Racing against others' ghost-laps in the DRL Simulator is the most fun I've had in an FPV simulator. With the new 3.0 release, physics match the real world closer than they ever have. The real question is, what would make you choose DRL simulator over another sim like Velocidrone or Liftoff? We'll go through the new 3.0 DRL Simulator release in this video.
---
The DRL Simulator is available on Steam at:
store.steampowered.com/app/64...
CLARIFICATION. All drone simulators compare simulated flight to real flight using various methods, including test bench measurements and wind tunnel tests. DRL is the first simulator to take a drone into a motion-capture studio and compare 3D drone flight to simulated outputs. Velocidrone is, without question, the preferred simulator of top MultiGP-style pilots. I don't mean to suggest that it's not a good simulator, or not worth checking out. I plan to review Velocidrone next, and hopefully when I dig further into it, I can figure out why I have had a bad experience with it in the past.
I just scrolled through the comments ... who deleted the comment by Velocidrone and why?
Here is the reason why the comments are removed: imgur.com/a/r9fsz3a Ashley has a response that he said he would post here, although I haven't seen him post it yet.
Please do a review of FPV Air 2, imho it's the most realistic Sim I've ever used
Go to Mr Steele "How to FPV" series... Watch "How To FPV? (Part 2) Controller and Sim Setup | START Flying!" on KZhead kzhead.info/sun/l7Owh5qIfYyLZpE/bejne.html Setup your drone as he shows and see if you like it.
Joshua Bardwell DRL is absolute garbage.
DRL doesn't have your yard tho :P
0/10 literally unplayable. Kidding aside though, I'm pretty impressed with the progress on DRL sim.
Thank God I'm sick of flying JB'S yard. Lol
Which one is it that has JB's yard? I feally like the UAVFutures test track that's in one of the DLCs for FPV Air II! Really fun!
LedChickenFPV Liftoff has his yard
Lol I was thinking the same
Hi guys. Twice in the video, a single frame of my face appears. This isn't in the original rendered file. It only happens when I upload to KZhead. I have rendered and uploaded three times now and it happens every time. I have no idea why. Just letting you know 1) you're not crazy, and 2) I didn't do it on purpose, like some weird joke.
Joshua Bardwell subliminal messages, no doubt. 🤙🤙
Sure sure but there's no need for subliminal messaging, we already love you.
I've actually seen a few videos that people have uploaded recently with random things like this in them
Been watching to much fightclub
"As of July 2015, more than 400 hours of video were uploaded to KZhead every minute, up from 300 hours per minute in November 2014." 3.5 years on, that statistic must be quite astronomical, so I guess an odd random frame here and there is to be expected :)
to be clear, I play all of the sims... but DRL has given me two opportunities to compete at a national level for a spot on the ESPN show. and they are always working with the community. i’ve got different clicks of friends who race on different sims, I keep coming back to DRL for the community and the continual commitment by DRL to improvement for said community.
This is the most polished well done sim it’s great to see drl give back to the community and in my opinion this sim is the most fun
Thanks for the review, Josh! Yours is the third I've watched and you've helped me decide to go with the DRL simulator. This is going to be fun!
Between simulators and tiny whoop style drones I have flown all through the cold and wet months and days. I can't complain.
I'm late to the party but I got the sim 2 weeks ago and I love it so much I'm now looking at getting a proper drone. At first it felt impossible and after 13 hours of playtime I've improved so much!
Awesome review JB, thanks. I didn't know about DRL simulator, looks like fun.
Oh, I almost forgot, they need to add race wings to the Sim. That would ripple the wing world and would give them more pilots. Not sure how many more but, would break the quad boredom that tends to happen. Could help them keep new pilots.
Wow. I never realized how much it’s been updated. Time to go check it out again
I love ur vlogs JB ur super knowledgeable bud! & i love ur sarcasm espically towards the end when u said see u next time in this series of simulators, whenever next time is going 2 be lol!! Anyhow, happy flying
I practice for 1/2 hour on drl before I go out and fly...needed it this winter due to -35 all winter. :)..havent been out in months.
