It’s been called the biggest art theft in history - thousands of statues stolen from temples across Cambodia and sold to private collectors and international museums, including here in Australia.
Now a team of art sleuths, on behalf of the Cambodian Government, are on a mission to bring home the country’s cultural heritage.
In this episode of Foreign Correspondent, the inside story of how Cambodia’s stolen antiquities are being tracked and returned in a global treasure hunt.
South-East Asia correspondent Mazoe Ford travels with the restitution team as they journey across the country and over borders to identify, trace and reclaim Cambodia’s missing treasures.

  • I visited Cambodia for the first time recently. Such a beautiful country with kind people. I appreciate Brad Gordon and the team. I appreciate museums and countries around the world who recognize their wrong doing and return these precious antiquities. Please continue to return these historical artifacts. I hope to return to visit Cambodia again one day.

    • Nowadays, in Cambodia there is a propaganda to distract people from this and social issues. There’s only faking arguments, created events to attract people attention. So most people do not care about this

  • Ancient treasures of Cambodia are priceless,they belong to Cambodia and they are the national symbols of Cambodia.   • As a Cambodian who resides in Australia, I am so thankful that this kind of investigation happen at this present time. Obviously, seeing these statues and artefacts which have been written in a wrong history as it belongs to Thailand/Vietnam in the National Gallery, does impact a lot on the people of Cambodia and this is what we as Cambodians could not tell the world that those are ours.

    • One negative thing I can see about threatening with arrests is that wouldn't that prevent the criminals coming forward or being honest? You might miss out on returning some of these items that way.

  • Now it's also time for the British Museum to return all their stolen art-works to their original owners! With all the technology available today, reasonable facsimiles could be made of stolen items sitting in museums (and private collections), enabling the return of many of the original artifacts to their countries where they were stolen from!
