Gershwin was ahead of his time composer i love any Gershwin songs this was a Masterpiece
It might sounds exaggerated, but I consider Porgy and Bess as the greatest pieces of music ever. Of course Gerhswin has been inspired a lot by Verdi, Wagner, Bizet and probably Puccini but he eventually composed an outstanding opera like absolutely no other (and I am talking about the whole original piece, which lasts at least 195 minutes). George Gershwin is a quite underrated composer for what he brought to music history, especially with his orchestral works and he was surely one of the finest composers ever.
This beautiful opera is a feast for the soul.Amazing performance...
OK. Now that you have listened to 40 minutes of some of the best opera ever written, is there any question that Gershwin was America's greatest compose? This is music making at its best. The melodies, the harmonies, and the orchestration may just have been too good for its early critics who didn't know what to make of this Brooklyn-born genius. In 2021 it is obvious that this is music to compare with Mozart, Wagner, and Puccini. It is American music through and through. This performance was just marvelous and a good time was had by all. I am drained.
Makes Copland look so pedestrian by comparison

All this performance is heartwarming!
They master is extraordinary. It's utterly bone chilling how well they are prepared.
Amazing performance of this beautiful opera. The Cape Town opera choir are full of fun.
no tenor, no bariton. Why?
How can you not appreciate these stunning arias and choruses !
What a sublime mixture of opera, gorgeous score by the incredible George Gershwin and beautiful voices. I love the minimalist choreography.
This performance was so beautiful I’m blown away, thank you for the upload.
BRAVISSIMO CAPE TOWN OPERA CHORUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bravo!
Phenomenal performance! Porgy and Bess is one of my favorite opera pieces by George Gershwin. ❤️
What a great Voice( and Jacket) for Musa Ngqungwana.
Black singers are the best. Their voices are not human. Extraordinary performance
Bravo bravo bravo 🇧🇷🥰🏳🌍🏳🌎🏳🌏💐💎🎼🎶🙌🙌
Extremely good performance, and so full of light, with beautiful voices and fun! Great
Ì can not even describe how much I love this...
Ungorgettable legacy from Gershwin!!
I really like Ms. Aaron's voice, controlled but easy sounding. Summertime - tempo on that song is so important, if a slower tempo is used, letting the rhythmic pulse lessen isn't going to help keep the feeling moving forward. My Man's Gone Now works much better. Loved the chorus! Gershwin was simply amazing.
GENIAL !!!!! Gracias mil gracias
This concert is so good and so much fun!!
Leoyatine price great opera singer sing Summer Time
So beautiful it brings tears to my eyes!
Over the top !!!!😊
Wonderfull.....I love it...
Such a beautiful sound from the orchestra!
Bravo! What an excellent presentation of a master piece.
Bravo! Outstanding performance!!
This is magnificent. Thank you. I think I already like this as much as the William Warfield/ Leontyne Price album.
That's awesome!
Just great !!!!!
Wonderful!
When I was a child, we went to Washington, DC, and I saw a Navajo weaving doll in the gift shop at the Smithsonian. I HAD to HAVE it! My mother bought it for me. I studied it and kept it for about 40 years.
Your mother was ahead of her time 😊❤️
The Gershwing spirit was missing. A very much performance...phenomenal..
What an amazing voice from the lady who sang 'summertime'....
Fabulous
Gershwin’s best work imo…above ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ or ‘American in Paris’. A truly American opera that can stand with the great Italian works in scope and cultural value.
Cest formidable
Exelenti.
Wonderfull
They should have also sang "I loves you Porgy", "A Red-Headed Woman" and the first chorus of the third act…
Too bad, but that’s fine anyway.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
be be best!!!!
MAGISTRAL .-.-.-
Nice
Damn the singers look sharp!
that look of the others in the choir at 5:23
Hope we were convincing enough :)
4:42 Kingly clap?👏

Beautifully sung. I just wish they didn't slow down the tempo so much on some of the numbers. The uptempo pieces really gives the listener's ear a break from the heavy storyline of this opera.
The ballads are all conducted *notably* slower than these are usually performed here in the United States.
Espetacular
C quoi le tempo
que de tremolos !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Too bad that this piece is basically unstagable in Germany. You would have to import the whole cast and probably even half of the musicians to get it right.
Or just recruit from different communities. There's still plenty of jazz in Europe to make it happen.
They did import the cast, but unfortunately with the wrong ethnic background. And in reference to jazz in Europe, yes there's a lot of good jazz in Europe, and more particularly, in Germany and this orchestra has shown it can handle it. But the type of bluesy American jazz that stems from the oppressed Negroes in the early 20th century and influences some of Gershwin's works, is unique and even some American symphony orchestras can't get it right.
@@bryangl1 They sang for German audience. People liked it because they cannot differ the things you mentioned. We are very happy here to listen sometimes a life concert of this opera !
@@helbiglilian3 Oh yes, I fully understand that. If you can't have an ideal performance (and what's an ideal performance anyway) it's better to have at least a good performance, and this is a good performance, than none at all.
There are enough black singers singing in Germany to cast this opera. The only real problem is the chorus. The Cape Town oO/watch?v=3EXndPGTPm0
Everytime I hear them my soul gets happy and I hate America even more and no I'm not Puerto Rican.
drop the hate. God is LOVE.
Well the Soprano did not do justice at all especially Serenas aria it was ...........
Isn't this cultural appropriation. ??😂
This is the first time I've been disappointed by a performance from this orchestra. Overall, the interpretations are not very idiomatic starting with "Summertime" which is beautifully sung but completely lacks the correct feel. At times diction is poor; at other times the orchestra is too "heavy"; generally the interpretations are often too rigid. It's very disappointing to me to find fault with any performance from Frankfurt but overall this is not good Gershwin. For comparison, watch the 2002 Lincoln Center Production of the complete work (poor sound unfortunately).
I'm not surprised. European and especially german orchestras simply have a completely different style of music making. It takes a very skilled conductor and loads of extra-rehearsals to get them to play Gershwin correctly. It just doesn't come natural to them.
At the soprano's solo in Overflow, my brain tried to tell me she was singing Italian. Almost couldn't stand to listen to more.
You cannot tell an artist what the correct feeling is, each artist has his own interpretation of an author and he plays it according to his personality and his way of seeing life, art is more than a lot of instructions. I have listened to Gerswhin since I was a child and for me he is one of the most versatile and creative artists of all time, I also believe that not only the way you liked him is the ideal way.
@@diegoandresdelgadoc I think you are saying that each performer will bring his or her interpretation to a composition, and that is true. But in classical music (and even though in this work Gershwin was strongly influenced by the Blues that originated in the American south, the music is still essentially "classical" in construction - although not 'classical' in the sense of music period) and the performer should be aiming to interpret the music essentially as the composer intended. This is totally different to a jazz band (any type of jazz) taking a song and turning it into something of their own creation. In the setting of the story, Gershwin was explicitly using the influence of the American Negro's blues, which originated among the repressed coloured peoples of the south, to emphasize the moods of the story; so it's not a case of the "way I liked him", it's a case of Gershwin's intentions. Apart from that I totally agree with your opinion of Gershwin's greatness. It was a sad loss to the world of music that he died just when he was approaching full maturity in his music. We are fortunate to have the legacy of the large number of great songs he composed, along with the Piano Concerto and two Rhapsodies to emphasize his versatility and genius.
@@bryangl1 I totally agree when you talk about what the author intended, perhaps his hearing is better educated, however for me it was a wonderful interpretation with an interesting symphonic air
What a terrible overuse of vibrato the Soprano showed here. Really just put me off an otherwise beautiful performance.