Iv been watching your videos for a minute now. Every problem I ran into, I came to your channel. And every problem I had you solved and knew how to fix or tweak.. your a great teacher Josh, would love to learn more from you and fly with you.. thanks for all the info, I can always count on you to get me out of the jams I come across.
I bought this just now on the strength of your review, thanks! I'm just starting out so the quality of the training system is great to hear. Thanks!
I just bought DRL and have not found the exercises very helpful for a total beginner. They are too hard with no real instruction.
@@hyearwood1 at least it has some forms of ensruction
@@hyearwood1 stange as a semi newby (apart from landing some drones in a pond) I feel the training is excellent! They explain exactly what you need sometimes a bit to much even
7:42 *me frantically trying to find that Messanger message then skipping back 5 secs and hearing it again
yeah me lol
Cool, I'll jump back into the DRL simulator. Also, that chair makes you look like you have an epic mullet. :P
Can't unsee that now....
Best series ever! See y'all in 2020!
I just downloaded it....I'm about to go play now! Thanks for the review!
I've put a fair amount of time (hundreds of hours) into Liftoff, Velocidrone and Rotor Rush. I even qualified for DRL 2 years ago but didn't go. I also race real drones pretty regularly. At the end of the day, Velocidrone is the first sim I turn to for getting the best feel. I agree that it needs some tweaking to your liking before it really shines. I think where Velocidrone historically had a weakness, was in terms of ease of use for beginners. However the recent updates have gone a really long way towards addressing that, have you tried it recently Josh?
Thank you from video. I downloaded drl simulator yesterday. It is the best simulator. Now more practise and then is my maiden flight with Xhover Stingy V2.
I'm using this sim as a beginner, and one thing I found to be very helpful for altitude control and turning practice, is flying through the gaps in the blimp, and then lowering altitude to fly under the wing of the planes or, if I'm lined up correctly, through the engine.
Thanks, I started RC with trainer cord LOS fixed wing. Then got into Quads, with all the Demo/Beta versions when they were free. I'm glad to see that they have improved. Cost might be justified now.
I have to agree after going thru the Beta with DRL staff, the MULTIGP tracks feel Light. in discussion with DRL staff in charge of the Beta upgrade, we deduced that the polygon count of items in the MGP tracks are lower than DRL tracks, thus the Simulator "feels" different or lighter in the MGP Courses. Yes the Physics are Correct for the Drone but the course around is may need to be factored in as well. what you can try is changing the gravity factor for downward force, and playing with a few other items in physics. The BRAND New version, just released hours ago, has addressed alot of issues with flight performance and the aircraft in the sim, really feel locked in once you dial in your rates. you should come visit on one ofthe DRL stream nights on Twitch, i am Sure Tony and Travis would love to have you on. maybe even let you race? great video!!
Is it still in beta because it doesn't feel good to me at the moment? Cheers👍
@@kingyfpv4787 no it is not. Go over to drl discord channel for support
I am just getting into FPV and have been watching your videos like crazy. I have seen you on Ken Heron’s TNL and tuned you out in the past as I am a camera drone guy. That all changed after doing a ride along with Docmurdoc. I should have watched a few more of your videos before I bought my controller but I fixed that. Thanks for all the great info you provide. I will be getting this sim. By the way I am an Old Fart in my late 60’s.
FPV Freerider Recharged - what it has that others perhaps don't is the immediacy of 'flight'. Powering up TX, plugging it into your PC, starting Freerider and being able to 'fly' can take seconds, literally. So I can have a quick 5 minute session and I'm not wasting time waiting for the sim to load. Also, I can play the Android version of Freerider on my phone with my actual TX by plugging it straight in.
Android version? I going to try right now
You've got me sold on my 1st Steam purchase. DAMN YOU, JOSHUA!!! Now to choose between this or Liftoff. You seem to lean toward this and all the technical research that went into it, it's got to be pretty damn good. I'll be sure to find the trainer quite useful. I'm brand new to the racing and freestyle side of this drone world. I guess my first purchase will be a better radio so I develop better habits with what I'll actually be using instead of just getting by with something and then possibly having to learn again with a different radio. I'm also not going to crash a radio, or goggles for that matter.
DRL is so cool, just tested that my PsP controller in there gamepad tester to discover that it works. Brilliant! Thanks for the review bud.
