV at the age of 6 and he gave me nightmares. Plus he's maybe the only onscreen character to kill the Duke!

I remember when I first saw this movie about 40 years ago or so with my dad. I'm not exactly sure what year it was, but I was a kid at the time. My dad was very serious all the time. Except when he watched this movie. He laughed and laughed so hard during this movie, he could barely breathe. I've never scene him laugh so hard. It was so fun to see him laugh like that, because he was such a serious man at home. I'd never scene him laugh like that before, or since, that day. I'll always remember this movie for that.

Love this movie as well as “Support Your Local Gunfighter”. Maybe the two best comedy westerns ever. James Garner was a great actor, men like him can’t be replaced.

Why did they ever stop making movies like this? Funny, clean, irreverent and clever... James Garner was a talented actor. He could carry a movie like this effortlessly...
Probably because the two or three knock-offs that followed this one weren't nearly as good. ;)
because spaghetti western was a thing , the people back then wanted something gretty , and the hero with a questionable moral compass .
Because we don't have producers, writers, directors and actors like that anymore. Well, maybe some of each category, but finding them and getting them together? Very unlikely.

The conversation between Jim Garner and Jack Elam is a perfect illustration of why Garner was so widely popular as a star. A combination of friendliness, intelligence, humor and wisdom. How I'd have loved to have had a conversation with him.
James Garner is a classic, in the same vein as the likes of Jimmy Stewart. An elegant man, from a more civilized age. Actors and actresses these days feel like children compared to the greats of old.
"You stay on that side of the line and everything should work out fine." "WHAAAAT???" That is such a classic scene and perfectly acted. You can just feel Joe's disbelief.
"Why that must've saved the life of whatever man was wearing that star." "Well it sure would've if it hadn't been for all them other bullets flying in from everywhere."
"Well I was in a hurry to save your life, I wasn't trying to group my shots..." - that's got to be one of the funniest lines ever spoke in a western.
I actually laughed out loud at that line.

My grandpa, may he rest in peace, loved watching Jack Elam in westerns. He always called him "Ol' Bug Eyes", and everyone in the family knew exactly who he was talking about when he said it.
Always played the bad guy in his earlier films then moved to more comedic roles like this and the doctor in cannonball run. Hilarious
And he was in some damn good movies: Vera Cruz, Gunfight at the OK Corral, Once Upon a Time in the West...

Blazing Saddles, Support Your Local Sheriff, Support Your Local Gun Fighter, The Apple Dumpling Gang, The Frisco Kid, Maverick, Wild Wild West, Wagons East, Three Amigos, Goin' South, A Million Ways to Die in the West, The Shakiest Gun in the West, and City Slickers, are some I can remember.

I went to see this with my sisters around noon. We told mom how good it was and went to see it again later. We all told dad when he got home from work how good it was so we went to see it again. So, I saw it the first three times in one day (at 8 or 9yrs old). I still watch it annually (or maybe more) because it is just too good not to. That adds up to 50+ times I have seen this movie and I do not regret a single watch. To the whole cast and crew I say thank you for making one of the greatest comedies ever

@@justjrandomuser Well, it's "Support Your Local Sheriff". Everybody had so much fun making it that most of them got together again the next year to make "Support Your Local Gunfighter", which is available for free on KZhead. Too bad "Sheriff" isn't.
I loved watching the movie "Maverick" and trying to ID all the old timers in it. Another fun James Garner movie. Oh, and that other feller too I guess.

I got to meet Garner when I was a busboy in Rancho Bernardo in 74'. Just a sweetheart of a man. Gene keeps saying "who?" when Brennen say's HE'S REALLY DONE IT NOW". Love it!
Smoooooth acting from James Garner one of the best in the business. He make it all seem so effortless, all the while it's hard work..
FUN FACT: Elam had walleye because in a childhood fight he had a pencil stuck in that eye, damaging the nerves that held the eye aligned.

The interaction between Jack and Jim is priceless.
I took care of my great grandmother once a week so she could stay in her own house once a week and do errands around town. I used to watch old westerns with her because those were here favorite. She died a few months ago and I still miss her. Getting this in my recommended brought nice memories.

Support You Local Sheriff was one I watched with dad in the early 80s. Made the year I was born actually. Great great movie. And its really nice to see Elam play the good guy.

Garner and Elam was a funny duo...I like how he faked the guy out telling him he took all the bullets out then to rub it in Unloaded it infront of him after he goes back inside HAHAHA!
And the callback to that in Unforgiven, when Little Bill did take 1 bullet out of English Bob's gun. And in the prison.

The "Support Your Local...." movies were insanely funny. Just about the funniest westerns until "Blazing Saddles" came out. Jack Elam is one of the best "heavies" in the movies, and his comedy work is made even funnier because of all the years he was the bad, BAD guy.

Blazing saddles was terrible.......they went for low hanging fruit. The Support your Local's were extremely well written and acted and intelligent humor.
Book Snake One was 'Sheriff', the other was 'Gunfighter'. Almost the same cast but not considered sequels.
Maverick, Rockford, Garner - classic, timeless cool.
James Garner is one of my favorite actors. I just loved how his characters were always so laid back.
Jake Elam was my favourite goody/baddie/character. Brilliant.

I always liked this movie! It was one of the few westerns made in the 60s and as a result a lot of the old actors who needed work got a job. Bruce Dern playing Joe in a rare comedy role, Jack Elam , Henry Morgan, and a host of other character actors who would soon find work in non-westerns appreciated the chance to show off their talents.

Bruce Dern could play a bad guy, a good guy, and a somewhere in-between guy. Damn, we had some pretty good movies in the sixties.

Shoobee63: A character he also played on "The Real McCoys" TV show! The cranky but wise old man, a character act which he started playing while in his 40s! Can you imagine this man singing and dancing on Broadway with Jimmy Durante?
Bullettube Saw an interview with Bruce Dern, he had a blast doing this movie. He loved working with these guys.

My favorite Bruce Dern movie will probably always be "The 'Burbs." Loved his performance in that one. =)

When I was a kid my dad came home with this movie from the rental store. He made us kids sit down and watch it. We were mad none of us wanted to see it. We laughed so hard through the whole movie. Been one of my favs ever since.

James Garner was full actor,handsome, funny, good actor, very versatile even singing and plus with charisma.

I saw an interview where Bruce said he had the most fun doing this movie. He loved working with Garner and director Burt Kennedy.

"Do I have to listen to him? He ain't nothing but the town character!" Has anyone posted the scene featuring Garner and Harry Morgan where they discuss the "departing" of Prudie's mother? Priceless stuff.
