Boeing put under Senate scrutiny during hearings on aircraft maker's safety culture

An engineer at Boeing said Wednesday that the aircraft company, in rushing to produce as many planes as possible, is taking manufacturing shortcuts that could lead to jetliners breaking apart.
“They are putting out defective airplanes,” the engineer, Sam Salehpour, told members of a Senate subcommittee.
Salehpour was testifying about Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner, hundreds of which are in use by airlines, mostly on international routes. He spoke while another Senate committee held a separate hearing on the safety culture at Boeing.
The company has been under multiple investigations and in crisis mode since a door-plug panel blew off a 737 MAX jetliner during an Alaska Airlines flight in January.

    • Daniel, we should note that Boeing did not cause his death in the first place, several news agencies confirmed that he died from self-inflicted wounds.

    • Airlines aren’t responsible for making or maintaining the planes which is where ALL the problems arise, just make sure the pilots are certified and well rested and they are fine, of course they will have to focus on making a profit, also generating profit from passengers is ALOT more difficult than generating from selling planes, they are more than justified to focus more on profit than Boeing.

    • How can you say that you have no idea it’s a business like any other the quality that is put in to 99% of those planes thanks for the hard-working Washington residence and don’t doubt the quality. Blame the leaders for the cut they make to make the business profitable.

    • Mechanics/ assemblers only do what the ENGINEERS tell them to do and HOW. I should know, I worked for a major commercial aircraft repair station. And even we struggled to understand why engineers wanted things done a certain way. We were mechanics. We knew how to put parts together or take it apart... not the WHY engineers wanted.

  • Unfortunately Boeing isn't the only company that pays more attention to their stock prices. That's pretty much every company out there. It's just that Boeing is not a company that can afford to be profits first safety second. No aircraft company can have that mentality and survive. Boeing is big enough with a past culture of quality engineering they should be able to recover, and maybe regain what they've lost. It was the McDonald Douglas executives that changed the internal culture of the company.

  • At what point does the ground crew take responsibility for the maintenance of their own airplanes most of these things could’ve been caught with visual inspections. The short time I worked for the ground crew for Alaska Airlines I was always looking for issues on the planes. It wasn’t even necessary for me to do it, but I was trying to protect the people on the planes.