I really like The Gates Of Hell! Thanks for this review!
It's official. I finally got my radio and I committed to Steam and actually purchasing DRL, my first game of any kind I've paid for in a LOOOOOONG time! Damn it, JB! Making me be all legit on the computer software thing for a change. Now I just need Bardwell's yard to train and practice in! LOL
Very interesting. Gonna check it out. I have liftoff, velocidrone and fpv air2. So far I like fpv air2 the best, love uvafutures track😊. Have harder time in liftoff and Velocidrone, Probably my settings aren't the best. Happy flying 👍🤓
Well done! Can’t wait till next year see your next- Sim
Can’t wait till I get a new laptop to try this sim. DRL 2020 here I come. You should also test out FPV Air 2 if you haven’t already. I love that one. I’ve got mine set up almost like my race quads. It’s not perfect but it is pretty good. 👍
Love DRL. It's a great sim and I just got to the point buying a real freestyle drone and plugged in my Taranis QX7 to the DRL sim and with the help of Tyler at rotor riot I got some real-world rates that I'm plugging into my real drone and the sim is even better than before. It seems very realistic and lifelike and I think I'll be a better pilot because of DRL Sim.
Don't really have a favourite but I did use velociDrone to learn the basics before flying the real thing and I didn't have any troubles with it, love the videos 👍🏼👊🏼🤩
I have tried all of the major sims for FPV (and helis) and DRL is my favorite mainly because out of the box it is the closest to real freestyle but the biggest reason is that it performs very well even with minimal computer specs. I run it on my macbook air all the time with no stuttering or problems. LiftOff simply can't run well on it even at the minimum quality settings.
I've had DRL sim for two months now without realizing the 'rival-mode'... thank God for JB!
DRL simulator is the best and the reason why is it's very accurate! I'm a newbie and I've bought a lot of drones none of which I've really flown because I want to get better in the simulator first so that I have less crashes and less repair. DRL simulator has made me feel more confident in my abilities and I started just freestyling and now I'm actually doing the races but I just started doing races eventually my skills will grow, thanks Joshua.
I just got the DRL simulator and holy crap I never realized how difficult it was to fly a drone.
hey so i just got a laptop and dont know how to download it, please help
@@evanlebaron8643 do you have steam?
Looks pretty interesting, JB! 😃 I use to run Liftoff, but... Who knows, maybe I try DRL too. 😊
Thank you for this video. DRL really helped me to learn to fly fpv.
Did you try any other Sims? Would you recommend DRL for someone who has never flown?
@@thezebiano I didnt try other sims so I cant compare them. However I´ve never flown before and after few hours in DRL I could pilot my quad with no problems and do some simple tricks. I can recommend it.
@@projectill Thank you!
I just downloaded it and I gotta say the training mode on DRL is way better than lift off. I'm a total noob but I'm having fun learning.
Hi JB, I just entered FPV. Got my Taranis Q X7, DRL Sim and I've put my first couple of hours flying and learning basics in training mode, knowing absoluttely nothing. At the end of the day, I was literally fighting with one of last training missions in category "THE BASICS", where you're supposed to pop some baloons following ideal path, which is going up and down and is full of turns and leads thru the city streets between buildings etc. I had really difficult time out there and I felt something's probably wrong. "It can't be so hard. I'm still at - the basics - category, right?" But I took my time a starting to practice my muscle memory to fly smooth thru this enviroment with some confidance, smooth turns, throttle and speed management. I managet to record some decent paths, but I couldn't get off that feelig, something's not right and "why I'm not allowed to do full rolls and flips?" Then I discovered that there exists flying modes - Angeled and ACRO and learned about the difference between them (also from your channel), and realized THAT'S IT! .. I fly the Angeled / Auto leveling mode in the simulator and immediately understood I need to fly in ACRO mode. It even naturally force me to behave like in acro mode. At first I was naturally trying to add Roll into my turns. But then I found it not effective (in Auto leveling) so I started focus not to doing that, because I thought it's a bad habbit I need to avoid. Then I found out, that Roll has something to do to smooth and controlled turns, but in ACRO mode. I know, this is long story, but I'm really very new in this. I just want to ask. How I can switch DRL sim to ACRO mode at first, to be able to learn how to fly from scratch in right way?
