Technically it's 2003s the singing detective but personally I don't think he truly lessened people's worries and reestablished himself with kiss kiss bang bang. Great film. Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L Jackson probably the next biggest names after him and they were mainly side characters for most of the time. Chris helmsworth and Chris Evans were made because of the mcu and established themselves after the fact of joining the mcu with multi contract deals. Hell don cheadle came in as a bigger name than either Chris when it began. Vin diesel is big but his character is cgi generated and Dave Bautista was a wwe star and not Hollywood blockbuster. Zoe Saldana could have an argument as a top name but being in avatar most didn’t know it was her due to the cgi over her face and Colombiana was her next biggest which kinda flopped but I personally like. However, none of them have the same pure quantity of movies as RDJ. It’s very much a mixture of timing, Star power prior, and lack of multi movie deals. RDJ was gotten for 500k because he was a top actor but was struggling with drugs and alcohol and bad press. So he was underpaid vs his draw. That role was his massive comeback. He didn’t need the same level of job security the others needed as he was in tropic thunder shortly thereafter. Sam Jackson was the only in any similar situation but he was never a main character.

Meaning that he accepted a lesser salary in exchange for a percentage of the movie's grosses. It's a bet on himself. If the movie was a flop, he'd earn nothing more aside from that base salary. Depending on what was negotiated, he could have earned 1% and more on the movie's grosses. Tom Cruise is said to have negotiated 10% for Top Gun Maverick, but he's an exception. I usually hear that other A-listers negotiate for more of less 5% backend deals. And the earnings are incremental. By that, I mean that they negotiate 1-2% under the condition that the grosses reach a certain sum, let's say $200k. If the movie reaches that target, the actor earns 1-2%. Otherwise, he's got nothing outside of the base salary. Then the next increment, if the movie grosses $500k, the actor earns 4-5%. Etc.

Hell yeah, I grew up watching rdj, then would ask my mom why he wasn't in movies anymore, to her looking awkward and wondering what to say, then finally there he was as iron man. I can't name a more spot on casting decision.

Robert was smart and took a deal based on the backend numbers after IronMan. He saw how massive the franchise was going to be and bet on himself as Tony Stark. Genius!
He literally has the redemption arc as an actor starting with IM 1, and he played it extremely smart. That tiny check he got did not phase him because he was playing the long game. I bet he could not stop laughing when the numbers came in with Iron-Man being such a hit.

Technically it's 2003s the singing detective but personally I don't think he truly lessened people's worries and reestablished himself with kiss kiss bang bang. Great film. You can also see alot of iron man in the performance.

Robert Downey Jr is the highest paid actor for marvel because marvel never got him on a big multi movie contract like the others.
And he was probably the most established name coming into the franchise. Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L Jackson probably the next biggest names after him and they were mainly side characters for most of the time. Chris helmsworth and Chris Evans were made because of the mcu and established themselves after the fact of joining the mcu with multi contract deals. Hell don cheadle came in as a bigger name than either Chris when it began. Vin diesel is big but his character is cgi generated and Dave Bautista was a wwe star and not Hollywood blockbuster. Zoe Saldana could have an argument as a top name but being in avatar most didn’t know it was her due to the cgi over her face and Colombiana was her next biggest which kinda flopped but I personally like. However, none of them have the same pure quantity of movies as RDJ. It’s very much a mixture of timing, Star power prior, and lack of multi movie deals. RDJ was gotten for 500k because he was a top actor but was struggling with drugs and alcohol and bad press. So he was underpaid vs his draw. That role was his massive comeback. He didn’t need the same level of job security the others needed as he was in tropic thunder shortly thereafter. Sam Jackson was the only in any similar situation but he was never a main character.

The biggest actor in the MCU at the time was easily Samuel L. Jackson, who had been part of the some of the Blockbusters of previous decades.

Meaning that he accepted a lesser salary in exchange for a percentage of the movie's grosses. It's a bet on himself. If the movie was a flop, he'd earn nothing more aside from that base salary. Depending on what was negotiated, he could have earned 1% and more on the movie's grosses. Tom Cruise is said to have negotiated 10% for Top Gun Maverick, but he's an exception. I usually hear that other A-listers negotiate for more of less 5% backend deals. And the earnings are incremental. By that, I mean that they negotiate 1-2% under the condition that the grosses reach a certain sum, let's say $200k. If the movie reaches that target, the actor earns 1-2%. Otherwise, he's got nothing outside of the base salary. Then the next increment, if the movie grosses $500k, the actor earns 4-5%. Etc.
