How My Life Has Changed Since I Moved From America to Australia

I've lived in Australia on a working holiday visa for 8 months now, and I almost don't recognize who I was before I left the United States. This is my journey as a mid-20s woman who moved from New York City to chase my career goals to Sydney Australia to live out my dream of traveling full-time.

  • So many people just keep digging in to keep up with expectations that can have serious results for mental health. That you picked Australia to get yourself out of your stressful lifestyle seems to have been a stroke of luck, or was it. No explanation why you picked Australia. Having the sun beat down on you for mainly 12 months is a blessing but also the laid back nature of Aussies would certainly help. Added to a high level of wages, health care among other items of livability, you have seemingly hit the jackpot for yourself. Good story.

Australia has changed and become more stressful just like the rest of the western world sure, but we are still quite laid back compared to most, even the anzacs bro how many military’s are you going to see in world war 2 cruising around with shorts on having a laugh and strolling through a warzone like a tradie on lunch break.

    • @@Jackmonkey66666hghinnv Well if it's any consolation, I can't tell if you're trolling either. I mean telling me about what a bunch of aussie soldiers did in WW2? Newsflash, it's not the 1940s anymore and Australia today is nothing like what it was back then. People are laid back in small country towns, not in Sydney. Australians in the major cities are generally the total opposite of laid back. It's a very high stress, aggressive culture while being a politically correct nanny state at the same time. If you want to see what a laid back, friendly culture is like then go to southeast asia or south america.

      @earthwormjim3269@earthwormjim326929 күн бұрын
    • @@earthwormjim3269 bro are you faded that’s kinda the whole point of cities period, there’s no city on earth that is heavily populated that’s “laid back” or stress free that should be a no brainer. The ww2 reference was to point out the Aussie spirit at its finest is laid back and chill, just because it’s not like that in the cities doesn’t mean it’s not still a thing in Australia in general.

If you come here this is the tough part of Australia even though to get back home is a day away . Most return for this reason , but many regret it, too.

  • I was born in California and lived most of my life in San Jose. When I was 28 I realised that I didn’t like living there. I realised I always felt like I didn’t fit in. Later that year I traveled to Sydney for the fun of it. I liked Sydney, but I’m not a big city person. I decided to travel by way of Queensland on my way back to America. When I landed on the Gold Coast… I fell in love! And I knew I was home. For 30 years now I have lived joyfully in Queensland. I bought a home, started a business and became an Australian citizen. I went to university, met my wife, got married and raised a beautiful boy and we are looking forward to grandchildren. Just because you were born and raised in a country, doesn’t mean you will thrive there. Take a chance. Risk everything. And create a life worth living. Oh, and Welcome to Australia Marissa ❤

  • Marrisa this was a beautiful insite into finding an environment that can make you happy. I commend you on your great work presenting this well thought out narrative and wonderful delivery. The thing that makes Australia and New Zealand so different to other western based countries is the lack of class history to do with status and wealth. Australian and New Zealanders generally do not care about how you look or from where you came from or what you own. This is reflected in our friendly nature and laid back approach to life. This also inspires curiosity to explore our world and travel. As a migrant coming to Australia the one thing you will experience in the future is the feeling of no longer quite belonging to your birth country. This is because as your memory of what you remember and think is how it has always been will change with time and you will feel slightly alienated because it no longer matches what you hoped to expect. Just be ready for this and recognise that time changes everything. Some migrants get home sick and want to go back to their home country thinking they will go back to the fond memories only to find it no longer satisfies their desires and end up in a no win situation. I wish you all the success for you and hope that this beautiful country brings you much happiness and success. Cheers.