I love Shendrones frames! Andy Shen is the man!
I have only played Liftoff, DCL, and DRL sims, but to me Liftoff feels the most real to my quad. It is the one that looks the most real as well with very realistic static and how the details begin to drop as your drone gets further away. But I do love the tracks on DRL. The best sim to use? If I could only buy one: for freestyle Liftoff, for racing DRL.
Hooked on fpv about 30 sec. after first seeing it on ESPN 2 a couple years ago.
Yep, out of service is my go to map. I do not play it much as it has not been as close to real flight as I wanted. However every update they have done from the beta has improved it and made it closer to real life, there is a new update that I have yet to try. I do wish they would add 3d however.
I have bought Liftoff some time ago just to find out if fpv drone flying is a hobby for me. As a total noob like me would do I grabbed the fastest badass drone to fly and after zillions of crashes, and seeing start counter more than actual flying I was near to let it all go. But then I tried Obsession with 6 inch props which is so slow that I actually started to finish races. After that I was getting better after each flight and eventually I could fly faster drones. Hope this helps someone that is struggling like I was ;)
I really enjoy the map in Liftoff named JoshuaBardwell's house.😀 And recently I purchased the DRL simulator and played more for nowadays. Hope they can add the map too.
Great Vid!! Will you be updating or extending your training Vids maybe including some trick training in a Sim??
Just installed it and must say its well worth the money. Was(and still i am) Liftoff fanboy, but must say DRL behaves much closer to what flying my real life quads is. Only thing i am missing are common frames you can encounter in the field meetups like Alien/Martian, Armattan or Rotorama frames. Hope that ll come with time.
Lurkers Lair they are coming my friend.
DRL was the first sim I tried back when it was brand new. I was very unimpressed with the feel of it back then. From there I went to liftoff which felt quite a bit better. Then pilot friends told me about Velocidrone which in my opinion felt like the closest thing to real life. Fast forward in time to where your yard was implemented into Liftoff, and I was surprisingly impressed. Now after seeing the update in physics to DRL I gotta say I'll be jumping ship again to see what it's like. Looks like I will continue using all three and enjoy the wonderful improvements along the way...
did you retake DRL? I had the same feeling. Tried DRL, sucked, tried Liftoff, felt a little better. Went to velocidrone and hell yeah! That´s the only one I use as it feels close to real. thinking about buying DRL but not totally convinced.
What do you think about all three now?
gotta love competition, who's the best now?
Liftoff has 3D-Mode, I would love to see you giving it a try josh ;D
I have liftoff but will definitely be trying DRL.
Use liftoff currently. Think i should give DRL sim a try... thanks for sharing.
I miss the Bardwell's Yard map ;)))
Thank josh I have lift off but this seems much better. Thanks for the advice
I only have liftoff and I am a beginner pilot. The training mode is overwhelming. The quads are insanely responsive compared to the little micro drones I've mostly flown in real life. It sounds nice that DRL Sim cuts out some of the other controls when focusing on teaching one element.
Gave up on drones. Still fun to watch your channel and use sims
The DRL out of service map holds an aircraft I used to work on. I am gonna get it.
I’m so glad they updated the physics I could never fly the sim right before the update. i got to see the version 1 when the game was still free. It’s so great to race the current version.
The physics is still shit I find flying the real thing to be so much easier than it lol
@@elxero2189 its what i felt lol. I think liftoff or velocidrone more accurate
Your observations are interesting. I started with Liftoff, flown it for a while and then when I bought Velocidrone I just couldn't got back, it was so much better. After flying Velocidrone throughout the winter I found myself twice as confident and actually almost twice as fast on real world gates. Go figure. :)
Velocidrone is cool, I just dislike their drm. It's inconvenient when youre like me and switch between laptop and desktop to game. I tried liftoff and although it looks nice and feels better off the bat, velocidrone feels way better if you mess with the settings and tune a bit
Those single frame blinks- Tyler Durden was here :) Great review Josh
I have no idea how that happened. KZhead did it to the file AFTER I uploaded it.
