    • Also during the sequence where Lebowski gets drugged, the dancers pulled a prank on Jeff Bridges by stuffing various wigs in their underwear so that most of the hairs were spilling out. Bridges was obviously the only one who could see it and he had to act amazement while trying not to laugh.

    • Yet, if I remember correctly, the narrative device is that of the old gumshoe detective films - that the protagonist is usually in every scene driving the plot. As you mentioned, the Dude refuses to engage with the plot; a discrete discord is created because culturally we're used to this narrative frame of reference having a protagonist engaging heavily with the plot .

  • One of the most quotable movies of all time. It was a stroke of genius to take oldschool mystery/noir tropes and put them through the filter of modern-day California. All the twists the plot takes (Lebowski isn't actually rich, what happened to the briefcase, etc.) don't really matter because the mystery of what happened to Bunny was never important, and instead of a cast of suspicious characters it's just a bunch of weird California stereotypes.

    @BloodSportA2@BloodSportA22 жыл бұрын

  • Since I left a long rambling comment on Patreon, I won't fully repeat it here, other than to say I really hope you watch more Coen brothers films. I think you would especially love 'Fargo' and 'Raising Arizona' (John Goodman is so good in that one and his first of many appearances in their films). Also, their film 'No Country for Old Men' is my favorite film of all time (well, for now) and it's a master class in every aspect of filmmaking. Definitely NOT a comedy, though, but so suspenseful. My ex-wife (well, the second one) and I had our birthday party at the bowling alley where they shot this film before they sadly - and stupidly - tore it down. They gave us a bowling pin for all the guest to sign that I still have.

  • One cool thing about this movie is that every time the Dude says anything significant, it was taken from someone else’s quote in a previous scene in the movie. One example is when he tells Mr Lebowski that this aggression will not stand, he heard former President Bush say it on TV while he was at Ralph’s buying Half & Half in the beginning of the movie.

  • Maude Lebowski (Julienne Moore) is speaking with what’s called a Mid-Atlantic accent, which is an artificial accent that blends British and American accents (hence the name). It was used a lot in movies from the 1930s and ’40s to mark a character as being highly educated and/or upper class, and since it was just an auditory trope, it basically no longer exists (one character from the later seasons of _Bojack Horseman_ uses it, but that’s because she’s a parody of Hildegard Johnson (Rosalind Russell) in _His Girl Friday_ from 1940). The dream sequence with all the bowling imagery is _also_ a throwback to that era. The big dance number with dozens of women in fancy costumes was very popular in those days, and you can see the specific “camera dives between a bunch of women’s legs” shot at around the 1 minute mark of this trailer for _42nd Street_ from 1933: kzhead.info/sun/dKyxgLypbHyVoIk/bejne.html

For another Coen Brothers movie that I think you'll really enjoy, check out "Raising Arizona" with Nicolas Cage. It's the movie that introduced me to the Coen Brothers and is amazing. She was also the singer for Til Tuesday before she went solo and did various other things. And, though no one ever seems to notice, after the visit to the doctor, the song he's jamming to... "ooh, oooh, oooh, looking out my back door." Not like that that was a coincidence. It's interesting that the chair in the door thing usually gets the biggest laughs of the whole movie.