I started using DRL Sim last year before I built my 1st fpv quad. It's a great learning tool. Why did I choose DRL ? Because of the DRL RAcing League on TV ! I've tried a few other "drone" sims. DRL Sim just feels right & is my go to for FPV sims. I prefer Real Flight for every thing else RC related.
Yooo u gotta continue the series!
Velocidrone physics/black box is close but....by default it’s setup for a high end Computer. Velocidrone video tutorials take you through this and it makes a big difference to having the settings matched to your computer. Once you get it right, it’s pretty locked in...but if you just crank everything to max you get the infamous “floaty” effect.
And the velocidrone coaching/learning to fly/tricks series is very good and worth having the same “tracks” to practice on...
Real flight homie!
I started practicing with the old old DRL before MultiGP and eventually switch to Velocidrone and havent looked back. It simply felt a lot closer to my ultra light racing drone.
Velocidrone simply feels more like any drone, even my ultra heavy freestyle rigs.
Thank you!
Fpv freerider: cheap and runs on my cherry trail tablet/Netbook in Linux and win 10. No trouble setting up my flysky fs-i6x with the FS-SM100. Also I've the android app and can practice on my mobile with my transmitter. Favorite Map: two towers A lot of features missing, but it's okay.
Grabbed it. Need to decide now between Taranis or Jumper now
Another great review. I do have a question though, If you had to pick one best simulator which do you prefer? I'd like to get into MultiGP racing and understand that the MultiGP recommends the DRL Sim but that most racers use the Velocidrone and Liftoff is also really good. I dont want to buy all three. Any recommendations?
Great video JB yea they are kickin' like chicken! How do I bring up the HUD in the DRL sim specifically the crosshair and horizon bar? I actually use those. thanks!
I have Liftoff, Velocidrone, FPV Freerider recharged, and FPV Air 2 and I prefer FPV Air 2. You can set your rates and PIDs like in betaflight so the stick feels like the real thing. They are not to the point where you can choose a frame, motors and other components and have a sim that feels exactly like that build but the flight model they have is similar to a typical modern quad and the fact that you can set your rates like in betaflight is really good. The Freestyler DLC has 2 really good maps for freestyle. I`ve played those sims back to back and Liftoff and fpv freerider recharged feels so 2015, velocidrone is good but not quite as good as FPV air 2 but it has much more levels. Drl sim has so many mixed reviews that I don't really want to spend 20 box on it.
MurphysLaw996 The DRL Sim has been around awhile and a ton has changed. Pay attention to the more recent reviews
Great video as always however since you were reviewing sims would have liked a comparison of pc specs . After all the better sims may not be the best for some of us with lowers specs and a crap pc will make a good sim very bad.You did include this in your previous video and would like to see more in future videos keep up the good work and refill the jar.
You probably won’t answer this...but you are my maestro, my go to for anything Taranis, anything drone, and anything “How Too”. I really appreciate your content!
How can I answer it if you don't ask any question?
Joshua Bardwell 🙃One day I will! Keep your great content coming!
Love this sim
Thtanks for a review Josh! Yes, you pinned that - out of the box velocidrone feels like a plastic. See Steele vid about getting Veloci close to reality. A LOT of tuning! Also Veloci just eats RAM for breakfast. So you need a near-top hardware to run. About DRL - dont use stock quads!!. Right at the beggining I created my quad with specs similar to my real quads. And it feels VERY like real quads!! MUCH better the Liftof really in which I worked pretty much last year. P.S. Dont forget about Rotor Rush too.
Try liftoff again. The physics 3.0 update is excellent.
@@JoshuaBardwell I flew it pretty regulary til past two weeks. So I am know what Im talking. And I also built a custom quad in Liftoff similar to mines, and it worked good too. But DRL is closer to reality (with custom quad), specially the trottle/thrust/airspeed feeling and inertia.
I'm swapping between DRL and Velocidrone to learn how to fly acro. I'm having a great time I both. Eventually I'd like to get Liftoff and Tryp, but I've got more than enough to play with at the moment. Flying with a Radiomaster Zorro - my biggest complaint with the Zorro is playing in sims drains the battery pretty fast. It would be nice if it just powered the radio from USB when playing sims. I asked Radiomaster support about this but they don't offer a solution.
I visited my grandma last year and she was watching drl. That's how I knew it was happening.
I love this post. Says so little but so much. DRL is basically a corporate retreat just like Tough Mudder was (DRL is all the same people FYI). But you don't get a day off work, you can't actually spectate an event, nor can you see any episode after it airs exactly once. You do however get your choice of 2 souvenir T-Shrts. "Oh what's that Jet? You were 2 time DRL champ, and your fans want a DRL T-shirt with your name on it? Just like literally every other sports fan does? Sorry we know nothing about that and literally have the worst marketing and promotion ever. Tell them to try our sim instead. The newest version only has 330 ms of latency. And our new drone is EVEN HEAVIER!!! Isn't that great! Go tell Nurk" The abject failure that is DRL in a nutshell.
ive tried a number of sims now and in my opinion the DCL one is the closest to real world drone flying as u can get the actual simulator is used for tha actual DCL qualifying heats the ps4 and xbox versions are being released mid feb so cant wait for that
Nice video I'm on the FreeRider at this point .
i love the DCL simulator! :-)
Please review FPV Air 2. I love that sim and would really like to hear your opinion of how it compares to others. I have heard multiple people say after flying in FPV Air 2 they beat their records when they went back to other simulators. Thanks!
I have Velocidrone, LiftOff, DRL. After fiddling with LiftOff it is my favorite for freestyle type flying practice. The "huck it" feel for off throttle punch outs and power loops feels the best. Downside is the majority of the maps are small and geared towards racing. But I like the feel of LiftOff the most. DRL doesnt feel as good without a LOT of parts changing and editing to get the right feel. But DRL has some MASSIVE environments that lets you really explore and just have fun. To me, if the goal of the DRL sim is for you to practice and compete in DRL. Get it and stay as close to spec as possible and do tons of practice to know the ins and outs of that sim with stock settings. Be dialed into THAT sim and what you will be dealing with should you make it to the DRL tryout event. DRL is definitely the most goal oriented and unique of the sims in my opinion. Velocidrone was my first sim and I wasnt hugely impressed because it was an earlier build and scale/behavior of it seemed strange. Worked well for racing but just kinda exploring/freeroaming was difficult to stay in proximity to objects. I hear a big update to Velocidrone is coming so it is time to try it out again.
I downloaded it last night...took an hour.
Have you tried rotor rush it’s a lot of fun
All the Sims are improving still. I like what you said about liftoff, that was my same experience. As of now im sticking to velocidrone because it gets the job done, but I might give the others a shot just for fun someday
There are quite a few awesome player-created maps for freestyle on Liftoff; but using those basic "drawing board" blocks, so the visuals aren't exactly realistic.
DividingByZero FPV update just dropped today for 3.0... give it a go..
One question on the physics: In both Velocidrone and even moreso in Liftoff my main gripe is that it feels like you flying in 0.7G, that is, the quad doesn’t fall nearly fast enough. When I’ve been playing a lot of Liftoff and then go to fly IRL I always have some really close calls and can’t nearly pull off the same tricks before I’m on the ground in a violent manner. How is DRL specifically in this aspect? Is it the same “slomo diving”?
I get that same feeling that its latency and cant go through a gate, but its on lift off. On velocidrone is kind of okay but on Dcl it was perfect for me the moment I flew first time, felt really similar to real life quad. So, here is a video for you to make. How to get any sim to fly almost real world feeling. Thankx
Hi Josh, watch all your videos and love them ,don't understand all of them 'but still watch.I'm an older guy who just retired and took up mini quad flying. My computer skills are not that good but I'm learning. My question to you is how do you set up transmitter radio so you can use the simulator?
Chris Pearson I’d be happy to help ya out if you need some help. If you’d like you can friend request me on any of the social media accounts, or email me directly KaNoodle@DRL.io I’ll help ya .. no problem!
I bought DRL liftoff and velo several years ago. I use velocidrone most of the time. Liftoff when I want the mining track... haven’t even updated drl. Looks like I should
Definitely should update :)
Your intro is damn near a threat in the South lol. "You gonna learn today" is what you say when you are about to whoop some ass here in Georgia.
I grew up in Georgia and now live in Tennessee so I'm no stranger to the south. Context is everything.
I have liftoff and velocidrone. Liftoff is fun and I’m decent at it. Liftoff gets boring quickly. I usually find myself doing freestyle at the golf course. Velocidrone is garbage and I consider it to be a huge waste of money (probably because I suck at drone flying). At least I can fly a track on liftoff. I’m interested in DRL it looks kind of cool.
I am surprised you didn't mention Rotor Rush, I found it to be pretty realistic. I tried the Velocidrone demo and found it to be extremely laggy on the control inputs so was completely unusable for me (maybe the same issue you had?)
Well it is about time, I contributed a lot of comments and advice with the DRL developers when they first dropped the sim, they had issues with floatiness and drag, you could not slow the quad down or hover without it becoming so unstable it was unflyable, you basically had to full send the entire time to maintain any type of control. The developers did respond to my comments but instead of listening they made excuses and argued with me that there physics were perfect. I finally gave up on the DRL simulator especially when they started charging money for it. I have flown them all Rotor Rush, Liftoff, DRL, Freeryder, Hot props and still think Velocidrone is by far the most realistic flight experience and best over all simulator. Keep in mind the purpose of the simulator is to emulate the real experience so that you can take that training out into the real world with you. It is much more a video game that is fun to play. Velocidrone also uses the Betaflight PID control screen so you also get experience with the PID and Rate settings as they are in the real world and that is a big part of the learning curve when getting into this hobby. If you enjoy playing video games and don't care about the realism then maybe DRL sim is for you, if you want to learn to fly a quad, go with Velocidrone.
Have you tried the new physics update featured in this video?
Seems like you tried the version from 1.5 years ago, and yeah it wasn't great. That being said, DRL Sim 3.0 has updated and validated physics, give it a try and let us know how it is now!
@@JoshuaBardwell Not yet but I am tempted
Hey Josh.. Do you think this is gonna be a PC only or do you think they will push it to console. Im just getting into the whole drone thing and i know this DRL sim would be dope to DL on my xbox.
Finally got to try this simulator. clearly I needed to do this before going out on the field with actual damage :D however, I did get motion sickness while playing it for the first time (after a couple of hrs.) is it different in RL? I have tried to not move my head, looking into the turn, but its stronger than me...
Hey, Great video dude! :-) Is it possible to use a DJI Mavic Air Controller for the simulator? Greetings
I would love to hear your thoughts on DCL which currently is a free demo on Steam. Feels really good to me and some lovely tracks even just in its demo state.
Regarding velocidrone: they claim they improved the physics and quad behavior and whatnot but for me, the older versions of the game felt more natural. I still play the v1.11 and that was the last version that i can get to feel like my freestyle rig. And generally, velocidrone might be awesome for racing but the stock settings are way overpowered for freestyle training (for a typical gopro carrying 600g freestyle rig) and the drag is a bit too low, so the main things i do is select less agressive props, increase the weight of the quad, decrease the power and increase the drag. in the latest versions i cant get the max power properly without screwing up the hover point completely or without adding some weird throttle curves. Gettng the throttle feel to be as close to the real thing as possible is the most important thing in simulators. Overall, the latest versions feel a bit off to me too but the older verions are spot on.
I tried velocidrone and liftoff, but for me, neither were anywhere near as much fun as Rotor Rush which I still use. It seems to be well off the radar for most though, possibly because of their pricey subscription model.
I agree, I've tried most of the top sims and I still think Rotor Rush feels the best. Admittedly, I haven't tried the new DRL sim yet. I was hoping to see someone compare the two before shelling out another $20. (JB?)
Having only tried Liftoff and Velocidrone, one thing that irritates me is the lunar-gravity feel, especially Liftoff feels weird. Velocidrone was really bad for me up until I followed MrSteele’s settings with just some tweaks, but it’s not perfect either. But with liftoff, everytime I’ve been playing it alot, I get the feeling for some tricks and then go try them for real, and find my RL quad has about half the air time of Liftoff. For races it doesn’t bother me that much, but when just freestyling it just feels like the quad has some magic anti-grav system.
